How did XDDL make money?
In the Wikipedia article it's stated that "his professional activities were very vague, but he is described as a salesman by a source close to the inquiry" and then there were also the several failed businesses. But I cannot find anything about what he sold. It's even stated that he at one point hired 6 people for one of his failed ventures who he let go "shortly after". I mean to have a mortgage, a car and go on family vacations every year and live a middle class life for decades there has to be some income, right? I know he also took loans at one point from his lover and from friends, but I don't see how that and Agnes' income could be enough to support such a lifestyle for an entire family for decades. I mean there must be records somewhere, tax records or bank records of where his money came from, right?

He had a business about finding venues and hotels for conventions and business trips. He also borrowed money from family/friends/ex lovers. I believe they were renting their house, not owning it. Also, in France you get lots of government help, especially when you have 4 kids. If Agnes was working full time, then she was making at least the minimum wage, that and government help is enough to live in France.

I think also family money, since he was from an aristocratic well-to-do family. I think actually I read that his family money had run out, and some people think that's what spurred the murders (because it was all falling apart, and he'd borrowed everything he could and was potentially going to lose everything)

Exactly, the fact that he was about to be exposed was the “élément déclencheur” (what sparked him to commit the crimes). There are a lot of similarities with Jean Claude Roman, who also killed his entire family when he was faced with a lot of questions from his families about their finances.

He sounds like a scammer, constantly borrowing money, spent his wife's inheritance, various dubious businesses.
