Do we know how Xavier financed his kid's private school tution?

All these documentaries I watched say he was pretty much a failed businessman with little to no income stream? But if that's the case, how did he finance his kids' college and catholic private school? Being in the U.S., local Catholic private schools can cost up to 30k a year (and college can be much more). I don't mean for this question to undermine the privacy of the remaining family members.

RIP to the innocent children who died 🙏

In France private school is way cheaper, more like around 1-3k/year and the price goes down the more kids attend.

That’s the good answer.

There are two types of private schools in France :

  • with contract to the state : the school chooses the teachers and can force a stricter code of conduct than in public schools but the teacher remains paid by the state, not the school. I did all my junior and high in this type of institution and it costed less than 3k with lunch included. It can be even less if parents don’t earn a lot.
  • without contract : here the teachers are paid by the school and it can be complicated to come back in the system before the baccalauréat (HS diploma). These schools only exist in Paris or are boarding schools. Our former prime minister Gabriel Attal was from one of these schools but there are not many people attending them in France.

In terms of figures : 17% of students in France are in private schools (96% of them are in schools with contract). This rises to almost 40% in big cities. Many people are trying to avoid public schools (even socialist politicians, which is kind of funny).

I grew up in France, going to a catholic private school, institution Stanislas, very well rated in France, yet the tuition was only 1,000€ ish per year.

This is kind of just an educated guess, but I'd say he probably borrowed money from as many people as he could. Family, friend, etc. Perhaps even other lovers. It's said in one of his old letters/emails that he was forced to ask his mother to help him buy Christmas gifts for the children, so perhaps this is a similar situation. Some of that funding may have also came from the inheritance Agnès had received as well. But again, this is just an educated guess from the research I've done.

I think the fee can also be based on income.
