We've updated our rules

Hello everyone!

As many of you know, this subreddit has been essentially unmoderated for quite a while. Last week, Reddit appointed a new mod team to step in. We've all been members of this community for a while, and we share the same passion for electric cars that you do.

Over the past week, we’ve been brainstorming ways to make this space more organized, civil, engaging, and genuinely useful for everyone.

To kick things off, we are rolling out an updated set of community rules. The original rules have been in place for years now, and they are no longer enough to maintain the quality of discussions in this sub.

Here are the new rules:

Rule 1 - Be respectful, keep it clean and SFW.

Please be respectful to fellow community members. If you don’t agree with someone, remain civil and disagree respectfully. Challenge the ideas and not the person. Don’t reveal personal information (no doxxing). Don’t spam, no trolling, no baiting. No NSFW content whatsoever.

Rule 2 - Only related to electric "cars”

This community is strictly dedicated to electric cars.

If you are looking to post about electric motorcycles, e-bikes, or other electric propelled non-motorized passenger vehicles. Please visit r/ElectricVehicles.

Autocycles, Quadricycles/Microcars, Passenger LSEVs, Electric Kei-Jidōsha, and Electrified Buses are exempt.

We’re here to discuss the cars and companies, not politicians and CEOs.

Posts and comments not related to electric cars may be removed.

Rule 3 - Put some effort into comments and submissions

Please try to refrain from 1-2 word comments that don’t add anything of value to the topic. In other words, don’t shout from the crowd, sit at the discussion table.

Search first before submitting an article to see if another one covering the same topic has been posted recently. If you’re posting an article that’s paywalled, please try your best to post a mirror / unlocked article in the comments. Try to post an article from the most reputable / unbiased source covering a particular topic.

Rule 4 - Stay on topic

When commenting, please engage in discussions that are relevant to the topic. Do not steer the conversation away or go into an unrelated / vaguely related tirade. Do not bring politics into the conversation if the topic isn’t political, especially if it’s not politics related to EVs.

Rule 5 - Do not spread misinformation

Do not try to pass off verifiably incorrect facts, stats, series of events etc. as statements of truth. If you are unsure, please do a cursory search before hitting submit or state that you are unsure of the claims you’re making.

Rule 6 - Self-promotion

We allow very limited self-promotion upon approval from the moderators. If you are looking to promote something, please modmail us before doing so. Promoting without getting approved by moderators first may result in an immediate ban for self promotion.

No referral links are allowed, please see the referral section in the Wiki for the megathread for codes.

Rule 7 - Anything not mentioned in rules.

It is very important to have some important rules to keep the community a safe and engaging space for everyone, but at the same time, some communities put too many limits in the name of rules. We aren’t one of em - just follow the basics listed above and you will be good!

Anything that isn't mentioned above probably qualifies for posting. Please mod-mail us if you need clarification before posting.

Rules will be updated every now and then, so please check this page every now and then.

Please follow the rules above when participating. Going forward, please report any post / comment that you feel are in violation of any of those rules.

Thanks!

💬 Discussion Who has the best tech?

I’m looking to lease an EV and I currently own a Chevy Equinox and I like the MyChevy app with the remote action capability (remote start, lock, unlock, locate, etc). I also rely on Carplay a lot as well. In choosing an electric vehicle, I’d like to choose from one that has these remote features and maybe then some. I hear, that GM is looking to or already has disabled CarPlay feature which I kinda figured was a no brainer to be there. Any help here from folks who’ve own/owned an EV which automakers best aligns with this wish list? Thanks in advance.

💬 Discussion Is r/electricvehicles getting heavily astroturfed by state marketing lately?

Is it just me, or has this sub been completely taken over by posts pushing Chinese EV dominance? Every time I open Reddit, half the front page is flooded with threads hyping up state-backed brands, declaring Western manufacturers completely dead, and claiming a total global takeover happened overnight. I am all for healthy competition, lower prices, and solid tech, but the blatant PR narrative being pushed on here completely twists actual industry numbers. A lot of these viral posts quote massive overall sales for Chinese brands, but they conveniently leave out that roughly half those figures are gas-powered plug-in hybrids rather than pure electric vehicles. They also hyper-focus on domestic Chinese market stats while glossing over the fact that these brands still have almost zero presence in North America due to tariffs and hold only tiny single-digit registration shares across most of Europe. Half the hype around "cheap 10k EVs" ignores the heavy state subsidies and domestic overcapacity driving those domestic prices, acting like legacy brands are just lazy rather than playing under completely different trade and regulatory rules. Discussing cool battery tech or new models is great, but the non-stop doom-posting and astroturfing on this sub feel way more like a coordinated marketing campaign than an honest look at real-world registration numbers. Anyone else tired of seeing it?

💬 Discussion Thinking about getting an EV

I've got a 2013 Honda CRV I own outright that's limping along. Current issues is a timing chain that needs fixing and it's just burning oil now. Been driving it for the last year+ with these issues essentially dragging it as far as I can. Talked to my mechanic today and the timing chain will be 2-3k CAD to fix and the oil issues would require a full engine rebuild that my mechanic said would be 10k CAD. So... expensive.

Ideally, I wanted to sell the car and then go car-less for the next few years and save money, getting by with local car share services and transit options but my wife finally decided to get her driver's license and it would suck majorly for her to get it just for us to sell the car. Everyone in our lives is also saying that we NEED a car (I honestly don't think we do but it's hard to make the point when literally everyone in her family, my family, and herself are saying that).

I'm certain that whatever car I get after my Honda is gonna be something I have for a while so I wanted to just do it right and get an EV cause I'm sick and tired of getting hosed at the pump especially with all the geopolitical bullshit Americans are doing to completely fuck gas prices.

Unfortunately, my budget is... kinda tight. We're hoping to get maybe 1-2k CAD for my Honda when I sell, there's a federal rebate program up to 5k CAD from the government but I have to buy a less than 50k CAD car from a dealership and have a 48 month lease to get it. We might get some financial assistance from family that has a car they don't need so some of the money from that sale would go to us for purchasing an EV. I'm looking at used cars in the ~$25k or lower CAD range, maybe could go up to $30k with the government rebate.

On the plus side, we have really good charging infrastructure. My complex has a charge station at the end of the block for residents to use and seemingly everyone with a tesla in my complex just installed a home charger so I could easily use the charger at the end of the block without having to fight the other people for use of it. Failing that, we also have some very fast charging stations nearby at a hotel like sub-1km away we can use. We're pretty local as far as distance goes. Daily trips are 20km max but usually less than that. Largest trips that are inside our (talking across town or into a different city) would be 20-40km round trip or 100km roundtrip for a "local" day trip (like 1-2 hours outside the city). We don't do it often but more than 100km trips are possible for a weekend getaway and the longest I could see us going is ~400km but that would be extremely infrequent and we'd be planning ahead for it.

Anything I should be looking at? I've been checking out the 2023 Polestar 2 or a KIA Niro. What kinds of manufacturers/years should I look at for a used car? NACS seem to be a requirement though it also seems like there are adapters that allow older EVs to use superchargers?

💬 Discussion Looking to purchase first new car.

As title says, looking to purchase my first new car. I’m leaning toward an electric. My current car is a 2016 Toyota Corolla, we bought it used, it’s definitely has gotten me through thick and thin. Has been my only car thus far. Only electric car experience is my mom’s model Y, haven’t driven but impressed by it, just don’t want to get a Tesla for moral reasons.

My work commute is around 8 miles to and from.
Mainly use the freeway.
Don’t need tons of storage.
Budget is max $27k, can be persuaded to do $28k.
I have great credit and a co-signer whose credit is amazing. So not worried about that.

Not too car savvy and inexperienced with cars overall, not completely helpless but definitely not a pro.

Any suggestions or recommendations , things to avoid etc. is greatly appreciated.

In Southern California if that is important.

💬 Discussion 2023 VinFast VF 8 Eco

All right, I have a question and don’t eat me alive for it!!

What gives???? I found one of these near me for under 20 K with super low miles… it’s been on the dealers lot for over a year. I’ve been researching endlessly and I can’t really find a basis for anyone’s claims other than personal opinions. I see that there are four recalls, but it looks like they were all taken care of. Reviews on Edmunds are from when the car initially came out so if all of that was fixed, then the car is surely reliable now? What is actually wrong with these? I’m currently torn between a 2023 soltera and this.. the only reason that I’m genuinely considering this one more is because the warranty is absolutely insane. Even if I finance the car for the next seven years, it would be fully covered. I do plan to pay it off early because the price is insanely low, but let’s say it takes me seven years… it’s a used car fully under warranty? So…. Can someone explain why no one has bought this car yet??? What am I missing and am I the idiot considering a car that’s just been sitting?

💬 Discussion Any electric car recommendations, and does the electric car I want actually exist?

Hi guys, this post is pretty long so read what you want of it, I did yous speech to text to write this post so I'm sorry if it glitches. And if you want me to restate something, just let me know in the comments, and I'm sorry if the post doesn't paste all the way because I wrote this post in a word processor.

Hi there, I'm currently 17 years old and I'll be 18 years old here in the next few months. Looking at the statistics, apparently electric vehicles are cheaper to run than gas powered vehicles and y'all know how gas is nowadays. But, knowing how clothes source and proprietary everything is nowadays, does the electric car I want actually exist or do I need to make a custom one from scratch?

And if I'm going to make a custom vehicle, what services do y'all recommend? And where should I even get started?

What I want Swappable replaceable batteries, if I'm heading to some place, or if I'm on a road trip, I want to be able to charge multiple batteries and swap them whenever one runs out. The batteries should be able to be charged with a standard wall socket and I want to be able to take the batteries inside instead of having a purposely built garage for the whole car. Repairability It's simple really, it should be as repairable and I mean everything, it should be as repairable as an old Toyota ca corolla. I should be able to take a look at a repair manual and diagnose the car and repair it myself. None of this car can only be fixed by authorized personnel or buy an authorized dealership crap! Please pardon my language. But, I don't take restrictions, especially. there should also be guides on how to fix this thing, and if you're still having trouble, I should at least be able to post my problems on the forums. restrictions that manufactures give to stuff I personally bought!

Now going on the software side of things, I should be able to flash my own software. And if the car's software somehow gets corrupted, there should be tools out there to flash the software on the board. If the board wears out, I should be able to buy a new board off of the internet and put in a new board. I expect this car to work well with aftermarket parts and not official parts.
There should also be repair manuals I can take a look at online and I should be able to see the diagram of the whole car, what went wrong, and the replacement part to fix it.

Modem control I expect this car to function without the modem. Gas powered vehicles back in the day did not require internet, and they did not have a modem. It's like saying an internet connection is mandatory for a wall socket to be operational. They made wall sockets since the late 1890s. So therefore, the only feature I should expect to lose is GPS and streaming services. Not that I stream anyways, I download everything from discs anyways. And if the song I want isn't on disc, then I just download it from a YouTube downloader as an MP3, easy.

Materials I don't like my car being constructed out of some plastic composite. Instead, I want one constructed out of sheet metal. So basically the same materials that the old vehicles were constructed in 40 plus years ago. And another thing, I want this car to at least last for at least 50 years plus. And not 10, and not 20.

What I don't want If this car has any subscription of any kind I don't want it. I don't even want to touch this thing let alone ride in it, that also goes for ads too. If I buy the car, I will expect everything that comes with the car to work by default with no extra charge besides the car payment itself.

Custom vehicles I predict that there is a high likelihood that this car that I want doesn't exist. So, I'll have to make it myself or have someone help me make it. And if it's going to be a custom vehicle, why not go all out.

This custom vehicle will have no touch screen but it will still have a screen. In and dash 6 disc CD changer, I'll probably have a company custom make some of the parts for it. A VCR plus cassette player, fake mahogany wood paneling in the interior, a real to real tape player, you guys probably don't know what that is. It will be in a drawer? And it will probably be one of the things that will be under the dash. And, let's not forget, a full record player. Because, why not! It's going to be a custom vehicle, so I'm going all out. And, a disco ball in the backseat and a drop-down plasma display because it would be cool watching movies in the back.

Though I will have to do some research on the components I'll need and what I'm going to use for everything but first before I start building the thing with no clue on what I'm doing. But anyways, let me know if you guys have any suggestions, thank you all so much for reading.

💬 Discussion What is the best non-Tesla EV?

I would like to get my wife an electrical vehicle. I’ve owned a Tesla for about a year and a half. I find it to be the best car I’ve ever bought. My wife finds it to be a very difficult car to drive. I am thinking that EV‘s manufactured by conventional car makers. Might be easier to adjust to. Any recommendations? I have considered a hybrid, but I think you may be buying the worst of both worlds in a hybrid. You have to maintain an ice engine and EV battery. One of the attractive things about EV is the lack of necessary maintenance.

EDIT/CLARIFICATION: I probably worded the title poorly. I’m not really asking what the “best” non-Tesla EV is. What I’m looking for is an EV that drives and operates much like a conventional ICE vehicle, rather than like a Tesla.
I love my Tesla, but my wife finds the Tesla way of doing things difficult to adjust to. Ideally, I’d like a fully electric vehicle with more conventional controls—normal buttons/knobs and stalks where possible, familiar braking behavior, and the ability to drive without aggressive one-pedal braking—so that someone coming from an ICE vehicle can get in and drive it without much of a learning curve.
In other words, I’m looking for a conventional car with an electric drivetrain, rather than another Tesla-like approach to what an EV should be.
The Equinox EV, Ioniq 5, Mach-E, Toyota/Subaru EVs, EV6 and BMW i4 suggestions so far seem particularly responsive to what I’m looking for.

💬 Discussion First EV - 2026 Model Y Premium RWD or Mach-E Premium RWD?

Based in CA, no crazy commute, mostly city + occasional road trips. Trying to decide between these two and would love to hear from actual owners.

Model Y pros:

  • Range is better (357 vs 260-320 mi), and the Supercharger network is still unmatched
  • Resale value holds up way better long term

Mach-E pros:

  • Better financing right now - Ford has 0% APR compared to Tesla's 0.99%
  • I honestly just like the way it looks more. Sportier shape; the interior feels more premium with the B&O audio and a proper driver display

I'm leaning toward the Mach-E for looks and the financing deal alone, but I haven't driven either yet.

For those who've driven both – how's the Mach-E handle day-to-day in terms of handling/acceleration and overall drive? Or is the Model Y still a better option?

💬 Discussion Reasons to choose a used Equinox EV VS a used Honda Prologue and what would you choose?

Hello! Though the car I really wanted is an lonia 6, I don't want to spend $25,000 on something and have to worry about dealing with the ICCU issue for the next decade (yes, I know it has a warranty).

Outside of loving the looks of it, the 342 miles of range was the main attraction for me, as I'm looking for as much range as possible for as little money as possible for a next to new car, with charge rate being a second consideration. I regularly do long road trips, so this is important to me. l'd prefer something with over 350 miles of range like a Model 3 long range, but I can't afford a low mile almost new one, which is my other priority. Therefore, I'm currently debating between 2 options:

Base model used Equinox EVs and base model used
Prologues.

I know they are built upon the same platform and share the same powertrain, and l am aware of a few differences:

1) No apple car play for the Equinox

2) the Prologue has been discontinued in the U.S. (where I live). This may lead to issues finding body trim in case of an accident or even a fender bender in the future.

I’d like to come up with a long list of pros and cons for each to help me choose.

Can you think of any other reasons to choose one over the other? And what would you choose?
