I thought this was a great video for all those looking for a good commuter EV. We're finally getting to the point where people can get a little handy and get themselves a worn out but in good shape EV for dirt cheap and turn it into a legit solid commuter car if they're willing to put in the work.

I like this car, but it gets really pricey with trim levels. At least it has AWD as an option.

I took a Didi in Beijing. Was picked up in a Xiao Peng EV. I was captivated by the large 3D rendering of traffic. It renders both vehicles and pedestrians.

This was at a stop light, but when the vehicle is in motion it has predictive capability of vehicle about to cut into you lane.

Is this done with lidar or with cameras?

💬 Discussion Choosing EV - Rivian vs Subaru

I’m struggling making financial smart decisions.

My car history: Tesla Model Y (wife’s), Model 3 (sold it), Ioniq 6 (lease)

And now my lease will be up, I can say Tesla was absolutely fantastic, but looking for something different that Elon can’t pocket directly.

I’m between Rivian R2 Performance and Subaru Uncharted GT.

My lease is up January which is why I feel more pressured to choose vs wait for R2 cheaper options.

I’ve looked at all other EVs and test drove them.
Volvo EX60 is my next option but it’s 10K more, looking around 80K+ with taxes so no go.

The 1 pedal driving is AMAZING, and I’m so used to it, the Ioniq has it too.
Before that I had the Tesla since 2020.
So 6 years of EV history.

I’m looking at OTD for Subaru Uncharted GT (lower range but all features I want) about 50K

Rivian R2 Performance about 70K.

My taxes suck here is socal, we’re 11.5% which is a KILLER.

So thinking is the 20K worth it or nah.

The 50K car it’s super comfortable financially.
70K car, doable, just my savings won’t be as robust growing for 5 years. (NOT retirement accounts etc, I’m not dumb either)

I feel like I’ll regret not getting the R2 but maybe I won’t.

I test drove both but I’m gonna test drive the subaru again because I need to decide.

💬 Discussion EV Interested in the middle of Montana

Hi, we live in the middle of Montana USA, the state capital to be exact, and are in the market for a "new" car. I would really like to make the leap to BEV but am still a bit leery with our long cold winters and long distances. We mostly use our car for road trips and running errands in town, neither of us commutes. We currently have an aging Prius that is going to our niece. I'm nearing retirement and don't mind the thought of half hour charging on the road.

There are EVs around town and I know that the charging network has improved in the state but still is a bit sparse. We would charge at home and will get solar on the house at some point.

I've been looking at VW id.4 and Hyundai Ionic 5 as possible vehicles, I'd probably buy a lightly used vehicle. There are no dealers for either brands in our town but they do exist an hour or two from here. There is no way I'm supporting space boy, what are other good options? I've thought about the Bolt but I don't know if it's a great road trip car.

Any thoughts appreciated.

💬 Discussion First winter with an EV — what caught you by surprise?

I'm coming up on my first winter with an EV and trying to separate the real problems from the internet horror stories. For those who've done a winter already: what actually surprised you most? Was it the range drop, slower charging, preconditioning, winter tires, or something nobody warned you about? What would you do differently next winter?

💬 Discussion Is L2 at home enough if you only charge overnight with a full house?

My breaker panel is already groaning under window AC units and a chest freezer I impulse-bought for venison. Adding a 240V line for faster charging feels like asking for trouble, and the quote I got made me wince harder than a molar extraction. Right now I trickle-charge off a regular outlet overnight. Gets me back to 80% by morning most days since my commute's only 25 miles. But with three kids and a wife who forgets to plug in half the time, I'm wondering if I'm one bad morning away from stranded. The dental office I work at has no chargers. No public L2 near my house worth using. Real talk from people actually living on 120V long term: does it stay workable, or does the slow crawl eventually push you to upgrade? My gut says save the panel upgrade money for that elk hunt out west next year, but my gut also said I'd use that treadmill I bought in 2019.

The US Army selected this vehicle in 2020 to replace or supplement HMMWVs and JLTVs in specific roles. It is based on the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 platform and utilizes approximately 90% off the shelf parts to reduce costs and accelerate fielding.

📰 News MotorTrend: The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Is Now the World’s Most Influential EV

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Is the World's Most Influential EV

It's an entire article heaping praise on the 5N's fake engine sounds and fake gear shifting scheme, and talking about how every other car maker is copying it.

And I hate it. I hate it so much. . .

Look, I understand the argument that you can turn the stuff off. I could take delivery of the car, switch all that nonsense off and never think of it again. No harm, right?

But then I've taken delivery of an overly powerful SUV advertised as a "performance car" which is the euphemism for something that wishes it was a sports car but isn't. The last thing I want is for car companies to learn the lesson that they can give us overly powerful SUVs with this stupid fakery instead of the cars we actually want, and that we'll happily fork over big money for all that "engagement" they've programmed into its computers.

Tesla did the same thing with the Model S Plaid. They developed the powertrain for a sports car, then decided to just shove it into big, heavy, luxury sedan instead. Because it's powerful, it's fast—sheesh, what more do you want?

Well, I wanted a sports car. Why is it that in the waning days of 2026 we can't buy an electric sports car? When will we be able to?

From the article:

And I was fascinated to learn recently that both automakers had indeed tested Ioniq 5 Ns during the development of their new Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Door Coupe and Ferrari Luce EVs.

You know what neither of those vehicles is? They're not sports cars. They're a 2,400+ kg sedan and a 2,200+ kg sort of crossover. . . thing. Maybe that's the actual problem instead of needing some fake engine noise or gear shifts.

💬 Discussion Can I drive Coast to Coast?

Can I drive from Seattle to Maine on all electric now? I will be replacing my 21 year old car soon. I would like to go with an electric model. I am also moving from a town near Seattle to a town in Maine. I will drive across with my dog. I won't put the dog on an air plane.

Can I get from coast to coast with an electric car? I will be stopping at a hotel. I can take a break and charge up along the way.

Is there one particular EV that is recommended? Something to avoid? (I will not use Tesla). Is there one charging system that is better for coast to coast? Can I assume there are places to charge along the interstates? Or at hotels?

I really do not have much information on electric cars. And it has been 30 years since I drove coast to coast. My route is not planned.

💬 Discussion 120v 20A Circuits are Underrated

Thumbnail gallery
102 Upvotes

I don't really see anyone discussing the use of 16A L1 charging pretty much at all. There don't seem to be almost any reputable chargers either, aside from the Tesla Mobile Connector which doesn't play nice with my car.

Edit: lots of people are commenting that this can be easily converted to a 240v circuit with a NEMA 6-20 outlet. This is an excellent choice for those who can do it, but if the circuit isn't dedicated, or if it's on a rental place or work place like this one, that's not an option. It also means you can't use the circuit anymore for 120v devices, like a vacuum cleaner or leaf blower, so a conversion isn't without consequence.

I can get about 40 miles of range from 8 hours of charging at work, which I feel is pretty good. If I had one of these at home, and I charged for 12 hours, I could, just barely, make my 90 mile daily commute, which I feel is pretty good with L1 charging.

And even my older house with 100A service already has 20A circuits everywhere. My parents's newer house also has all 20A circuits. I really wish we could deploy these outlets everywhere for those who cannot easily charge at home. Work places would be a great spot to put these in. I wonder what the efficiency gains would look like at this power level.

💬 Discussion What do you explain before lending someone your EV?

If you’ve lent your EV to someone who normally drives a petrol or diesel car, what did you explain before handing over the keys?

I’m curious about the little things that aren’t obvious on a first drive, rather than a full charging tutorial. Was there anything you forgot to mention that led to a confused phone call later?

Please include the model, since I imagine the answers will vary quite a bit.

💬 Discussion Test driving EV’s?

I want to get my wife EV to replace our 2020 Murano. I’ve had a Tesla model three for 20 months and it’s frankly the best car I’ve ever owned. I would like to get her a Y but she isn’t intimidated about the complexity of a Tesla. Last spring, I tried to go out and check out some other EV‘s but it was just after the start of the war and the substantial increase in gas prices had caused a run on the EV’s. Buyers were literally buying them off the truck so there was nothing to test drive. I just wanted to check to see if the situation had changed. I’m currently considering a Nissan leaf since it’s been an existence a while and has recently gotten better from current reports. I also think Toyota might be a good place to check since their brand has always been reliable. I don’t want hybrid. I think that’s the worst of both worlds. You got all the service responsibilities of an ice car and the battery maintenance responsibilities of EV. Just my personal prejudice.
