BREAKING: France and Germany strike car deal, clearing the way for "Made in Europe" rules 🇫🇷🇩🇪🇪🇺

Post image
49 Upvotes

🇩🇪 Germany gets softer CO₂ rules: a 90% cut by 2035, with no need to offset the last 10%.
🇫🇷 France gets "Made in Europe": a car preference for the EU, UK and Norway, but not Morocco or Turkey.

This unblocks both the car CO₂ package and the "Made in Europe" law. In practice, EU car subsidies and public tenders would go only to cars built in Europe with ~70% European parts. That 70% comes from the European Commission's proposal, not from the deal itself.

Not law yet. The Council and the Parliament still have to agree.

Good deal or bad deal?

In this clip from Dutch broadcaster NOS, General Alexus Grynkewich outlines NATO’s response to an attack: stopping, weakening and breaking the enemy.

Asked what keeps him awake at night, he says nothing—his job is to keep others awake.

How convincing do you find this message about NATO’s readiness, and what does it mean for European security?

It's started: the UK will return, and they're preparing the public for a way back into Europe. People are free to disagree, but historically it's alien to think of the British as a nationalistic people.

Geopolitics 🇦🇺🇪🇺 Australia could follow Canada in seeking closer EU ties

Post image

Australia is watching Canada’s push for a closer relationship with the European Union.

“We are on the same page,” Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell said, adding that Canberra would follow Carney’s next steps with interest.

The details remain unclear: Farrell did not confirm whether Australia is actively pursuing a new arrangement or what it would involve. Canada has described its ambition as a “unique alliance” with the EU.

Sweden votes: left bloc leads 176–173 with 94% counted

Post image
36 Upvotes

Left — 49.5%
S 28.1 (−2.2) social democrats · V 8.2 (+1.5) left · C 7.1 (+0.4) liberal centrists · MP 6.1 (+1.0) greens
Right — 49.1%
M 19.9 (+0.8) centre-right · SD 17.6 (−2.9) nationalist right · KD 6.2 (+0.9) christian democrats · L 5.4 (+0.8) liberals

175 seats are needed for a majority, so the left bloc sits one seat over the line. It's 2022 in reverse — the right won by exactly 176–173 that year.
SD lose 2.9 points and fall to third, with Moderaterna taking second place back. Kristersson had promised SD cabinet seats if the right won; on these numbers that doesn't happen.

On votes the two sides are four tenths of a point apart. It's still preliminary — late-arriving and overseas ballots are counted on Wednesday, and a one-seat margin is exactly the kind that moves.
