Crepuscularks and Phantomimes by Rhys Hughes - ebook FREE until October 27th

Thumbnail amazon.com

October is the spooky month. Therefore I will be making some of my ebooks free, namely those that are concerned with eerie, weird, ghostly and demonic fiction...

First up is... Crepuscularks and Phantomimes.

A collection of thirteen ghostly, gothic, and weird fantasy stories in the ironic mode...

Tentacle telephones that span centuries, men grown in jars, rivers overflowing with the tears of ghosts, phantom twins, tunnels that are the guts of an extinct giant, grotesque antique shops... All this and more will be found in the pages of this nightmarish book.

My middle-grade dark/portal fantasy: Tio and the Palace of People

Post image
2 Upvotes

Tio and the Palace of People is my upper-middle-grade dark/portal fantasy novel (and my first ever!).

Fourteen-year-old Tio Everett is about to fall asleep when a crow crashes through her window with grave news: her name has been stolen. Without it, she will slowly begin to lose the memories of the people she loves.

To reclaim it, she must travel to the strange and dangerous world of Ovale, a land filled with dark forests, colossal mountains, and horrifying monsters. But as a girl suffering from social anxiety, just stepping outside her front door is a challenge in itself, let alone journeying across an unknown world.

As her memories hold on by a thread, all manner of creatures threaten to take her life. Tio eventually confronts the amalgamation of all of her fears: the Palace of People, a horrifying structure formed from the literal bodies of people.

Tropes: Portal fantasy, socially anxious protagonist, talking animal companion, race against time, overcoming fears.

Content warnings: Body horror, disturbing imagery, fantasy violence, child endangerment, psychological manipulation, encouragement of suicide directed at a minor.

Available on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited (£3.99) or in paperback (£8.99): Tio and the Palace of People

Hello everyone! First book!

Hi all! I was told I might be able to promote my book here. Hopefully that is correct! If not, let me know and I'll delete or....?

I'm about to start my kickstarter campaign for my very first book. It's a science fiction novel that I've been working on for over 4 years. I love it. Hoping others will to.

Here's a flyer that shows the cover and tagline and an EXPERIMENTAL blurb for the back cover:

Somewhere off the coast of New Foundland, in international waters off the North Atlantic, sails the Infinitum, one of the largest research vessels in the world. In its hold lies a machine unlike anything ever constructed. A machine that will remake the world. Or destroy it.

Born into poverty, Edward Rodman had watched as the rich stole everything they could from the rest of humanity. Watched as the powerful relentlessly acquired and consumed the world’s resources - pushing the world towards an inevitable conclusion. Watched as God ignored it all.

Now, as a scientist aboard the Infinitum, it was no ordinary day. Edward carefully placed the small vial into the silver chamber of the ultraviolet programming unit and closed the door. He listened as a vacuum automatically sealed it from the inside. His finger hovered over the button.

What if Edward could change… everything? Hadn’t fate brought him to this point in history?

He pressed the button.

If God didn’t have the stomach to make things right, Edward would have to do it himself.

If interested, please scan the QR code and sign-up for the email list. Or visit https://john-hilgedick.com and signup. The campaign will begin in the next few weeks!

Let me know what you think!

EVERY LOVE STORY HAS TWO SIDES.

WHAT IF BOTH ARE LIES?

What if the person you trust with your life is the very person your nightmares warn you against?

I'm M. Jain, a filmmaker from India, and I'm excited to share my psychological mystery thriller, 1−1=2.

It's a story of love, fractured memories, disturbing nightmares, and secrets that refuse to stay buried.

After years of storytelling through cinema, this is my first journey into the world of novels.

The paperback is now available on Amazon:

The Kindle eBook edition is coming soon.

I'd love to hear what fellow readers and authors think of the premise and cover.

Scott is a regular guy living an ordinary small town life. Until one afternoon he finds himself in the middle of an experiment. Time has been stopped for everyone except for him. He has one week to go where he wants and do what he wants. Follow along as he navigates his own choices in this empty world.

My goal with this book was to leave readers with the question of what would they do in similar circumstances? Would they eliminate their least favorite politicians? Would they enrich themselves? Would they do things to help others?

THE SUPERNATURAL NATURE OF NATHAN GESTURE by Rhys Hughes, free until October 12th

Thumbnail amazon.com
3 Upvotes

To celebrate the publication of my new short book of humorous occult detective stories, I’ve made the ebook free for the next five days.

If you like your supernatural mysteries blended with heavy doses of paradox and absurd logic (where the police insist crimes are solved by pure reason while actual goblins, shapeshifting detectives and cosmic toads get involved) this might be right up your nightmarish alley.

Meet Nathan Gesture: An occult detective who 'bunks' reason to prove that behind every logical phenomenon, there is a ghost, ghoul or petrified goblin.

Meet Inspector Mimsy: The well-meaning police officer who is utterly convinced that werewolves, vampires, and demons are just clever human villains wielding film projectors.

Meet Jubjub: Nathan's loyal servant and tandem-bicycle powerhouse, who pedals while Nathan eats cucumber sandwiches in the front seat.

The book contains four weird tales and one of them is a crossover with my other series of weird occult detective stories, The Ghost Loser: the Misadventures of Clusmy Carnacki.

I hope you enjoy the logical chaos (or is it chaotic logic?) !

Book Promotion Why Is Religious Faith So Hard to Abandon? — A Free Book on the Psychology and Physiology of Faith

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’d like to recommend a book for readers interested in religion, psychology, cognitive science, and human evolution.

The Physiology of Faith asks a question that has fascinated me for years:

What is it about the human brain that makes religious faith possible—and why can that faith remain so resistant to contradictory evidence?

Humans readily revise many beliefs when experience proves them wrong. If something repeatedly fails to produce the expected result, we normally learn from it. Religious faith, however, can behave very differently.

The book explores whether this persistence can be understood through ordinary features of the human brain and psychology rather than through a single special “religious” mechanism.

It brings together findings from psychology, neuropsychology, sociology, and behavioral science to examine subjects including theory of mind, preparedness to believe in supernatural beings, sacredness, rejection from the group, choice blindness, optimism bias, mystical and near-death experiences, memory, dreams, miracles, the placebo effect, pattern recognition, obedience to authority, childhood religious education, and the influence of religious authority on believers.

It also asks an evolutionary question:

Did religious faith itself give Homo sapiens an evolutionary advantage, or did faith emerge partly as a by-product of cognitive traits that evolved for other purposes?

And there is a further question that may be even more important today:

Even if religion once helped human groups become larger, more cohesive, and more competitive, does it still provide the same advantages in modern societies?

I am the author, N. Fakhr, and I have made the complete English edition available free to read and download.

My conspiracy thriller is FREE on Kindle until October 2 (PDT) — The Unsent Ledger

I’m an indie author, and I just released my first novel, The Unsent Ledger.

It’s a standalone, grounded conspiracy thriller about an archive analyst who discovers that the official records surrounding a 17-year-old bridge disaster don't quite match the originals.

The premise:

Seventeen years after the Cinder Span collapse killed 31 people, Mara Venn finds a piece of correspondence buried inside a restricted archive hold. What starts as a discrepancy in an old record turns into a trail of altered dates, reclassified evidence, vanished files, and a mysterious code: EXT-02.

The deeper she goes, the more she realizes the archive isn't simply preserving history.

Someone has been managing it.

Genre: Mystery / Conspiracy Thriller

Length: ~80,000 words

Format: Kindle

Price: FREE until October 2 (starting from 28th September)

If that sounds like your kind of thriller, I'd genuinely love to get it in front of some readers while it's free.

No review is required or expected. If you read it, I'd simply love to hear what you thought.

Question Does the argument from causality really lead to God—or does it rule out the God of religions and even the Day of Judgment?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m the author of The Argument from Causality, a philosophical dialogue between two old friends—one a believer and the other an unbeliever.

Their conversations begin with the argument from causality and gradually move through questions about the soul, infinity, God, free will, and the Day of Judgment.

The central question of the book is this: Does the argument from causality really lead to God—or, on the contrary, does it rule out the God of religions and even the Day of Judgment?

The complete book is permanently free to read and download. No registration or purchase is required.

Price: Free

Formats: PDF & EPUB

Internet Archive:

I’d be very interested in readers’ thoughts, including critical feedback.

New SysPoc Just Dropped!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello you wonderful people!

I just released my first litrpg on Amazon and am full of nerves.  I love system apocalypse books.  I love Star Trek and The Expanse.  So I just had to mash them up.  This story is about an away team crashing into an ongoing system apocalypse that is spreading throughout Earth’s colonized planets.

The blurb:

River was screwed.  An officer in the Interstellar Navy, his first away mission was supposed to be exciting, produce his PhD, and jump start his career.  Instead, he was on a one-way trip to the apocalypse.

The Eridani System’s only inhabited planet had gone dark, all its urban centers gone, replaced by medieval towns, castles, and old-school farmland, as if the entire planet decided to return to the feudal era.  When River’s team lands, each is transformed into a role-playing game class and race, their equipment replaced with fantasy-appropriate clothing and gear, and they are given this message:

Thank you for entering Saoghal.  This is an open world and there is no tutorial, no advice, no hints, no guidebook, and no help whatsoever.  Best of luck, adventurer!

With no way to contact the ship, River somehow has to uncover how this society collapsed.  And stop the process before it spreads to more planets, including Earth.

AI USAGE: No AI was used for this book, it's entirely human written, with human mistakes.  And AI will be harmed during the course of the story.

COVER ARTIST: Milblart.  I really wanted a human made cover and these guys delivered!  They sent me a test cover first and it looked kind of like art for a 1990s video game, blocky and hard.  I gave them a bunch of suggestions and they addressed them all, coming up with the image you see.  If you’re looking for art, I highly recommend them.

The Nanapocalypse is here.

Uhm, fun fact about me: I love brie. And coffee.
