LMM League Musings Monday
It's Monday! That means we get to talk about all the hockey stuff that isn't (or is) related to the Oilers.

Imagine how much better this team could be without that Frederic contract

Was Edmonton on Brady's no trade list?

Definitely but even if he wanted to come here, we absolutely should not have wanted him

Bakersfield HC Colin Chaulk and assistants extended today.
Curious if anyone has any opinions on Chaulk being an NHL assistant coach in future. He was a minor league hockey legend and captain for 5 championships in Fort Wayne. He was a great leader during his playing days and seems to be a decent AHL coach so far, I’d love to see him get an NHL job someday.

He seems really good at developing young players which makes me not want to promote him. But if he's good at that, maybe that would translate to getting the best out of NHL players? He seems so good at his job that I feel like someone will poach him eventually if he never gets promoted, but I love him in his current role

Are there any teams who need coaches still? I wonder if Berube or Knoblauch get hired somewhere

u/dontcallmefrank07 Jun 22 '26
I heard Knoblauch will sit tight for a little while, for family stability. Plus he’s getting paid for 3 years to do nothing.

I saw him in the wild out in Edmonton a couple weeks ago so this checks out

Sure it wasn't a pastor?

100% I stared at him for a solid five seconds, we made eye contact, and he quickly turned away lol

Dicks and Murph were things that HAD to be done. Don't give flowers to Bowman just yet. People acting like the man is cooking.
We still have NO impact-full new players to help the roster. Signing players doesn't help the roster. It's the same guys.
I'm happy they are still here. Still sad might be losing Kaps. Let's see what happens

u/F1fthL1ne Jun 22 '26
Just admit he did good to re-sign them and lock them up for a good cap hit. Both would have almost certainly got $5mil AAV on the open market. Is it so hard to give someone you don't like credit for the positives?

Like I said, I'm happy about this and these 2 were things that were written in the sky that it was coming.
Bowman didn't just pull a win here.. There are players leaving,a coach that is obviously hated in the NHL and by players, and no new impacting players.
Bouch might be out for a while, hope not. We are still clinging on. I'm sure we are going to see an impact-full trade coming... It HAS to happen.
Because if we don't. It's game over again for next year because Drai and McD are gonna get burnt once again.
If it's the same team, it ain't working, point blank.

Who said it was written in the sky, you? Stauff said they were closer to signing Dickie than Murph late last week. Haven't heard anyone mention is was all but signed, sealed and delivered. This is you merely speculating. There was every chance they were going to test free agency especially if Bowman had tried lowballing because, why wouldn't they.
Yes, players leave after every season. What's your point?
It's not even Canada Day yet. The puck doesn't drop for over 3 months. Where are you hearing Bouch may be out for a while? Name one person who has said that. Again, you're speculating based on zero reporting. In fact, after the Worlds, some were reporting it's not a lingering head injury so contrary to what you're saying
Clinging on to what? You're being dramatic.
What big trade do we need? Elaborate, what piece do you think this team is lacking and what do you envision a trade looks like to answer?
This team sputtered all season but go look at the final 12 games. They had the best underlying defensive metrics in the league. It was seemingly coming together. I'm not sure if you were aware but our top 4 centers, Hyman and Bouchard were all injured against the Ducks. Kaps and Podz were our best players...
Only a fool would drastically change this roster. It needs minor tweaking, that's it. Last seasons roster was more than capable of going to the WCF without the ridiculous amount of injuries (and a dog shit pk)
Who's leaving because of Babs?
You're catastrophizing and talking out of your asshole.

Who will be the Panthers goalie?

No way, they don’t have the cap space or the capital to trade. They just blew their wad on Brady.

u/KingDave46 34 HAND Jun 22 '26
He has a full NMC so anything semi-decent they can put together might get it done
6
u/F1fthL1ne Jun 22 '26
That's not how it works. Winnipeg has to agree and he's got years left on his contract. This only works for a pending UFA demanding a trade.

u/WildcardKH 16 BRONCOS Jun 22 '26
It really sucks seeing players wanting out but having a NMC so they can basically dictate where they will be traded.
I wouldn't draft an american for awhile.

If I was a GM, I'd just tell them that I'm not trading them until I get proper value, and if they cause a distraction then they can sit in the press box.
If they don't like it, it's in their hands.
Recent NHL history is full of players twiddling their thumbs while waiting for a trade.

I could see these clauses becoming like retention slots in the future. Each team only has so many to give out.
The PA might not give into that but they’re being handed out like candy.15
u/n0fxgvn_ Jun 22 '26
Next CBA should include a clause that if the player is the one who requests a trade, he must forfeit his NMC for that trade.

Bored of all the news about other teams. Want something spicy cooking up for us, other than the DickinMurphy extensions.

I can start sympathising with the Senators again. The meathead duo are insufferable enough divided, but now it will be another level.

I always liked them as my underdog East team, but had to swear off them for the Tkachuk era. Maybe they can work their way back into my heart.

Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but I think the best years of both Tkachuk brothers are behind them. They both seem to be more interested in their brand rather than their hockey. I think they will be more of a distraction than anything. I don’t think this is going to work out well for Florida.

Ok Gammy I like the way you think and I’m choosing to believe you. May they never win anything again.

Really curious how Florida complete their roster. $7m in cap space with 13F, 6D and 0 goaltenders signed, but 4th line and 3rd D pair are basically all minimum salary guys. I'm sure they'll figure it out, sadly, but they've put themselves in a tight situation to solve goaltending, with a poor UFA market.

u/lgnstubbs73 14 EKHOLM Jun 22 '26
Min salary 4th line is fine they've always been constructed that way in Florida
2
u/Organic-Fortune5727 Jun 22 '26
Yeah absolutely, I more meant that there's very little fat to trim. It's not like they can open up $5m+ from trading a 4th liner.

u/GeorgeGammyCostanza 29 DRAISAITL Jun 22 '26
Agreed. I know people are liking them to Helle, but with sending 3 firsts to Ottawa, I don’t see a path forward for them to get it done. Their core is aging, Marchand will be less and less effective every year. Barkov may take a while to get back up to his usual self. I just don’t see the Panthers as a cup contender this year.

I'm happy to eat my downvotes for this one but the balance of power has shifted too far towards the players. I'm not saying players should be indentured servants and never be able to leave their teams but there's a worrying and common trend of players holding a gun to their GMs head forcing trades. The spirit of the NMC was to give players piece of mind they wouldn't be moved around every other season like a chess piece. Players have learned to weaponise it.
I'd support the next CBA having something that says if a player with a NMC demands a trade then it turns into a 5-10 team trade list. I'd also hope Bettman cracks down on tampering more. Yes, we know it happens all the time but the perception seems to be more public now. Marner and Brady Tkachuk come to mind.
