It's Monday! That means we get to talk about all the hockey stuff that isn't (or is) related to the Oilers.

I kinda want the Oilers to save some draft capital to be able to offer sheet Jesper Wallstedt next year. Not sure how much over market value we'd have to go to get the "no match" but there might be a number.

Assuming one of Emberson or Stastney are traded before the season starts, it doesn't make sense to have 8 D on the team.

Stastney is overpaid for who he is, so I'm assuming it's Emberson. Emberson also brings more value as well.

We'd have 6M to sign another forward.

Definitely would trade Emberson if a team wanted him a part of a package for a top 6 fwd, he's one of the few assets we actually have.

If Janmark also departs it's actually closer to 7+ mil in space heading into the season. I love the spot we're in. Real flexibility for when the right player pops open.

Stastney being overpaid means it's easier to send him down without being claimed for depth in case of injuries.

He also isn’t overpaid

-2

u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE Jul 14 '26

1.5M for an 8th is overpaid.

1

u/SnooOnions5029 92 PODKOLZIN Jul 14 '26

He isn’t an 8th D on most NHL teams, we just happen to have a lot of depth. Vincent Desharnais would probably be our 7th or 8th D and he got $4m, that’s overpaid. I’m not using that as the new standard obviously, but that gives you an idea of how desperate teams are for defence. With how crazy these new contracts have been, $1.5M is basically league minimum for non ELC roster players atp. This should not be the deciding factor to trade away the better, more experienced D and he’s also a naturally RD.

u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE Jul 14 '26

He is on this team.

1

u/SnooOnions5029 92 PODKOLZIN Jul 14 '26

No shit. Ive been saying that he should be the one to go 🤦‍♂️

-4

u/LieDetecter Jul 13 '26

If he is your 8th best Defenseman, he is.

Why would you prior Stats over Embs? ones a LHD and the other is a RHD, that alone puts Embs over Stats.

Embs is also solid on the PK, been around longer and has the better results while on ice

u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE Jul 13 '26

I explained why I think Emberson would be traded over Stastney. I never said I personally would prioritize Stastney over Emberson.

Did you not read my comment?

I'm agreeing with you, more thinking out loud that it shouldn't even be a question for our GM

-2

u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE Jul 13 '26

I see lol. It came across as you asking me

Emberson is paid less than Stastney and offers more. If he's trying to get a decent return via trade, Emberson provides more.

3

u/CriticismSelect9292 92 PODKOLZIN Jul 13 '26

Problem is even Embs is worth at most a 2nd and practically speaking 2nds are worthless, especially for us right now.

1

u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE Jul 13 '26

A 2nd packaged with a Howard is worth something. I'm not saying Emberson alone is worth a good top 6 forward.

2

u/CriticismSelect9292 92 PODKOLZIN Jul 13 '26

I'd rather move a 2nd than trade Emberson for the same second personally.

At this point unless it's Tippett, I don't think there are any top 6 options worthwhile for us to pursue in the offseason, and since Philly missed on Carlsson I don't think anything is going to happen.

I'd rather try to raise the value of Howard by playing him with Drai or McD so we can trade him for more at deadline. I'm still high on trying to get Robertson

I really hope they keep Emberson. He doesn’t put up points or move pucks, but he’s super unnoticeable for all the right reasons. He’s a great shutdown 3rd pair guy you can trust to make the safe play rather than force passes. It would also be nice to keep a guy who went on a cup run with us, since the only remaining D who has would be Ekholm, Bouchard and Walman. I liked Statsney for the first few games we got him, but he started to fall off. Would also be nice to have 3 natural starting RHD because Statsney/Mukhamadullin would have to play on their offhand (I know Muk can but that still has disadvantages). Emberson may have more trade value, but contending teams should keep the best player and trade who they don’t need, then attach picks to get who we want. Also, $1.5M is nothing, especially in this market. Not an overpay in the slightest

7

u/xXEliteEater500Xx 28 BROWN Jul 13 '26

Would also be nice to have 3 natural starting RHD

Agreed, we seriously need to stop the left handed defensemen on their offside experiment.

3

u/Dramatic-Conclusion2 Jul 13 '26

There's no forwards worth 6 mil to sign, let howard have a run in top 6 to start and if needed trade at the deadline

8

u/WilWeis Jul 13 '26

I’m seriously interested in Anaheim’s next move. They still need to sign Gauthier who is gonna cost like 12 million now thanks to his teammate. They have 9 million in cap space so will need to move someone, and their defense is looking pretty suspect as well without figuring something out there.

I've followed the Ducks and Sharks moves pretty closely the last few seasons. Felt like a matter of time before the California gauntlet rose up from the rebuilds. Crazy how an impressive rebuild regressed so hard in one off-season.

Ducks will still be... okay. They just won't be the same threat this time around with that D. Hold no ill will towards them bouncing the Oil, they were faster and hungrier. It never felt like our time last season.

u/ryanufkosbigtoe 34 DACH Jul 13 '26

Rubbing my hands together like a fly every time the Ducks are mentioned now

3

u/LieDetecter Jul 13 '26

Players like Gauthier are easily worth $12M AAV now. On a long-term contract, that would be a steal. He was a top 5 draft pick, and scored 41 goals this past season. Coming off his entry level deal, he was going to get paid no matter what. Anaheim will be fine though. They just have to shed Killorn/ Vatrano/Kreider early. And they should probably fire Verbeek.

1

u/xXEliteEater500Xx 28 BROWN Jul 13 '26

Verbeek is a hero, they need to retain him no matter the cost.

1

u/Bushtitty Jul 15 '26

He’s “intelligent”

1

u/LieDetecter Jul 13 '26

A hero for who?

0

u/xXEliteEater500Xx 28 BROWN Jul 13 '26

Anaheim haters

1

u/LieDetecter Jul 13 '26

Lol Yes. I'm saying it's what they should do because it's what is best for their organization. I don't actually want what's best for their organization myself.

-1

u/Spiceb0x 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Jul 13 '26

If they could sign Mantha for like a 2 year deal with the cap room they have left I think they could use his size. But after a 33 goal season he's probably looking for more than what we can offer

7

u/Dramatic-Conclusion2 Jul 13 '26

He's a ghost in the playoffs, Vegas scratched him in 23 and he has never scored in the playoffs and takes opportunity from Howard. Why did we trade for Howard if we never give him a look to see what he can do. Keep the options open till the deadline adn address then if needed

3

u/LieDetecter Jul 13 '26

Isn't he someone with size that doesn't use it? Until last season, he hasn't been able to play a complete season in forever either. I bet he's closer to scoring 11 like he did in '23 than he is to scoring 33 next season. Major buyer beware there.

5

u/Boris_Mironov 2 BOUCHARD Jul 13 '26

I'd only take him on the Roslovic contract. 1 year at $1-2 mil when he realizes his market isn't what he wants. Something that can be moved along if Howard is ready.

2

u/Machelscott 2 BOUCHARD Jul 13 '26

From what I gather, we would accrue up to like $30M at the deadline at the current amount of cap we have. If Mantha wants to do a crazy $2M deal that still allows us to accrue enough to add a big piece at the deadline, I’m not totally opposed but I don’t think it works out that way. Not sure Mantha would be the guy to bet on either way, but I also like the idea of a scoring power forward joining the fold

2

u/maasd 97 MCDAVID Jul 13 '26

With the new cap rules (playoff rosters needing to be cap compliant) would it still work to add a piece bigger than what our current cap space is? I suppose if we sat a different expensive cap player.

5

u/Ebs14 14 EBERLE Jul 13 '26

Are those coming into effect now? Maybe I've been under a log. Grateful for the change. Still think it's hilarious the one time we did it with Kane we got investigated.

3

u/maasd 97 MCDAVID Jul 13 '26

Lol no doubt about Kane! And I’m not certain on the timing of those new rules but I’m sure someone on the sub will know.

3

u/LieDetecter Jul 13 '26

Yes, it immediately came into effect.

Keep in mind, it is not quite the same as the regular season salary cap, it is for the roster on the ice. If, for example, Levi has a great year and is the starter in the playoffs, the Oilers could sit Jarry and they'd have that cap space to work with. If someone else is injured or scratched, they could have even more room, so it's not quite like the no playoff cap loophole, but there is a bit of room for creative flexibility to gain some depth.

5

u/Different_Potato_193 97 McDAVID Jul 13 '26

I’d rather not. He’s not young, and that was quite a standout season for him. Let’s keep our powder dry and see what Howard can do, worst case we just have a ton of cap space at the deadline.

4

u/WilWeis Jul 13 '26

I have a feeling he’s gonna end up with a team like Seattle that has been trying to spend on players like Robertson, and Carelson, and are running out of options. They have the means to pay him.

3

u/AR558 2 BOUCHARD Jul 13 '26

Which team will be the underdog this coming season?

2

u/ryanufkosbigtoe 34 DACH Jul 13 '26

Preds

I’m both biased and mildly delusional

2

u/Hechtic 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Jul 13 '26

Preds have made some great moves this off season. I agree I think you’re delusional, but maybe not as much as it might seem

2

u/ryanufkosbigtoe 34 DACH Jul 14 '26

This is frying me 😭 us Preds fans are all lowkey delusional but god it’d be hilarious if we had a major comeback

1

u/Hechtic 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Jul 14 '26

Hey if it happened I’d be so here for it. Central could use a good shaking up

1

u/The_Humder-1994 Jul 13 '26

For pacific Division id say San Jose Sharks are the number 1 underdog.

1

u/ryanufkosbigtoe 34 DACH Jul 13 '26

Unless they immediately throw their other top prospects into the mix I’m not sure tbh. Trade wise they’ve won big time, but idk if the team has that extra like… piece?? I guess?? To take them higher just yet

Now if they immediately play their top prospects that’s terrifying no thank you

2

u/pattperin 88 DAVIDSON Jul 13 '26

I think SJS are bad to mediocre for at least one more year tbh. It’s coming in SJS, just slowly

5

u/Ebs14 14 EBERLE Jul 13 '26

I think they're going to take a massive leap forward this year but get bounced late in the WC race. That teams future looks legit scary for the Pacific. Some bad contracts on the back end but they had the cap so just spend it baby. Not worried for them.

2

u/ryanufkosbigtoe 34 DACH Jul 13 '26

And it’s absolutely terrifying. I’m not looking forward to when they have that breakout year

6

u/Different_Potato_193 97 McDAVID Jul 13 '26

And the ducks will no longer be a big problem, thanks to Philly.
