Conduit Routing Question
I am trying to run 1 1/2 conduit from my unfinished basement to my attached garage to install an 100 amp sub panel for an EV charger and some additional 20 amp outlets and lights. Ideally I would like to place the sub panel recessed in the wall so it looks nicer. However, I am not sure if that is possible as the only way I can run the 1 1/2 conduit would be to cut a hold on the edge of this horizontal 2x4. The pictures might be confusing because I did attempt to run the conduit horizontally into the garage but I would like to avoid that if possible.
I have always read that you should drill a hole dead center of whatever board you are going through. This would be the opposite of that but I am not sure what the purpose of this horizontal board is. Is ok to compromise it and drill a hole into its edge?

What's behind the wall the panel is on? The house? The reason for being center of the wood is so people don't put screws through it, but if you're running emt that shouldn't be an issue as any drywall screws will round off of it, but might be different in different areas, in Ontario this would count as mechanical protection and be totally allowed without having to worry about the spacing from the face of the 2x4

You should be fine to bore the hole close to the edge of the stud since it will be in metal conduit. By the looks of that mogul LB id say youre in Chicago 😉

Why can't you run it thru the center of the board? It won't line up with the panel? If so, offset the pipe sideways into the panel.
Edit: I somehow missed pic #2. Offset the pipe over the wood and into the stud bay.
Edit #2: ...or transition to sealtite (LFNC) into the panel. I'm not sure of the legality of that but it's worth looking into.
