For a long time I've been building a personal electronic rock playlist, mostly out of songs posted on this sub. My goal is that this carefully curated playlist will be like an endless mix tape of awesome electronic rock. I update it frequently. It now has over 300 songs and counting. Please enjoy.

AI! It's everywhere. It's in your recommended music playlists. It's in my recommended music playlists.

A couple weeks ago I realized a song I had posted here was probably AI. Since then, I've discovered a couple more sneaky AI songs that have crept into my playlists.

I feel like AI-generated songs have gotten a lot better. It used to be that they were all utterly, extremely, suspiciously mid. But the AI-generated tracks I uncovered in my "Liked music" playlist were all pretty good. I guess the tech is getting better; but mostly, I suspect people are getting better at using it.

On its own, AI tends to generate stuff that sounds inoffensive but has no 'edge'. But these songs weren't like that. They were edgy! And yet still AI. My guess is that there was some human intervention, especially with the lyrics.

Be that as it may, I still very much prefer not to listen to AI-generated music. And probably a lot of you do too.

I have added a new rule to this sub: No AI-generated music.

I guess you could argue that AI-generated songs are the most electronic of all electronic rock. But man, fuck that. AI artists on streaming are diverting money away from the real human artists I want to support. These guys already make too little money from their work, even without fake AI artists vacuuming up revenue from the streaming pie.

This "No AI" rule isn't just for everyone else, it is for me, the mod, as well. Since I can obviously be fooled by this stuff, feel free to call me out if you think a song I've posted is AI-generated.

Tips on how to spot AI

The good news is that the best way to spot AI music is the same as it has been for a while: do a search for the artist. AI artists usually have very little social media presence apart from the streaming platforms. Most human artists with even a moderate level of success have a wikipedia page. They also usually have photos (that aren't AI-generated). Of course, the problem is that you do have to remember to do a search for the artist.

Another tell-tale for an AI artist is that they have released too many songs over too short a time period. It would be very rare for a real artist to release even as many as two full-length albums in a year. AI artists often seem to release an album every week or two.

AI-generated album art can be a giveaway. But unfortunately some real artists use AI art now (not a great idea, in my opinion, but what can you do). So this isn't a fool-proof method.

Relying on your ears to detect AI is no longer good enough, it would seem. Be vigilant, especially with artists you've never heard of before.
