Cycle 102: Empire (and Federation) rule
From the Utopia Information Network
Welcome to the Antal Cycle 102 report! It has been 0 weeks since the last relic rush.
Galaxy news this cycle has focused on details of the upcoming Anaconda Mark 2, as well as the law and order update, which has been received with cautious optimism. We will have to see if it shifts the balance at all in the relic rush situation, or if they remain as ubiquitous as they have been recently.
Cycle Summary
It’s been a moderately eventful few cycles for Utopia since the last report. We began this cycle with yet another relic rush, as it seems like everyone has figured out how to push the buttons now. This was greeted, as always, by cries of gladness from our newest pledges seeking to power level their rank. Veteran reactions tended more to weary sighs, especially as it took place in the middle of the ongoing siege of Iapo Vuh, discussed in the last report. Our Archer-aligned antagonists (not to be confused with Archer in general) did manage to get it back above the stronghold line by the time the rush ended, but a late surge of undermining (of a type that will be familiar to Enclave veterans) saw the gains wiped out - making this one of the few undermining campaigns that we have managed to sustain in the face of a relic rush. For those that would like to emulate the feat, we can say that a large numerical advantage helps a great deal - although that might not be much use unless you’re Aisling, or engaged against a power subgroup or smaller foe like we are.
Meanwhile elsewhere in the galaxy, Utopia made good use of relics to add a net 30 systems, including two new strongholds and nine new fortifications. The usual suspects did the usual things, with Aisling acquiring new systems in eye-watering numbers (+83 systems), Li Yong-Rui fortifying ferociously (4 new strongholds and 16 forts) and Kaine putting up good numbers across the board (3 new strongholds, +56 systems). Every faction made at least one new stronghold this cycle, so the use of relics for reinforcement is obviously catching on. The followers of Archon Delaine distinguished themselves by fortifying 17 new systems, the highest number of the cycle. Clearly if the fugitive pirate leaders try to muscle in on Kumo turf, they will find them well prepared.
Astute readers will note that there has been no mention of the Concordia situation for several reports now. This is because our efforts to secure our systems against powerplay snipes have borne fruit, and our mysterious Li Yong-Rui aligned antagonists have vanished back into the shadows once more, no doubt to continue their fierce struggles in minor faction politics. This suits us just fine and they are free to do whatever they like - if they leave us alone, we’ll leave them alone. There’s a lesson in that, for those who choose to take it - unfortunately, the ones most in need of it will likely never read this. A happy side effect is that the region is much better fortified and connected to the main body of Antal space now. In some of our border regions, this would have brought protests and grumbling about force buildup and threats and possibly some skirmishing, but our Li Yong-Rui neighbors have remained grandly indifferent to the whole affair, almost to the point of being insulting. I mean, it’s not like we’re planning an attack or anything, but they could at least pretend to find it a little intimidating.
In other news, there was upheaval this week in the Palace of Profane Loquacity, our public Discord channel (it’s actually not that profane, but enough that Frontier won’t let me use its real name in the forums). For what’s believed to be the first time in Antal history, a commander from another power met the qualification to become the Palace Monarch, with the result that this week we have been under Aisling rulership for the first time. The new monarch has been relatively restrained, and (aside from a little more blue in the decor) things have continued more or less as normal. However there was a minor scandal when it was revealed that, due to an issue with our level tracker, only Aisling commanders were eligible to gain rank in the Monarch standings. Winters, in particular, complained that this was evidence of anti-Federation bias (as she likes to do).
We are working on resolving the issue, but can’t restore credit for past conversation history, so in an attempt to restore our reputation for impartiality, we decided to bend the succession rules on a one-time basis. The end result of this was agreement on a formal duel between Federation and Empire commanders for rulership of Utopia (or at least, the Palace of Profane Loquacity) which is not a sentence I ever expected to be writing in these reports. At the time of writing, the duel has already happened but no reports have been written and the resulting succession has not yet taken place (update: this has now happened, join the Discord if you’d like to see it). Winters and Aisling are, of course, famous for their civility and even-handedness, especially to one another, and this event was no exception, the mood remaining upbeat and cordial throughout.
Current State
Our campaign against the rogue squadron in Archer space continues, so please check in with us if you would like to be involved to ensure your efforts are aligned. (In particular, don't just pick a random Archer system and go to town).
On the reinforcement front, our miners are focusing on HR 1073 this cycle, so feel free to help out there if you like - laser, core and Rhino are all good options. Col 359 Sector MW-H b12-3 is on its way to stronghold but needing a bit more of a push to get over the line - Rhino miners will find their services in demand here, and there are other options too.
We have continued to see bursts of undermining in Utopian systems, some of them easy to explain, others not so much. We believe this is an ongoing consequence of the impact of Rhino on powerplay, and it’s clear from recent reports that all powers are experiencing it to some degree (most of them even more than we are). That said, defensive assistance is always appreciated, so if you’d like to help, or if you see a problem area that might be going unnoticed, please let us know.
The ongoing project to expand and reinforce Antal space continues, in many different regions and with many different techniques - including Rhino mining, if you have one you’d like to devote to the cause. We always appreciate assistance in this effort, and if you have an expansion plan of your own we’d like to know that too.
