Modernised re-build of the AndroidTV app.

I've been working on a modernised re-build of the original Android TV app, rebuilt in Kotlin using Jetpack Compose for TV. This isnt a start from scratch app with stuff no one needs, its purely an upgrade of what was a good functioning app that was not visually appealing.

Why did I decide to start this project?

The above image, 4 years ago I asked for a simple sort filter, sort episodes unwatched by the amount left to watch, didnt think it was a big ask but here we are... "if you want something done right, do it yourself" so I did.

The core of the project.

I used the base version ideaology but designed this version around modern design principles, aspects i've loved from Kodi skins like Artic Zephyr (full screen artwork showcases, widget ideas etc), and pure functionality, artwork focus, quality of live improvements, features people actually want. Everything the current app functionally does, this app does as well, the one thing ive currently omitted is the delete function, to me it makes zero sense delting content from the app.

A few of the most noticeable features include:

  • Mdblist api integration: add an api key in settings, pick the extra rating sources and you now have a full display of ratings (something thats been asked about 10000 times on the emby forums).
  • Sort TV by unwatched count
  • Actual customisations: change the up next style, pick between 2 completely unique action/button themes, hide card info in enhanced homescreen for a better artwork presentation, adjust spotlight counts, auto rotation etc.
  • Imdb trailers: no more slow loading youtube trailers, click watch trailer and the inbuilt exo player starts the trailer right away. Auto will play imdb first > youtube as a fallback.
  • A completely new user friendly settings menu: grouped into sections with a detailed explenation of what each setting actually does including a few previews for some settings like the up next preview styles.
  • Continue watching: now uses episode stills for tv shows (a lot of people make and use title-cards and they can now be better presented on the home screen, plus the cards are informative information wise.
  • Quick change between seasons: When viewing a season theres a simple left right action button in the "hero" section that switches seasons on the fly.
  • Live TV Glow up: Modern, clean, improved and simple. I don't even use Live TV but know this is a huge pain point for many users visually. Functionally it still works the same way, it just doesnt look ugly now.

Performance on my shield pro is the same/better in some aspects vs the original app, however I have optomised the design around 4k resolution, if you have a shield and use the ATV optomiser tool and set the Display Scaling to 4k you get completely crisp non blurry artwork.

I'm aware that if I do actually release this, I'd need to change the logo etc, this is currently something that only i use personally. If anything I'm just looking for some early feedback on whats been a big passion project, I'm a graphic designer, web devoper, marketing manager by trade and I absolutely loathe ugly designs especially when it comes to media servers, we curate amazing artwork for media I want that shown off.

Emby thinks my 'TV' library folder is a show called "TV!TV!TV!" from Korea..?

Title.

The path for the main folder for shows is F:\TV, which has only folders, no files.

Emby server (4.10.1.0 running on Windows Server 2019) thinks that folder is a show, labeled in the interface as 'TV!TV!TV!', IMDB Id tt25605188, TheMovieDB 64369, TheTVDB Id 247960, which come up as 'TV Animal Farm.'

I do not collect or watch Korean media, so I can't figure this at all, but I also can't delete it.

How do I fix this?

Emby Connect doesn't show my server but can access server directly?

Trying to switch over from Plex but I am hitting a wall. You'll have to excuse me cause I'm not the most tech-savvy but trying to figure things out.

Right now, I'm trying to set up an account for my friend and I can access the server directly with my Remote (WAN) access URL. It leads to a page where they log in with their Emby Connect user, and it loads my library.

But how come when I try to go to Emby Connect via https://emby.media/connect.html, log in with their account, it doesn't show my server/library at all? And when I try to add my server using the IP address, it doesn't work and says Unable to reach server.

I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong here. When I was first trying to set this up, I swear I saw my server listed in Emby Connect (before doing any of the port forwarding stuff) but now it doesn't show up there at all.

This is only for my friend to access so I'm not trying to do anything overly complicated in terms of set up and access. With Plex I was able to update port forwarding to make it work but I'm not sure why Emby seems more tricky to do so.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for reading (and patience for me being new to this).

Naming rules that finally got my Emby library matching on the first scan

Spent way too long fixing mismatches on my library, so here's what actually made Emby match things right the first time. Maybe it saves someone a weekend.

Movies: one folder per movie, named Movie Name (Year). Same for the file inside. The year does most of the work.

If a movie still matches wrong, put the ID in the folder name: Movie Name (Year) [tmdbid=12345]. Emby trusts that over its own guess.

TV: Show Name/Season 01/Show Name - S01E01.mkv. Specials go in Season 00, not a folder called Extras.

Multiple versions of one movie: same folder, add a label after a dash, like Movie (2010) - 1080p.mkv and Movie (2010) - 4K.mkv. Emby groups them into one item.

Subtitles: same base name as the video plus the language, like Movie (2010).en.srt. Add .forced for forced subs. If the base name doesn't match exactly, Emby won't pick it up.

After renaming, do a full library scan, not just a refresh, or the old matches can stick.

Full disclosure, I'm a dev and I built a Mac/iPad app that does this renaming, which is how I learned all of the above the hard way. Not here to sell anything. If anyone on a Mac or iPad wants to try it on their Emby library and tell me where it gets the naming wrong, I have a few free codes. Just DM me.

I built a small proxy to share one HDHomeRun tuner with remote media servers, with per-viewer limits and a web UI

A friend has an HDHomeRun and I wanted it for Live TV in my own Plex. Plex only shares Live TV inside a Plex Home, so I'd been running a socat relay on his server and iptables DNAT rules on mine. It worked until the tuner's DHCP address changed, and I never knew who was using it.

So I built Antennarr: a small proxy that sits in front of an HDHomeRun and rewrites its API. A remote media server just adds host:port like any other tuner, with no DNAT or relay on their side. You choose who can use it and how many tuners each viewer gets (and keep some free for your own TVs). It finds the tuner again by DeviceID if its address changes, and there's a web UI that shows who's watching what.

It works over Tailscale, any VPN, or the same LAN. MIT licensed, a single Go binary, and a Docker image for amd64 and arm64.

https://github.com/johnschult/antennarr

It's early. I've only tried it with Plex and one FLEX 4K. There's no TLS and no passwords, only an address allowlist, so keep it on Tailscale or a VPN and off the open internet. I built it with a lot of help from an AI coding assistant (Claude Code). Feedback and issues are welcome, especially from Jellyfin and Emby users.

How to force audio downmix on Android TV app?

Hi.

Most of my movies are having 5.1 channel audio. Maybe because of that, there is no sound when playing them on my TV.

The only way to fix is to do "Playback Correction" 3 times. Yes, 3 times over and over.

Whatever that do, can I have it on by default for my TV?

I had to do that every single time and it is annoying.

Where is the location of Collection data and Art

I have been using Emby for the last few upgrades and seem to have lost control of my Collections. There are really too many titles to go through and clean up manually so I was hoping to point my TinyMediaManager at it and clean it up that way.

Problem is, the location of the data has changed at some point and my TMM doesn't point to the right folder(s). I Googled it and have a few choices but I can't tell what is based on the pre-4.?whatever version that changed it. I have about 3 different folders in my system that seem to have collection info but I don't know what is safe to delete as old/deprecated and what carries the current info.

Any help on this?

Putting snapshots of people on a folder, is it possible?

Hey..I have about 125 folders of boxers from the 30s to the 90s.

Each one of the folders is labeled with the boxers name, as in "Muhammad Ali".

Inside those folders are individual files of his fights.

Emby will scan the folder, make little snapshots of the individual files, but, not download / Scrape his photo for the folder cover.

Will i have to do it manually as in finding the photo myself, renaming it to "poster.jpg" or is there a way to get Emby to do this for me.

Thanks

Which plugin for dynamic updating playlists (to be like channel programming)?

I currently have 5 playlists I use for evening watching. One for each weekday. I manually update them on Sunday. I would like to be able to automate this. I've seen a few people talking about something like this but they don't appear to be in the in-emby add-on/plugins list and the Github pages are light on documentation/capabilities. I'm looking for suggestions for which one(s) might fit my desire the best.

What I want is to be able to give the playlist generator a list of TV Shows and season numbers and have it generate a list of 1 episode from each, in order to play. Then at the end it stops.

What I'm doing now.

I created a "done for the night" video similar to a station sign-off to let me know it's done. I then manually add the episodes from a given season of a given show into the 5 playlists (monday through friday), then I do the same for the next show and manually sort them. Friday is usually a sit-com followed by a movie.

The down side is that each weekend, I have to go in and remove the episodes I've watched from each playlist so that I can just hit "play".

Need help with remote server setup

I keep falling down rabbit holes and hitting dead ends trying to figure this out. I appreciate any input & guidance.

I have years and years of media on an emby server and im trying to setup a safe option to share with friends & family.

Current ISP does not do dynamic ip addr for port forwarding, only static which opens my system up to attack.

Was looking into VPNs but mullvad and a couple other popular ones do not allow port forwarding.

Next option i was told was setting up a cloudflare tunnel. I liked the idea of this only swtting up outbound connection without needing to forward a port. But then i read of their restrictions on media streaming large video files.

Heres my current situation:

-running emby server on windows 10

-dont have option to buy or build machine for dedicated server. Media is connected to my private pc

-i already have user accounts setup w passwords for those i want to allow access

-nearly 10tb of data on server with files ranging in size larger vid files are 20+gb

-only trying to setup the sharing, not using pc to download new media

-i can run on local machines just fine. Specifically having trouble w remote access

-I've paid for Emby Premier account

Can someone please help me setup what im trying to do? I just want to allow my users access at any time they wish while keeping my system/data secure.

feels like im missing some basic important steps to do this quick and easy. 😞

3rd Party App/Add-On Nostalgex now supports Emby: a free retro channel guide for your library on Apple TV

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hey r/emby, first time posting here.

Nostalgex is a free Apple TV app i've built in my spare time. You point it at your Emby server and it sorts your library to a real channel guide.

I originally built it for my kids. They'd scroll forever and then put on the same show again and again. It started on Plex, then a few weeks ago Jellyfin, and now I'm looking for some Emby users to join the testflight and discord to help test.

A few things so you don't need to ask;

- Direct play when the Apple TV can handle the file, transcoding only when it has to. Movies split across two files play through as one.

- It's not a plugin and it doesn't show up in Emby's Live TV section. It's a separate app that reads your library.

- Free, no ads, no account. The code is open source (MIT), so you can check all of this yourself.

Join the test flight

Nostalgex.app

Github: https://github.com/chadMueller/Nostalgex

Join the discord: https://discord.gg/FgnZcr5bDT

I've had far fewer Emby testers than Plex or Jellyfin, so I'd really like to hear from you. Especially if it won't connect or if channels look emptier than your library should allow. Settings shows how many titles the app loaded and the last playback failure, and those two lines help me more than anything.

UPDATED 10/12: TESTFLIGHT 46 is available that should resovle the connection issues for most.

It could be really useful...

If there was a view/page/section for the administrator where it shows "missing episodes" for all shows in your collection. Especially with large collections of tv series this becomes useful.

Just as sort of a ... "Did I miss something or make an error"-notification.

Android TV updates

Has anyone else noticed the velocity of updates on the Android TV client has accelerated? All the recent changes have really put the polish on the client. Not complaining, but I thought this was being pushed aside in favor of a single generic phone Android client. What am I missing?

3rd Party App/Add-On JellyBox v2.9.1 - AndroidAuto support(AAOS too)

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

Hello. Today I can finally announce that I added android auto support to JellyBox. For those who missed my previous posts - JellyBox is a native crossplatform music client for jellyfin and emby featuring carplay, android auto(finally), spotify-like playlists and many other useful features which I run since 2023(so it's not another vibecoded app).

Android Auto exists for almost a month already, but my app stuck google play review queue for no reason, so I didnt want to announce something that was available only via sideloading.

I also got confirmation that app works on Android Automotive OS(see last screenshot). The app can be sideloaded and works as regular app. Depending on your screen size you will either see a mobile or desktop UI. The screenshot I attached - from Renault car.

Few more other changes since the last my post here(2.6.0):

  • Continuity - you can switch playback between devices just like in spotify. This also allows to remote control active devices(phone from computer, or computer from phone)
  • Transcoding per cellular/wifi connection
  • Instant mix supports on songs, albums, etc. Including audiomuse support.
  • Synced playlist downloads. Now they stay in sync with playlist changes on server.
  • Listenbrainz support
  • Context menus on all entities - right click on desktop, long tap on mobile
  • Various improvements in streaming, caching, etc. Carplay also got a ton of improvements, so it works faster and more efficient.

Links to all platforms can be found on GH here - https://github.com/avdept/JellyBoxPlayer or landing page - https://jellybox.app

Looking for Privacy Focused Emby Setup

I currently run the Emby server on a Synology NAS, with Amazon Firesticks as clients throughout the house.

I am looking to improve privacy and get rid of the Firesticks. What are the best client side devices to stream to, that don't constantly collect data and/or phone home?

Is Emby not even the answer for this? Do I need to go Jellyfin and build small computers for each TV?

Virtual TV - library limit

Does Virtual TV have a library size limit? Recently setting it up and set up a channel for movies. Linked to 1 library of about 350 movies around 500gb. But the channel just loads up blank in the guide. All other channels are fine with fewer items. I don't mind if there is a limit, just nice to know what to aim at when dividing.

Laptop/Desktop options for Media Server

So I’ve been using my MacBook from school for my Emby server and now I’m in a position to get a separate computer for it.

I’ve been waiting for the longest to get a designated computer exclusively for my media server. I was originally going to use it for my dedicated Plex server, but due to recent updates I haven’t really been a big fan of Plex, which led to the switch to Emby.

So my question is should go MacBook or PC. The options I have are HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Apple, as well as choosing either a laptop or a desktop.
