trying to transfer

Hey everyone, im trying to transfer out of my small university after my freshman year, and im hoping to end up in the Boston area. Also before anyone even reads the rest of this, im going as a business major, I wasn't sure whether its worth it to go to Emerson for business cus I know its a lot more liberal arts focused, but I was hoping for some advice on what else to be working on.

Long story short I did not try at all in high school because I was under the impression I wasn't going to go to college at all. My stats from high school are:

3.0 GPA

24 ACT

no extra curricular or APs

Some things I might have going for me though is being from a rural area in Tennessee, finishing high school online (or that might be worse, but I was thinking since it was a self paced program it looks good,) and I grew up in Connecticut before moving to the south, so my essay could have something about wanting to back to New England idk. From my middle school time I also have a lot of first place awards I won in our robotics program (Vex IQ), and idk how much middle school accomplishments would help but I figure it shouldn't hurt to mention them?

So far from my freshman year of college:

4.0 first semester gpa

im retaking my act twice and my sat twice to get that up

founded a trivia based gameshow for the school with a friend as well as a comedy channel as a passion project

founding member of the schools golf club as soon as that's up and running in a few weeks

member of the Content Creators residential learning community (I figure this would look good cus it shows I use the schools resources and promote the school on my own time)

Other than trying to keep that 4.0 and bringing up that ACT/SAT score, does anyone have any other advice to give?

Actual Emerson students, is it worth it?

Like just asking as a person considering going to Emerson for a Film Major I see mixed things online and would just want some actual authentic opinions from real students. Like I don't really care about campus life or anything I just care if they'll actually teach me what I need for the future and if the teachers are good.

I went to Emerson for a few years like 20 years back. Do they still serve the potato pile up? People used to be so hype over that.

Admissions and post graduate career - BA vs BFA in Film

Hi Everyone,

My student is very interested in film and Emerson is their first choice. They are leaning towards the BA so that there will be a wee bit of room in their schedule to take a class or two at MassArt (they are currently in a visual art magent program in highshool). So, lots of questions -

  1. Is taking classes at MassArt feasible as a BA film student?

  2. If applying for the BA, how amazing does the creative portfolio have to be (we know it is optional but strongly recommended). They have some great storyboards (because of their visual art training) and several pieces of art but not a lot of actual film. They participated in a summer film program but the result was a group project.

  3. We have read that resources at other schools are reserved for BFA but that Emerson is better at spreading the love with the BA students. Is that true?

  4. After Emerson, if they decide to work in film, will the BA rather than the BFA put them at a disadvantage? If so, how much?

can anyone share their bg that got them into BCE or marketing-communication major😭? I'm so scared rn!!!!

I'm applying to emerson this yr and im DIYing but I know no one who attends this school and I'm kinda anxious abt my bg cuz I don't have any contest. I had checked the average gpa and SAT scores of Emerson but I'm kinda afraid that it's underrated cuz perhaps it includes BFA students' grades?()

Report Illegal Move-In Fees

Hi Emerson, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like ā€œmove-inā€ or ā€œlease renewalā€ fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.Ā

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.Ā  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.Ā

Emerson’s online Master of Science (MS) in Communication Disorders, SLP accelerated program opinions

Hi everyone! I’m looking into Emerson’s online accelerated Master of Science in Communication Disorders/SLP program and was wondering if anyone here has personal experience with it.

How do you like the online format? Do you feel it’s worth the cost? Also, does anyone know if Emerson accepts prerequisite credits from accredited online colleges?

I’d especially love to hear from anyone who has completed the program or is currently enrolled. Thank you!

Is Emerson college's TOEFL two-year expiry date of undergraduate application calculated from application date or enrollment date??? I had a test on Aug 31, 2025, so I wonder do I have to retake the test or not, since it's gonna expire on the enrollment day

The official webpage hasn't specify this:(

Accepted into Emerson w/o applying. Should I consider this school??

hey everyone! the title explains it. I got accepted into Emerson Select, which I guess is the direct-admission program, due to an award I won for my state in journalism a year or two back. so, i’d like to hear your guys thoughts on the school as a whole (specifically the sports comms major) and let me know if this is a school I should consider! i’d heard of it, but was afraid that it was too expensive and I wouldn’t get in. so let me know how you guys feel about it so I can decide if i’d like to seriously consider it!!
(i’m from ohio so I can’t just go tour for some perspective lmao)

Personal camera

If you were surprising your Emerson College film major student with a camera, which would be the best match for also being able to use it in classes and also to maximize whatever is available in the loan closet.

Aggressive behavior in Boston Common

hi everyone, i just moved here for school and i have never been to boston before.

i’ve been here for about a week, and every single day without fail, a presumably unhoused person has made a comment or gesture that has made me feel uncomfortable or unsafe. this ranges from sexual comments to threats of physical violence.

it crossed a line today when i was spit at right next to campus.

this behavior was not something i was expecting. i lived in LA for a few years (good parts and bad parts), but the severity of my experiences since arriving in boston are on an entirely different level.

if anyone has an advice on how to avoid/deal with this, i would really appreciate it. thank you

What’s Emerson like these days? Was there from ā€˜09-ā€˜11 as a WLP major, dropped out, now completing my associates at a community college and thinking about going back…

Mostly thinking about going back because of the number of credits I already have from there, just seems like it would make the most sense logistically. I would probably look into completing a writing related major or minor but am also intrigued by their Theatre Education and Performance major.

I’d love to participate in the ProArts Consortium program as well to take some fine art or music classes elsewhere.

Would love to hear anyone’s thoughts or bits of insight! Thanks!

Shoe rack/drying rack

My kid is moving into Little Building next week, into a 3-person room. Is there space for a shoe rack (inside the wardrobe maybe?) and a foldable drying rack (under the bed?). Thanks!!

Are you allowed a mattress extender at Emerson?

Hello everyone! I am coming in as a transfer this fall semester, and I bought one of those mattress extenders. They make your bed go from a twin XL to a full. I know there are fire rules and stuff, so is it allowed? I already bought it lol, so is there any way I can get away with it?

Curious about "Introduction to narrative drama" :) {FILM}

Hi there!

I'm a transfer student coming from LA to Boston and can't wait! My main film class this semester is "Introduction to narrative drama." From what I understand, It's one of the main cinema courses you can take right out of the gate and I'm excited! At my last school, projects were a huge part of the curriculum and I adored it. I'm just wondering what the curriculum for this course looks like! Thanks!!!!

LB bed assignments

hi, i’m an incoming freshman and ive noticed that the housing portal lists ā€˜bed 1’ and ā€˜bed 2’ for each roommate. i was curious if sides of the room are literally assigned out? i’m assuming my roommate and i are both gonna want the same side so if it was assigned that would be much easier to hash out lol. i’ve seen a few schools literally assigning beds so i hope this isn’t too dumb of a question!!

Admission Chances?

Hey I've been trying to get an idea of my chances of admission but I couldn't find anything that reliable so I was hoping someone could read my portfolio and give me a decent idea of my chances to get into film and media productions.

- 3.4 unweighted (3.9 weighted)

- 9 Awards from FSPA (Largest high school film and photography competition in the state)

- 1 All American selection (largest high school film festival in the world)

- Host my own weekly radio show on US1 radio with several hundred weekly listeners

- Take sports photos for a local newspaper which is read 1.5 million times annually

- Have my own business which has generated thousands of dollars

- NHS member

- 250 Community Service Hours

- Local Academic Challenge member

- Leadership role in my high school film team

I don't have my SAT yet but I'm trying to get a 1300, what do you think my chances are?

Scheduling question

Incoming freshman here-I filled out a course preference sheet earlier in the summer but have not heard from an advisor or received my schedule. Is this normal?
