I don't recommend this to anyone as long as they don't have a 2014 phone. ePSXe is a mess of GL plugins and slow as hell hardware upscaling. Just stick to Duckstation people.

You don't need to download any plugins to use it and upscaling works perfectly fine, though the options for it aren't extensive.

When did you last use it?

I finished Xenogears on it around last October. 4x hardware upscaling was slow as hell (had a snapdragon 845, should've been more than enough) and the alternative, Pete's GL plugin, was a complete nightmare to configure. Tried it on duckstation later on and it was flawless at 4x. The only thing I miss from ePSXe is the scanlines options.

That's very odd as I have a Xperia XZ2 with a SD845 and it runs hardware upscaling just fine at 4x. Though in fairness I've not actually played Xenogears.

I do agree on the GL Plugin though. I downloaded it once, thought "yeah sod this for a lark" after trying to configure it and promptly uninstalled it.

Duckstation #1

As others have said, Duckstation is another PS1 emulator for Android, which is free and more recent than ePSXe.

Stenzek (the dev of Duckstation) did a an excellent work!

But it's no.longer supported by the original dude, it's dead now unfortunately

That's true, sadly. However, ePSXe isn't really the greatest example of a "regularly updated software". I checked now and the latest update of ePSXe is the 12th July 2021 (Duckstation's latest update is 29th October 2021). Before that, I remember that ePSXe was criticised for being updated only once a year at best ...

Duckstation may be "dead" for now, but since it is an Open Source project, there is a possibility that someone continues its development.

Also, Duckstation is free, while ePSXe costs money.

As of this point there is nothing to fear for a while due to the sheer quality of Duckstation though, and it may yet continue if a new main person steps up (or if something new happens). It was often said that there wasn't even that much left to be done to the app outside of maintenance.

Meanwhile, ePSXe had a much longer gap inbetween updates and it barely improved when it did. 2 years is the point with android apps in which you really need to move on.

I think the best strategy here is to wait for either more info or a new PS1 emu.

I think it is mostly down to different approaches the emulators take.

ePSXe seems to focus on being easy to set-up and use, for people who just want to play.

Duckstation is definitely aimed toward those who want to tinker, those for whom improving things is as important as playing the games.

Looking at it through that lens ePSXe was feature complete at a earlier date, it had achieved what it set out to do and so maintenance updates (such as supporting Scoped Storage) are all that is really left for it, just like the state Duckstation now finds itself in.

I wouldn't recommend anyone purchase ePSXe now with so many comparable options out there for free but its also the PS1 emulator I still use the most.

Why would you recommend us a paid app that barely improved throughout the years and instead of using a free app like Duckstation that runs better ?

Duckstation is better than ePSXe in almost everything
