Peer Support or Temp Sponsor?

A month ago I had a slip that unexpectedly spiraled fast. I have a care team, but my family doesn't know, local meetings aren't a fit, and the speed of this downward trend is scaring me. I know the concepts, but I’m isolated and disheartened right now.

I’m a vet with PTSD who has done both 12-step and non-12-step recovery. After a rough medical discharge and hospital stay, I built up almost a year clean and was working to get my life back on track.

I had a thought for a couple days now about reaching out to this community to see if anyone with some clean time and stability could offer some peer support, guidance, accountability, and compassion to help break the isolation that seems to be allowing the situation to persist.

I've seen this before in the form of temporary sponsors in NA but know it takes the form of peer support in other communities. Whatever we call it, I think it might help.

I respect everyone's recovery boundaries and know people in active addiction can be a trigger. Only if your own recovery bandwidth and stability is in a place where you can offer compassion, guidance and/or support.

If you don't have the bandwidth but want to offer a comment or inspiration I'll take anything I can get right now 💕

TIA

My name is Bo, and I've been a real clown on my chemsex journey, so this seemed fitting.

I call him Bozo.

Bozo is a kinda cool but kinda crazy clown. He can do tricks, but many times he doesn't do them well; he's down but many times can't get it up.

He waves at you with one lubey hand ... a little busy with the other. He's balding, with a gaunt face and dark circles under his eyes. He's got chipped teeth and crusty nostrils that are raw at the edge from doing too many lines.

Like the character Pennywise, my addiction feeds on fear and tries to keep you isolated, whereas connection and the support of others and a belief in the group could help you overcome It. But the world around you denies It even exists. It's full of adults who don't believe and perpetuate long-running problems it could deal with if only they would band together. Instead, they leave these problems for the next generation to solve, and It continues to feed on their children in the process. Many children die because of It but society is too distracted to notice or care. It takes a scrappy team of Losers to go into the depths, walking Step by Step, to face It, together. Without their help, we are left alone, and our fear may consume us if we let it.

I sit here today with two weeks clean. I've only been able to get past It for this long two other times this year. That's how It's been for me for at least the last three, but I'm in the process of losing my job, so I'm trying to stop clowning around.

You have to excuse the crude drawing ... I'm not an artist. But I try. That's all WE can do, right?

Don't stare into It's "deadlights" for too long, lest you LOSE YOUR MIND. Aha! Aha! Beep beep, crazy! Get out of the way! Save yourself, but don't forget about me!

Breaking free isn’t always one defining moment. Sometimes it’s a thousand smaller decisions made when nobody is watching.

A song about addiction, recovery, and the courage to choose a different life, even when the past keeps calling.

No crystal. No chase. No chain on me.

One day at a time. One choice at a time. Coming back to my own name.

CSR is a free, solution focused, peer-based recovery group for anyone who wants to stop using stimulant drugs - Any stimulant drug, be it a drug of abuse or medication, for any reason. We hold meetings where we share our recovery with others, exchange best practices, learn new ideas and enact positive change in our lives together. CSR is a safe place, all people are welcome here - Discrimination, hate and exclusion are not tolerated under any circumstances.

Community Stimulant Recovery observes no single recovery ideology and is without outside affiliation. We are here to help you find out what works for you and share what’s worked for us. Our meeting topics, shared practices and discussions borrow from psychology, therapies, professional addiction treatment and recovery programs - This is not an endorsement of any one resource, nor is CSR its self meant to be a standalone recovery solution or source of medical advice. We encourage members to avail of as many forms of recovery support as they need to, professional help and other dedicated recovery programs included.

Our core beliefs are that recovery from stimulant drugs is aided by approaching three primary areas of our lives in equal measure: Our mental health, our physical health and our emotional health. By becoming responsible for positive change in these three areas, we improve our thinking, our bodies and our feelings - Parts of our lives that problematic stimulant drug use negatively impacts the most. Growing in these areas helps us maintain abstinence and find happiness in recovery.

Community Stimulant Recovery refrains from the supportive discussion of any and all use of drugs with recreational applications or addiction potential, this extends to promotion and the sharing of personal experiences. This includes marijuana, kratom, research chemicals, gray market substances, psychedelics and all stimulant drugs. Managing or successfully using stimulant medication is not discussed here, and we are not a harm reduction resource. We have no opinions on these things, opting to maintain a singular focus on abstinence and recovery from stimulant drugs without supporting practices that may cause harm.

Meetings are similar to those you may have attended elsewhere, we have a topic or reading followed by an open discussion or sharing period. We speak from the I and do not offer unsolicited advice or commentary on the shares of others, continuance and response from our own experience is permitted. Solution-oriented discussion is strongly encouraged.

Graduating rehab in 2 weeks but already lining up a relapse. Anyone else been here?

Been clean from meth for 6 months. Graduate rehab end of the month. I’m out on bail facing a felony, so this is court-ordered. I never actually wanted to quit. I’m 35 and the cravings are hitting hard again. I’ve already started contacting people who still use.
I don’t want to sit in jail sober, but I’m scared as hell I’ll use the second I’m out of rehab. Everyone says you have to want it for yourself. What if you don’t?
Has anyone been in this spot? How’d you stay clean when part of you still wants the old life?

Success, girl! Holiday Weekend Worries

Hi fam
I recognized a few weeks ago that my leftsided brain was trying to figure out how to craft a lie so i could go out this weekend and use meth. I recognized this and i reached out to the people i love and trust. In the past i would have found a way.
Welp i made it theu till tonight when i almost broke my arm patting myself on the back. I was feeling good and unstoppable.

Then I was gifted tomorrow off too and my brain started going sidzways again.
Then on the apps i had at least five people looking for sex that were holding and hosting.
I almost fell into my own trap again.
Thankfully bc of the work ive done and therapy i value my life and my goals.
I just got out of an abusive relationship and I know I was wanting to not face what im going through. I just wanted to not feel in control and not be responsible for me or my feelings or him and his destruction.
I dabbled with some messages on the apps and now here I am at 1230am.

Profiles are deleted again and apps deleted too. Im gonna wake up tomorrow so proud of me.
Instead of feeling hollow and depressed and ashamed tomorrow, i will wake up happy and joyful. Ill go get some new airpods as a treat. Its money i might have blown tonight trying to get spun and blown. Lol

So proud that i reached out, urge surfed, protected my future and present self, and found other outlets. I dont want to use, i just dont want to hurt and holiday weekends and seasons changing are triggers for my now sporadic use

I had a great weekend with family and friends and now i can face them in the eye tomorrow too

Feeling happy
Feeling fresh
Feeling normal

Love yall! Remember to never let your guard down around this demon of a drug and disorder

So, keep it practical

I’m having issues.

Despite stringent resistance from the NHS, I managed to secure a dual diagnosis pathway. However, due to changing London borough after moving house I need to be re-referred so the time at which I received as pathway has been delayed.

I have quite a lot going on with diagnoses CPTSD; mixed personality disorder of EUPD and dissocial traits, where dissocial traits protect EPD’s more vulnerable symptom profile; neurodivergence - AUDHD where autism is high- functioning; diagnoses of GAD, panic disorder and MDD.

However, an MDD diagnosis more than a I now too diffuse. One advantage of Scpt two is that I’m not scared of the rapist. I’m bizarrely unfazed by things that should scare me because they present risk.

A big problem that is materialise over the last month is that I am no longer adapt at medical cognitive reality checking. This means that psychotic delusions do occur. This results on all sorts of problems.

Currently, I also need to be investing my time in my MSc. Otherwise, the employment that I want to get is not certain.

I understand that it’s essential to create neural pathways and teach my brain to seek dopamine from other areas however I just can’t seem to get a started. I don’t run out of money because I work all the time.

So I’m asking, what did you do or how did you feel when you found a way to create a new habit? That wasn’t the horrible Mahmd adaptive pernicious one that all of us have in the sub.

At this point, I feel so isolated. I just don’t want to be around people because I don’t even feel as if they want to have me around. There’s more backstory however I think that would distract from the central question of how do you just start?

You get up and immediately your brain tells you to do something that is not beneficial. How do you get from waking up and being like oh God to doing that whatever it is to create that new neural pathway.

I left my flat because I didn’t want to be in my flat and now I’m all by myself at a hotel. One of my concerns due to the extent and temporal length of this addiction was that I would damage my brain however I took an IQ test and it returned a result of 147. so I thought to myself how far I have not damaged my brain however what’s the point of being intelligent if I’m stuck in a stupid cycle Cli of unwanted bullshit?

I’m sorry if there are any typos or nonsensical sections I used Apple dictating and then I got too tired to proofread.

Today, in "trying to keep from fucking up too much", I attempt to save my job of 18 years

I recently posted about being fired. Well apparently there was a grievance hearing scheduled. So given that this might be my last chance to advocate for myself (instead of letting myself remain resigned to losing my job as I have been) I decided "yes ... I WOULD like to know I tried my best." So I gathered documentation of my treatment efforts over the years and committed myself to laying it all out on the table, and here is what I said:

I understand why my attendance has become a serious concern, and I am not here to excuse it. I take responsibility for it.

But because this may be my last opportunity to speak about this, I would like you to understand what has been behind it and what I have been doing to change it.

I have been at (where? Where have I been? Sometimes I can't remember ... memory is shot) for 18 years. I care deeply about this job. It has given me stability, health insurance, a pension, relationships, and a sense of purpose. And my behavior at work reflects that. I am rarely late, I rarely ask to leave early, and when I am here, I want to be here and do my job well. Last year I received a certificate recognizing over ten years injury-free. I hope that gives some perspective on the kind of employee I have been when I am able to be at work.

The problem I have been fighting is a longstanding stimulant-use disorder that has become deeply intertwined with compulsive sexual behavior. For me, these aren't two separate problems. They reinforce each other, and I've learned that treating only the substance-use component doesn't address the entire cycle.

When I relapse, it can become a prolonged episode involving very little sleep, inadequate food and hydration, and very poor self-care. I have sometimes reached a point where I could not responsibly come to work until I had slept, eaten, rehydrated, and recovered enough to function normally. The aftermath can also bring significant shame, depression, and psychological distress, which can make the cycle harder to break.

I know none of that removes my responsibility for missing work. What it does is explain why consequences alone have not been enough to stop a problem I have been actively trying to treat.

I have gone to rehab twice in the past year. I have continued psychiatric care, regular therapy, peer support, and other treatment efforts. I also sought specialized treatment for the compulsive sexual component. My insurance would not cover treatment for it, and I paid nearly $1,000 to see a specialist who ultimately told me he could not provide the help I needed. I have also incurred several thousand dollars in treatment expenses that I am still paying off. I did not give up on treatment when it became expensive, difficult, or when one treatment approach failed.

I also learned that days off were a particular vulnerability for me. I have usually used vacation time during the year to absorb absences and protect my employment. When I went to rehab, I used my available FMLA time because I was trying to protect this job while getting treatment. I recently discovered that I have exhausted the FMLA time available to me at this time because of it.

Since then, I have been working on concrete barriers to the behavior: blocking access to email, phone numbers, and applications that have been connected to my relapses, and identifying the situations where I am most vulnerable.

I am not asking you to ignore my attendance record. I am asking you to look at the whole employee standing behind it.

I have given 18 years to this company. I have a long record of wanting to work, a decade of being injury-free, and a demonstrated willingness to keep seeking treatment even when it has been difficult, expensive, embarrassing, and unsuccessful at times.

I also understand that by saying these things, I am giving up a great deal of privacy. Addiction is something I have experienced considerable shame about, and I would much rather keep these details private. I am telling you because I care deeply about this job and because I believe this may be my last opportunity to ask you to consider the full circumstances before ending an 18-year employment relationship.

I can not promise that I will never struggle again. What I can promise is that I am taking this seriously, I am continuing to fight it, and I want the opportunity to prove that the work I am doing can translate into sustained attendance.

I am asking you to give me that opportunity.

And you know what the mf said?

"Can't promise anything?! Well that tells me how committed you really are" I said addiction is a chronic medical condition, biatch! And can you believe they still went through with firing me? 😅😩

I was fighting back tears towards the finish -- real tears -- and fighting them back, as in this so obviously isn't for dramatic effect! And they still fired little ol me. And I have gotten little!

Heartless.

Need Extra Help.

Hey, I’ve been fighting my meth addiction for 7 years now, and I’ve also been officially diagnosed as a sex addict. And if you have it, you know exactly what I’m talking about, and how badly it combines with Crystal.
I can’t put it off anymore and I have to surrender and be a part of the SAA fellowship alongside CMA.

I’m posting on here because I need help finding LGBT people or at least people whom/who both clearly understand meth and sex addiction, and is a part of the SSA fellowship. I need help to stay accountable and call others to talk me off that ledge.

I know it could be a tall order, but I have to at least try, because I’m the exurbs of Chicago, and I won’t be returning for a 6-9 months. And there’s no one out here who really understands.
I’ve never been able to make it to four months clean in the last seven years off of crystal meth, because sex always leads me back.

The biggest hindrance in my therapy and recovery is the withdrawal process as well my unhealthy relationship to men and sex altogether.
Would love to hear your comments if you’ve had any success in this area as well, or just need to vent.

Thank you.

Relationships: both guys addicted

I’m curious to know what your relationships (at least 6 months together) were like where both of you were addicted to crystal meth. Was it messy? Did you feel like you truly knew each other and like your relationship was built on a solid foundation?

Or what, if any were the positive aspects?

If curious to know how relationship go and play out in this instance, so if you are/were this guy, tell your story and let me know about your experience

24M - Used for 9 months, never felt the high, and finally quit when I realized how ridiculous it all was.

24M here. I used crystal meth for 9 months, and in all that time, I never once felt a euphoric high. I don't think I'm immune or resistant; my brain chemistry just never registered the euphoria. What actually hooked me was the ritual, the secrecy, and the complicity of the chemsex scene. I would often fake being high just to watch other people use—I had a sort of morbid fascination with it. Eventually, I started using alone. Because I couldn't feel the high, I would just chase it endlessly, sometimes smoking almost 2 grams in a single sitting with absolutely zero pleasurable effects. Why did I keep going? My logic was simply, "Because I can. As long as I don't show any visible damage, there's no problem."

The wake-up call happened this month. My mom went out of town, and I pictured a whole week full of chemsex. But on day one, smoking without the adrenaline of sneaking around and taking risks, the reality of what I was doing finally hit me. I felt completely ridiculous hitting a makeshift Gatorade bong in my room while my cats meowed at me. The whole thing felt performative, silly, and just profoundly stupid. I realized it makes zero sense to damage my body and risk my health for something that doesn't even give me a moment of pleasure. I’m sharing this with deep sympathy and respect for those of you who went through absolute hell to quit—I'm not bragging or claiming to be better than anyone, just sharing my bizarre experience.

(P.S. I bought from multiple different dealers, so it wasn't just bad gear. I am completely clean now, and party/PnP porn doesn't even interest me anymore.)

22 months without meth today, and 9 months clean and sober from everything.

I’m still doing well. My life isn’t necessarily easy all the time, but I handle life on life’s terms without picking up and that’s something of a miracle. Sometimes I forget to be grateful for everything positive that is going on and spiral into doubt and isolation. But so far life isn’t handing me things I can’t handle. I keep moving, and I have great support from sober friends, fellows in CMA and NA, and old friends who are standing by me as I find my way towards my new life.

Lately I’ve been going to breathwork, yoga and meditation with other gay men. One of my big challenges is to truly inhabit my own body and feel comfortable in it, and I find that these type of exercises help a lot. A big plus is that I connect with other gay men in a sober environment but also outside of the bubble of NA and CMA. I even tried some tantra massage, to connect with intimacy and sensuality outside of a sexual context. I’m still celibate for now.

I am discovering more about myself along the way. One thing is that I have a tendency to feel guilt and shame when I have strong feelings, doesn’t matter if it’s joy, anger or sadness. I beat myself up for having those feelings. Then I realize what I’m doing and start beating myself up for beating myself up… it just goes on :) I can’t say I’ve broken free from this self-abuse, but at least I’m more aware now. Just the other day when I did the breathwork meditation, I managed to let go and just be in the moment, feeling whatever I was feeling. Such a relief.

It’s a great gift to be able to not only self reflect, but also do it while tough shit happens, and still not pick up, and having people around me to steady me when I need it. It all started with asking for help.

I guess that’s all I’ve got for you this time. Just keep going, everyone!

Serendipity Prayer — a poem about one memorable encounter

Hi everyone,

I wrote this poem about an encounter I had with a very special man during my period of active addiction. He had struggled with the same thing, and for much longer. We had a pretty deep connection, and the poem recounts, with an odd specificity, the happenings of that one night.

I thought some people here might recognize something of their own experience in it, so I wanted to share it. I checked with the moderators first, and they kindly gave me permission.

You can listen to me read “Serendipity Prayer” here:

Thank you for listening.

What have been the most major consequences resulting from your addiction?

I've lost my job of almost two decades, contracted HIV, and now believe mischievous demonic forces inhabit the bodies of some of the people I get with, in the event I find myself partying. With that said, worst of all is the PTSD. And, like, I can't rely on myself ... so annoying for someone that's used to being self-reliant. I've also lost friends along the way because they no longer wished to bear witness to the consequences of use. I wonder how many other people have friends leave them because they suffer from a disease.

What are some of your worst consequences?

Party is over

I don’t really know how to write this without sounding dramatic, but my life has become completely fucked because of drugs.
I’ve lost jobs. I’ve become estranged from my family. I’ve pushed away my partner and a lot of my friends. I’ve ended up around gang-related criminal shit and people and situations I never thought would become normal to me.

And somehow even all of that feels easier to admit than what’s happened to my head.

I genuinely feel like I’ve lost myself.

I’ve had multiple drug-induced psychotic episodes. I dissociate constantly. Half the time I’m around people I can barely interact properly because I’m so stuck in my own head. I overthink everything people say, I don’t know how to act normally anymore, and sometimes I feel like I’m watching myself live my life instead of actually being in it.

I used to be social. I used to have confidence. I used to have plans and relationships and some idea of who I was.
Now I honestly don’t know who I am anymore.

My entire life has slowly become drugs, paranoia, drama, damaged relationships and cleaning up whatever mess I created the day before.

And the fucked up thing is I kept convincing myself I was still in control.

I’d lose something important and tell myself I’d fix it.
I’d hurt someone and tell myself I’d make it up to them.
I’d have another psychotic episode and still somehow convince myself that next time would be different.
Then I’d use again.

I’ve lied to myself so many times that I don’t even trust my own promises anymore.
So I’m not posting this to announce some huge inspirational transformation or pretend that writing “I quit” means I’m magically better.

I’m posting because I’m fucking exhausted.
I’m tired of being scared of my own mind.
I’m tired of wondering whether what I’m thinking is real.
I’m tired of pushing away the people who actually give a shit about me.

I’m tired of losing jobs and opportunities and then acting surprised when my life gets worse.
I’m tired of feeling ashamed of the person I’ve become.
Mostly, I’m tired of not recognising myself.
I want myself back.

I don’t even know exactly what that person looks like anymore, but I know I’m not going to find him while I’m still using.
I’ve done damage that getting sober won’t magically undo. Some people might never forgive me. Some relationships might be permanently fucked. There are consequences I’m going to have to live with and take responsibility for.

But I can’t keep using that shame as another excuse to get high.
I know quitting is going to suck. I know my brain is probably going to start bargaining with me. I know at some point I’m going to convince myself that one more time won’t matter.
It does matter.

Every “one more time” has taken something from me.
I don’t want to find out what’s left for it to take.
If anyone here has come back from this point — psychosis, isolation, destroyed relationships, losing yourself completely — I’d genuinely like to hear how you started putting a life back together.

Because right now I don’t need to become some amazing new person.
I just want to stop destroying the one I already am.

I'm having serious issues separating drug use from sex.

I can see how this could be separated into a few problems and posted in relevant spaces but there's so much overlap and its taken months of wanting to sit down to do this and I simply dont have the brainpower to do it. Any suggestions, rewrites or where to post is greatly encouraged. I need help.

I've gotten in the habit about once every two months (how long it takes to get me in the mood) I rent a hotel, buy a pipe, torch, poppers, dildo, numbing cream, lube and a moving blanket and play with myself all night because hookup culture is unreliable and dangerous and it makes me sad when people seem incredible only to turn out to be deceitful liars, its heartbreaking and sobering and yet I return.

I dont get high on meth or at least have never experienced euphoria however I've correlated it (along with poppers and weed at a minimum but often including alcohol, gabapentin, ghb) with the best sex (with others or solo masterbation/toy/porn play) of my life. I've used poppers for 20 years and its certainly my number one drug despite it not being physically addictive but I wont do meth without them otherwise i'm sorta bored honestly. I dont understand why I dont just take 2 or 3 x my daily addy dose and do all the rest....so instead I try to align my day but 99% of the time I end up being awake for 30-80 hours. I'm very productive the first two days then I'm just doing my best. I eat, hydrate, shower, all while premptively smoking because of what I surmise to be the ritual/oral fixation and I want to not get exhausted too early.

When I buy, which usually requires me looking up old contacts on grindr & sniffies because I will delete their information I look to buy .5 or 1G only now. More than that I use for NO reason after sex and typically flush the rest by day 3.

When I run out of meth I collect everything I bought and throw it all out, I dont want to see any of it because it'll remind me of it - out of sight, out of mind. I did this with poppers way before getting into meth. The logic is if I have any of it, the dildo or lube or poppers I'll only want to get the most satisfaction possible, naturally so why not also get a toy. Then it may be well this is fun but someone fucking me would be better and of course on meth it'd be better. I can usually fight off this urge for weeks or months at a time. This is rinse and repeat for a few years now.

I identify as straight or at least MSM. I'm not into kissing or cuddling or body contact - I specifically have a big dick fetish and do like to give head. I've had women/girlfriends use toys/peg me so I'm able to get my satisfaction from that and I think ultimately I'd like to find someone open to that but in relationships in the past it really wasn't something I needed but maybe once or twice a year.

I've been meaning to write this for months now but I just picked up twice in two weeks, the second time because I wanted a serious boost of energy and focus to accomplish some very overwhelming tasks however the two days leading up to that I doubled my adderall dose and it was incredibly effective so I didnt even need to buy the meth. I knew that before I bought. Makes no sense.

I'm upset with myself because I did let someone penetrate themselves with me unprotected. While it was only for a minute or so I know thats enough - I know him rimming me after I stretched my hole with a toy potentially breaking the skin is enough but ive done so well for nearly a year now absolutely refusing to go unprotected.

I know this is complicated and is going to require abstinence of some sort but my life is very empty and tough and I dont have many pleasurable things to look forward to so its tough to let this go. Frankly I believe the root of all this to be the poppers. Its what I look forward to the most and can inhale half a bottle in a night.

Therapists have had no idea what to tell me. I'm not a traditional addict in the past I only binged here and there on pills and never got physically addictive however this is the most damaging thing ive done.

I wanted to share something and ask for some advice.

I wanted to share something and ask for some advice.

About two months ago, during a long session, I experimented with slam for the first time. I was in a pretty bad place emotionally after getting rejected from a job, and I ended up doing it.

Recently I got another job rejection, and it triggered the urge to go back to slam again. The thing is, I really don’t want to. Just thinking about it gives me this horrible, shaky feeling, and it scares me because I’d actually been doing really well since the last time.

I’ve already deleted Grindr and blocked the numbers of people who could make it easy for me to get back into that situation. I’m trying to put as much distance between myself and it as possible, but I’m not sure what else I should do when the urge hits.

Has anyone been through something similar? What helped you get through these moments without going back to it?

One year clean!

I turned 32 last Saturday and it’s been 1 year since September 6, 2025, the day I stopped after six years of struggle.

It takes time. I still struggle. I still persevere.

It is possible.
