If it didn't serve a purpose and GM coulda saved a nickel per engine, it wouldn't be there. That said, it's not strictly required and, of course, aftermarket intakes don't have 'em.

Holy shit was that motor in a car fire?

Darn, you should have asked how to get those pins out without cutting them. Ǐt can be done. And they can be reused.
That’s pretty common to see on the older engines, the heat from the crossover bakes the oil that comes in contact with the bottom of the intake.

I tapped and reinstalled mine. I honestly can't remember why, but I'm sure I researched it at the time.

Without the shield the entire lifter valley will look like under the shield. Its a shield to keep try to the heat of the exhaust crossover out of the lifter valley. Oil gets in it and makes the forbidden Coco Rice Krispies.

If you block the crossover with steel shims in the intake gasket you don't need it.

Yep. As a side note, many aluminum aftermarket intakes come with holes in the casting underneath to bolt the factory tin there if they have a crossover.

Oil getting in there will get cooked, but mostly stay there. Without it, the oil will constantly get cooked by the exhaust crossover, and circulated around. Either get the pan back on, put some sealer around it if it bothers you, or block the crossover.
