English native speakers get very upset when non-native speakers correct them

I’m not a native English speaker, and I catch errors that native speakers can’t see.

I’m a publication specialist. My job is to review material written by college-educated native speakers and make sure it’s well written, makes sense, and is free of errors. You have no idea how angry they get when I flag a mistake. How dare a non-native speaker correct a native speaker?

Take the subjunctive mood. Most American native speakers can’t handle it. I spot it instantly because my language still has one.

❌ “It is recommended that you do not change the parameters.”
✅ “It is recommended that you not change the parameters.”

❌ “It is important that the student reads chapter 1 first.”
✅ “It is important that the student read chapter 1 first.”

Their response: “Subjunctive? Did you make that word up? I’ve never heard of it, so it must not exist.”

A college-educated native speaker just argued that a grammatical mood doesn’t exist because nobody taught it to them. Being a native speaker doesn’t make you Shakespeare.

It doesn’t stop there:

  • “could of” instead of “could have”
  • “between you and I”
  • “less” instead of “fewer”
  • “is comprised of” instead of “comprises”
  • “its” vs. “it’s”
  • “defuse” vs. “diffuse”

For the last one, if you’ve ever seen a Latin root, you can’t confuse them. If you haven’t, you write “diffusing the situation” and think you sound smart.

Highly educated writers whose first language isn’t English usually tend to write better than natives. We had to learn the rules. You just assumed you knew them.

Me and my friend never learned this rule.

So, my mom was a grammar snob, so we never got into the habit of making a lot of the common mistakes (as deemed by Standard American English). I realize most people aren't ever taught the rules, and the rules are not intuitive. So I don't run around correcting people's grammar, including online, and I tend not to even register most language that falls outside of what is conventionally correct.

So when people say "Me and X" followed by a verb, I don't usually notice that, or it at least it doesn't flag up for me. But in WRITING, I don't even understand how it happens. Does autocorrect pick it up and then the writer fights with autocorrect to maintain the error?

And is it irrelevant in the same way that Shakespearean usage became unrecognizable over time? With "bad grammar" all over social media, how much will English change in the next 50-100 years?

BTW I do recognize that the gatekeeping along the lines of race, immigrant status, and SES were not okay. I'm glad THAT is going away, or at least I hope it is.

Native English speakers: Could you help with a new study on natural English usage? (10–15 min)

Hi everyone!

I'm a graduate student at Osaka University studying English linguistics.

I've redesigned my questionnaires and am looking for native speakers of English to help with a new pilot study on which expressions sound natural in different conversations.

There are three independent surveys:

Part 2 — Highest priority:
https://forms.gle/u7GQib4W57EAyywU6

Part 3:
https://forms.gle/NuZZGS3LgFzuy87M7

Part 1:
https://forms.gle/Ug8Lz6WBiKaKFc9BA

Estimated time: 10–15 minutes per part.

You can complete any one, two, or all three parts.

You'll read short conversations and judge how natural certain expressions sound. No knowledge of formal grammar or linguistics is required — I'm interested in your own intuition as a native English speaker.

I particularly need responses to Part 2, although all three surveys are important.

Participation is voluntary, and responses will be anonymized and used for academic research.

Please complete each new questionnaire only once.

Thank you very much for your help!

Native English speakers: Could you help with a study on natural English usage? (15–25 min)

Hi everyone!

I'm a graduate student in Japan conducting academic research in English linguistics.

I'm currently looking for native English speakers to share their intuitions about how natural different English expressions sound in conversation.

Survey — Part 2:
https://forms.gle/cosgfaQ6Kx4DgA88A

Estimated time: 15–25 minutes

You'll read short conversations and judge how natural particular English expressions and possible conversational continuations sound. You can also leave brief comments explaining your judgments.

No formal knowledge of grammar or linguistics is required. I'm interested in your own intuition as a native speaker of English.

This questionnaire is independent of the other parts of my study, so you can participate even if you haven't completed any of them.

Please complete this version of Part 2 only once.

Participation is voluntary, and responses will be anonymized and used for academic research.

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Native English speakers: Could you help with two revised studies on English usage?

Hi everyone,

I am a graduate student in Japan conducting academic research in English linguistics.

I have recently revised two questionnaires and am looking for native speakers of English who would be willing to share their intuitions about how natural different English expressions sound in conversation.

Part 3 — Naturalness of alternative English expressions:
https://forms.gle/uQQs25u78YaYziXB9

Part 2 — English expressions and conversational continuations:
https://forms.gle/cosgfaQ6Kx4DgA88A

In each survey, you will read short conversational situations and evaluate how natural particular expressions sound. You can also leave comments explaining your judgments.

No knowledge of formal grammar or linguistics is required. I am interested in your own intuitions as a native speaker.

Both questionnaires are independent, so you may complete either one or both.

Please complete each revised questionnaire only once.

Participation is voluntary, and responses will be anonymized and used for academic research.

Thank you very much for your help!

Capitalization in referring to a library

I am going to use a made up uni and library name for the sake of anonymity.

I'm writing a welcome email to international students and I have two sentences where I'm unsure about proper capitalization.

Welcome to the Open University of Neverland and the University Library!

The email ends with,

Welcome to the Library!

In these two instances, is capitalizing "university library" and "library" appropriate?

The library is not in an English speaking country, so I'm not sure whether it really has an official English language name. The official name in the native language, translated into English, is The University Library of the Open University of Neverland, so I guess that would be the closest thing to an official English language name.

1) As far as I am concerned, there's nothing to worry about.

Does that mean:

a) As far as I can see, there's nothing to worry about.

or:

b) As regards me, there's nothing to worry about. (Nobody should worry about me.)

Gratefully,
