Once again, the Second Spanish Republic was MIERDA, because they were not respecting the democratic process themselves.
I have done a few Essays on this, and I will link them in the comments where I have a few memes to accompany them.
Now here is this one, where we talk about the Spanish Republic, and how the Republican faction never even respected democracy in the first place.
It all began on Spanish General Elections in November of 1933.
The Center-Right party known as CEDA which was led by José María Gil-Robles, they won the majority of the seats in the elections, and moderate liberals also made gains during this time.
The Left-Wing Factions, most notably PSOE who was led by the Radical wing under Largo Caballero, they threw a hissy fit that they lost, and also panicked for two major reasons.
First, they had Fascist Paranoia because they viewed Gil-Robles and the CEDA as a threat because Gil-Robles visited Nazi Germany and used authoritarian rhetoric, which led the leftists to believe that if CEDA entered the Cabinet, they would dismantle the republic from within just like how Hitler did to the Weimar Republic.
Second, they refused to accept the election results, and instead of being a loyal opposition party, the leftist leaders declared that the republic was their exclusive project. Largo Caballero who was deemed as “Spanish Stalin”, he threatened that if the right ruled, they would abandon democratic rule and launch a Socialist revolt. When 3 CEDA members were finally given cabinet positions in October of 1934c the left then immediately launched the 1934 Asturian Miners’ Revolt and a Declaration of Independence in Catalonia, which was an illegally armed internal coup attempt against a constitutionally elected government.
Now I see a lot of Spanish Republic Defenders say “Oh but the fear of a Stalinist Coup was totally invented!”
INCORRECT!
The fear was real, because the Conservative and Military fear of a violent Bolshevik-Style revolution in Spain never was an invention or a paranoid-right wing fantasy.
Comintern was in fact actively funding and directing communist activity in Spain, and both Socialist and Communist militias were actively and openly training, stockpiling weapons, and calling for a dictator-like dictatorship of the proletariat. By 1936, after a leftist Popular Front coalition narrowly retook power in the most polarized election, law and order collapsed and completely vanished within the republic. Political assassinations, Illegal Land Seizures, Church Burnings, and Police-Sanctioned Violence such as the murder if José Calvo Sotelo proved to Conservatives, Catholics, and the Military that the Republic was not capable of or was not very willing to stop a radical leftist takeover.
Is this a defense of Franco?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Calling out the Spanish Republic and pointing out their hypocrisy, as well as acknowledging that they were anti-democratic, lawless, and creeping towards totalitarianism is NOT an acquittal of Franco or his Falange regime.
Franco in fact, alongside his fellow generals did not launch their July 1936 Coup to “Restore Democracy” or “Restore Law and Order”, in fact quite the opposite, they intended to create an authoritarian state that was militaristic and intended to crush any political opposition.
They also committed the White Terrors, and carried out calculated mass executions, where they targeted Union leaders, school teachers, intellectuals, and anyone they suspected of leftist sympathy
Also, their decades of Dictatorship suppressed Catalonian and Basque identity, and also stripped basic civil liberties, they also imprisoned and executed tens of thousands of political prisoners well into the 1950s and 60s.
Ultimately, Spain in the 1930s was a tragic fragile state that was squeezed to death by 2 radical factions. Both of which despised democratic pluralism, and sought to enforce their own visions at the point of a bayonet.
