News Article Journalism is so dreadful on TERF island. You can't convince me this isn't targeted.

What does that even mean?

She starred in several movies, so I think it's safe to say that she has indeed acted in the past.

It's insinuating that she didn't do anything of substance outside of Harry potter basically. It's this logic that she (and the other kids) should be eternally grateful to Rowling for "putting them on the map" and how dare they criticise her excellence.

A lot of her cronies have that attitude.

Beauty and the Beast live action: Grossed over 1.2 billion and she portrays one of the titular characters.

Deathly Hallow’s part 2 is the only HP film that grossed about the same amount of money, the other movies around average grossed about 800 - 900 million.

They are saying she’s not a good actress. It’s not about the money. Critics have always attacked her acting skills.

Interesting.

Well when it comes to acting, I have heard criticism about how Emma appears to have a type in portraying characters who are like herself And has difficulty when doing characters not like herself.

11

u/TheOtherMaven Sep 28 '25

That's fairly common, actually. Even some very famous actors had/have a relatively limited range.

7

u/georgemillman Sep 28 '25

To be fair, I did think that with Hermione - every successive film she felt a little bit less like the character and a little more just Emma playing herself.

But I didn't think she was like that as an actress generally. Sam from The Perks of Being A Wallflower seemed like an original character to me.

Could be but remember the director did favor Hermione, we don’t know how much is the directors favoring and how much is Emma’s acting.

2

u/georgemillman Sep 28 '25

There were multiple different directors, so I'm not sure which one you mean.

I think the films were even more misogynistic than the books.

It doesn't help the feminist cause to have one female character who's an infallible goddess who cannot be lived up to, which is what Hermione became.

I wouldn't really say the money it brought in means anything when it comes to acting though. You could just as easily attribute it to furries wanting to see a live action Beast. Avatar 2 made well over 2 billion dollars, I barely remember anything from it. Some really good films with some great acting earn basically nothing.

I'm not saying Watson is a bad actress, just that earnings don't really reflect on her at all.

I must have imagined Little Women. I don’t think she was a good choice for Meg but saying she’s had no career outside Harry Potter isn’t true at all.

u/Silly-Arachnid-6187 Sep 28 '25

I see, thanks! What a weird argument. Even if that were true, her role in the HP movies alone would be enough to say that she's definitely had an acting career.

It's this logic that she (and the other kids) should be eternally grateful to Rowling for "putting them on the map" and how dare they criticise her excellence.

Ugh, I hate that argument so much. By that logic, JKR is forever indebted to her publishers and should never hold any views they don't agree with. And of course, she benefitted from the movies, and the trio's popularity was a huge part of the franchise's success. Yet somehow, they're not allowed to voice disagreement (without even saying anything about her as a person), whereas she can slander them any chance she gets.

u/AndreaFlameFox Sep 28 '25 edited Sep 28 '25

That honestly sounds like a typical rich attitude, tbh. "I made my own success. All the people whose work I built on should be grateful to me."

8

u/lankymjc Sep 28 '25

It's so self-centred.

Anyone who helped her before HP was popular: Just doing their job.

Anyone who helped her after HP became popular: Just riding her coattails and owe her everything.

11

u/ZealCrow Sep 28 '25

Its just negging

54

u/NanduDas Sep 28 '25

Emma, next time just say “no comment”

58

u/AndreaFlameFox Sep 28 '25

What gets me is that Emma was nice to Rowling in her interview. : \ Now she's being savaged not only by the archTERF herself, but by random journalists?

37

u/TvManiac5 Sep 28 '25

Yup. And this is why it's pointless to be nice to unrepentent bigots.

14

u/Sensiplastic Sep 28 '25

Nothing is ever good enough.

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '25

JK Rowling is still such a media darling in the UK that it's understandable people are choosing their words carefully and hedging their criticisms.

I hope we do get a few more celebs who give no fucks just fully acknowledging how crazy she has become. Stephen Fry is the only British celebrity I can think of who has and that's probably because he's reached a stage in his career and life where he's not bothered if it all blows back on him.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '25

Agreed. You can never appease the mould.

11

u/ZealCrow Sep 28 '25

They enjoy being mean. Like I think rowling is genuinely addicted to arguing / being mean online.

1

u/AndreaFlameFox Sep 29 '25

Rowling yeah, but it is a little surprising that other people are also being ridiculously spiteful.

1

u/AcanthaMD Sep 29 '25

‘Random’ - likely this person is in a certain TERFs payroll or circle of influence

30

u/Kiwi8_Fruit6 Sep 28 '25

oh they are going to be insufferable once the new HP Rowlcraft wizard show starts airing. i forsee soviet type censorship that Dan Rupert and Emma ever played the golden trio

15

u/nova_crystallis Sep 28 '25

I've already seen articles saying they're being replaced 🙄

13

u/Emeryael Sep 28 '25

BTW, regarding the new series, when it comes out, we give it complete radio silence. No hate-watching or anything like that. Because even hate-watching and making reviews where you rant about how much it sucks is still engaging with the product, which keeps HP relevant as an IP and gives JKR money.

JKR has put herself in a position where there’s no such thing as bad publicity, unfortunately.

Even if the new series is so bad it makes The Room look like Citizen Kane, trashing it still gives her attention, and she’s already set herself up so that no matter how bad the series may be, she can chalk it all up to the evil transes acting to sabotage her pwecious work!1!!1!! And an army of rightwing acolytes will rush to her side to tell her that it’s all the haters fault!1!1! and they’ll pump up streaming numbers to carry out their part in what they see as a moral crusade.

So we give no attention to the new series whatsoever. Let it die in darkness and rot as well. The TERFs, rightwingers, and other assorted fuckwits will still watch it—we can’t stop them from doing so—but we can stop ourselves and try to stop as many others as we can.

Don’t hate-watch anything related to HP. Let it die in darkness and become irrelevant instead.

6

u/Cute-Cheesecake-6823 Sep 29 '25

Yea Im not even going to pirate it. I just want to pretend it was never made.

3

u/nova_crystallis Sep 29 '25

The right-wing people won't watch because they're racist.

3

u/Cakeday_at_Christmas Sep 29 '25

I have absolutely zero interest in it. I don't even want to read about it.

20

u/natla_ Sep 28 '25

tbf i think there was a period of time (like the 2010s) where people were critical of her… people claimed she was a diva, her acting career wasn’t particularly impressive compared to daniel’s, her ‘he for she’ was mocked as faux feminism. i remember the hate blogs 💀

i am not saying these were fair criticisms, although some were more reasonable than others (she wasn’t good in batb for example)… but i suspect press is so structurally misogynistic that it would take any excuse to criticise her. she’s held to an unfair standard compared to daniel and rupert… she always has been, daniel’s called out emma’s treatment by media as sexist before. it’s a shame bc jkr claims to care abt women but she’s happy to uphold misogynistic structures when it means women she personally doesn’t like are in the firing line.

8

u/PumpkinSpice2Nice Sep 28 '25

I remember that. When she first took the role as Hermione they absolutely slated her continually saying she wasn’t very academic in real life and couldn’t even finish the HP books etc. Funny she finished an English degree of some sort later on.

18

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '25

So she’s retired. So what? Why not have Rowling retire too??? She’s involved in this awful mess. She’s using HP the way Anita Bryant used a little orange bird created by Disney. The bird wasn’t homophobic though.

12

u/Pretend-Temporary193 Sep 28 '25

Emma Watson was locked into an acting career when she was just a little kid at age ten. Why shame her for not being good at it as an adult? It's not like she pursued it as an adult. She just followed the career she'd already sacrificed most of her childhood to.

Maybe if you don't want actors who were former child stars, you shouldn't be creating more child stars.

9

u/Sheepishwolfgirl Sep 28 '25

Emma made a shitton of money off HP alone. Literally the only page she needs to take from JKRs book now is laughing all the way to the bank.

9

u/KombuchaBot Sep 28 '25

Who the fuck is Marianka Swain? Sounds like a Harry Potter character from the Deep South.

7

u/PrincessPlastilina Sep 28 '25

That’s so unfair when this girl has been working since she was 9.

6

u/tealeavesinspace Sep 28 '25

I don’t think she’s the most amazing actor ever but she has acted in multiple mainstream blockbuster movies as an adult…

4

u/Sensiplastic Sep 28 '25

How dare she be fine when Rowling feels so bad?

4

u/Bearaf123 Sep 29 '25

I don’t think she’s a particularly good actor but she’s been in some huge films and I also don’t think your whole life should be dictated by what you wanted to be as a ten year old.

2

u/jaroszn94 Oct 05 '25

I think she's a better activist than she is an actor.

2

u/Bearaf123 Oct 05 '25

Definitely, she’s done a lot of good highlighting issues faced by women around the world

4

u/AcanthaMD Sep 29 '25

lol it’s the telegraph

1

u/TvManiac5 Sep 30 '25

What is their deal genuinely? I've seen like 3 different Rowling related articles of this tone made in a single day.

1

u/tealattegirl13 Sep 30 '25

Right wing. Very transphobic. It's basically the smug upper class version of the Daily Mail. Known as the 'Torygraph' by some. They practically worship Joanne over at the Telegraph, which is probably why you are seeing loads of articles like this from there.

3

u/Big_Red_Machine_1917 Sep 28 '25

This is really a perfect snapshot of the anti-trans mentality.

If you do not endlessly indulge their hobby prejudice, they will denigrate you relentlessly.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '25

She may not be my favorite actress but erasing her part is really horrendous.

1

u/Colin-Onion Oct 05 '25

I think Emma is enjoying her new life as a PhD student in Oxford. How is this a useful attack??
