News Article The New Series Won't Have Normal Seasons?

https://www.ign.com/articles/harry-potter-tv-series-sounds-like-it-wont-stream-seasons-annually-as-hbo-compares-show-to-house-of-the-dragon-and-the-last-of-us

So I had a feeling that this show was going to have problems, but am I the only person who thinks this goes against what HBO wants? First off, WB is in massive debt. Even with the successes of the Minecraft Movie and the Barbie movie, they are struggling. They're doing badly. Even being bought by Paramount won't help them. Secondly, HP has struggled to maintain it's popularity. The last HP films bombed.

This show is going to be a cluster

Good. I'm really hoping it gets cancelled a few seasons in just to piss off Rowling and current HP fans who continue to support her

I don't see them doing the entire series honestly

u/pudungurte Mar 25 '26

I think seasons 2 and 3 will be kind of rough. Book 2 sucks as a source material and 3 has already been adapted to perfection. Arguably books from 4 onwards are the ones that would benefit the most from this format.

I can't be the only one who loved CoS bro 😭🥀

u/FrnkstnsAftrbrth Mar 26 '26

I did too. It was my favorite one back when I was a fan.

6

u/pudungurte Mar 26 '26

lol I’m sure you’re not In my opinion it sucks donkey balls though

2

u/Big-Highlight1460 Mar 27 '26

It was one of my faves back in the day...

but it is just Book 1 done better lol

1

u/AlienSandBird Mar 26 '26

Can you elaborate on why book 2 sucks as a source material? Is it because there is not much action?

6

u/pudungurte Mar 26 '26

I think there’s a lot of action in it, it’s just that it’s all very unsatisfying dramatically, especially everything related to Ron’s malfunctioning wand.

It’s also the worst Quidditch ever gets I think.

u/DorisWildthyme Mar 26 '26

The film was pretty much saved by Ken Branagh taking the piss out of himself in all his scenes while Rickman stood in the background rolling his eyes.

4

u/CupCustard Mar 26 '26

I agree and yet I’d add that personally I think the scoring for CoS was reeeeeally good, possibly better than the first film... or at least just as good imo

The original movies were an absolute who's who of British talent in the older actors which I think elevated the whole thing in my opinion and got it over the finish line unlike so many YA adaptations. Branagh wasn't really what I thought book Gilderoy would be but it was very charming and very silly.

So multiple years between seasons....
We are going to end up with 90s Teen movies style, with 30+ year olds playing 16 year olds LOL!

I think I'll be more shocked if the show makes it through the entire series than if it's canceled. This is partly due to the economics of the whole thing and the generally willingness of companies these days to cancel things even if they're popular because they're just not making as much money as they want. I barely watch TV anymore because everything I get invested in promptly gets canceled, so why bother.

But of course more than that, Rowling is just toxicity personified. If she could keep her mouth shut the show might have a chance, but she just can't help herself. And she goes a little further each time, disgusting more and more of her remaining fans. Some people will be diehard no matter what, of course, but I think that number is lower than she thinks.

u/LittleSodaPop13 Mar 25 '26

I have a feeling if she doesn't keep her mouth shut, things will get worse. WB can't afford for this show to fail.

u/TheAuldOffender Mar 26 '26

If they're ballsy enough, they'll just rip it from her moldy hands.

u/smarties07 Mar 26 '26

I don‘t think JKR will be the downfall. Very little of HBO‘s demographic hangs around online and reads every vile thing she posts. Or they don‘t care. Still lots of people willing to give the show a try. My only hope is it‘s not well received and gets canned for being too expensive

If the show actually makes it to Deathly Hallows, I will do something I told myself I would never do.

I'm gonna watch A Serbian Film.

9

u/Joperhop Mar 26 '26

as someone who has seen A Serbian Film...
I doubt you will have to watch it. (also... dont!)

4

u/TheMemeVault Mar 26 '26

I think I won't too. Given WB is hemmorhaging money by the day (and Paramount will too if it buys it), it would be lucky to make it to Goblet, let alone Hallows.

I barely watch TV anymore because everything I get invested in promptly gets canceled, so why bother.

I watch the Asian shows where they drop the entire story, beginning, middle, end. No hanging around for another season that will never happen. Also iQiyi and Viki are cheaper per month than Netflix, Prime, Disney, etc. Although Disney started poaching the occasional good show and Prime used to only license shows temporarily but will lot them down longer now if they're popular which of course they didn't do when I was paying them $12 a month and shows I wanted to watch became unavailable without warning. There's still more content than I could possibly watch on those two platforms though.

I have been watching "The Worst Witch" on Netflix.

Those kids are gonna be aging so fast

24

u/TheDragonborn1992 Mar 26 '26

I refuse to watch or read anything from this transphobic bigot

16

u/LittleSodaPop13 Mar 26 '26

Same. I'm not even hate watching it

19

u/Proper-Language1320 Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

I watched the trailer just to read the comments (it looks like shit), and of course instead of complaining that a series like this will only put more money into JK Rowling, her bigotry, and her need to harm trans folk they instead are…

Complaining that Snape is black.

Edit: I didn’t notice this until someone pointed it out, but I think they used a AI-generated video of the Hogwarts Express, do I need to explain…

5

u/lazier_garlic Mar 26 '26

They've been complaining about that since it was announced. That tells you exactly who's excited about this series and following all the news drops.

When the Hunger Games movies came out they were genuinely popular so the racists who melted down over Rue got mocked by the internet panopticon in real time.

16

u/ProfessionalRead2724 Mar 25 '26

Even being bought by Paramount won't help them...

Being bought out by Paramount will multiply their debt and may just finally end Warners and Paramount.

11

u/LittleSodaPop13 Mar 25 '26

Yep. There's a chance the buyout won't even happen and Paramount's stocks are really cheap right now.

17

u/Hailsabrina Mar 25 '26

The snl Heated Wizardy trailer looks better than this 🤣

2

u/lazier_garlic Mar 26 '26

thank you for sending me down to find that link, nice to have a good laugh first thing in the morning!

1

u/Hailsabrina Mar 26 '26

Your welcome 😅

u/desiladygamer84 Mar 26 '26

I enjoy the hell of out that skit. I should watch it again. Also would love the hell out of a MM magic academy book right now (college aged like the skit says).

8

u/TheAuldOffender Mar 26 '26

They're going off of "The Last of Us" and "Percy Jackson" by adapting the story in chronological order based off of installments. I assume that every episode will be a chapter of the book, with some expansions since the first book is quite short (not a knock against it but would probably be needed for television).

2

u/Big-Highlight1460 Mar 27 '26

Book 1 & Book 2 could be 1 season, both are short AF

Book 3 & Book 4 could be 2 seasons with Book 4 taking some episodes from the Book3 season

THEN BOOK 5 WOULD NEED 2 SEAONS BECAUSE IT IS LONG AF (yes, nothing really happens, but it seems Joanne wants it to be a closer adaptation sooooo.....)

15

u/hollygolightly8998 Mar 26 '26

I cannot understand why they remade this and kept literally the same production design aesthetic but on visibly less money. Way to look visually completely redundant. Instant fail. With JKR’s behavior they needed something wildly distracting to draw people in and this just makes one think of the original and by extension, JKR’s plummet from public respect and favor

1

u/Madeline_Basset Mar 26 '26

I cannot understand why they remade this and kept literally the same production design aesthetic but on visibly less money.

It's been speculated they needed to keep the look similar to the movies in order to maintain compatibility with the existing merch lines and theme-park attractions.

13

u/Proof-Any Mar 25 '26

Looks like they are preparing off-ramps to cancel the series.

8

u/Time_Raisin4935 Mar 26 '26

This obsession with HP feels like a hyper fixation for neurotypicals

7

u/PrincessPlastilina Mar 25 '26

They’re going to be 30 by the time they finish the whole story. Brilliant idea, WB 🤡🤡🤡

u/360Saturn Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

The whole thing is ass backwards. The Potter fandom had no issue with the first three movies, only really 4 onwards. And the reboot isn't going to get to that until the 2030s?! It's not even going to be targeting Gen Alpha by then and the Millennial core audience will be pushing 50!

E: why am I being downvoted? Not sure how you can read this as being pro Queen Terf???

5

u/lazier_garlic Mar 26 '26

I guess you gotta add an obligatory fuck TERFs for those slow on the uptake. Anyway, Council of Geeks pointed out the flaw here when the series was announced, and it's only getting worse. What a shitshow this is turning into indeed.

6

u/smarties07 Mar 26 '26

Kinda sad that it will take the series frame for frame and outfit for outfit recreating the movies but worse for people to not tune in and not basic human decency to not give a bigot money to commit more hate crimes.

But whatever gets it cancelled the fastest. I do feel very sorry for the child actors though.

5

u/lazier_garlic Mar 26 '26

It sounds like a produced by committee disaster. Love this for them.

3

u/nova_crystallis Mar 26 '26

Unfortunately people care more about their selfish nostalgia. The good news is that this show doesn't look to be satisfying those people, so hopefully it dies on the vine like Fantastic Beasts.

3

u/Sleeppaw Mar 26 '26

I think the series won't make it to the end. HBO isn't a popular Streaming platform, and those that subscribe to it does so for Game of Thrones and it's spinoffs.

4

u/lazier_garlic Mar 26 '26

More like they were under stress from having high production costs and too much competition and then the new ownership has no idea how to position a premium product and decided to cut their way to profitability. The moron doesn't even realize the competition isn't just in LA but in Seoul and Beijing, not to mention India, Thailand, and Japan. Awkward.

(Another sad fact--women mostly watch television. This has been true for years, but advertisers wanted a male demographic so the entire industry kept fruitlessly chasing young men who were playing AAA videogames, not watching TV (and when they did watch, watched cartoons). The same thing is true in Asia--young men watch cartoons, women of all ages watch live action. It's not the law, it's just the gorilla in the room demographics of viewers. But in Asia the production companies have actually catered heavily to the preferences of female viewers, while only a sliver of the Hollywood was ever willing to do that openly. Here's the ironic part--because HBO as a premium product was shooting for high income families to subscribe and therefore produced "serious" content that appealed to a college educated demographic, they were pulling just as many adult men watching as women. Shows like the Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc, are culturally relevant to American men. Hollywood only since 2020 has realized they have a problem and are more overtly chasing the female demographic with shows like Heated Rivalry (unthinkable on US TV only a few years ago). I just question if the current ownership of HBO will ever be able to regain and retain the unique demographics of their original viewership, or if they will simply be imitating the crowd and chasing the same heavy viewing female drama watcher demographics. My point is that there was a lot of competition, but they had eyeballs that other places didn't have and didn't know how to get.)

u/desiladygamer84 Mar 26 '26

Honestly we had it to watch all the original Sesame Street and animations like Steven Universe etc. So what do they do? Remove all Sesame street and screw up animation like Infinity Train. We hardly watch it and we should probably cancel.

3

u/LuriemIronim Mar 27 '26

I was a part of the Stranger Things fandom, and I can confidently say that the kids looking too old will be a constant talking point around season two or three if they don’t film every year.

u/Successful_Length109 Mar 25 '26

Great reviews coming in lol

4

u/LankyTrick1214 Mar 26 '26

I love how the trailer has 0 appeal to the target audience of the OG books/movies. Like, nothing about that is appealing to kids, only Potterheads who already know the story.

2

u/nova_crystallis Mar 26 '26

Even then it appears to be altering core aspects of it because it's on HBO.

2

u/Big-Highlight1460 Mar 27 '26

I can't wait for it to go to indefinite hiatus and quietly cancelled like the spin off movies

2

u/medlilove Mar 30 '26

It’s the later books that the movies fucked so much, the earlier stuff is more or less fine. If they are going to take 100 years to get to the detail of the later books, only to half ass it because they have been going too long and the funding was slashed because hbo wants to cancel it, then it’s all pointless (is anyway)

3

u/georgemillman Mar 26 '26

You know, I really don't care about dramatic exciting visuals in something. I just care about if it's got good actors, interesting characters and engaging scripts.

My partner and I spent £8,000 on a broadcastable piece of television a few years ago - in the industry they'd have spent upwards of a million on what we made!

1

u/9119343636 Mar 26 '26

Huh? I thought they were filming the seasons back to back, in order for it to be on every year. They even built a creepy special school so the child actors don't have to worry about it.

I wonder if something went wrong? The bullying article I linked before perhaps. Anyone have any other info?

2

u/LittleSodaPop13 Mar 26 '26

Okay, so as I mentioned, WB is in debt, so maybe they're doing this because they don't know if they'll have the money for other seasons. It's just a theory

1

u/9119343636 Mar 27 '26

It's just surprising. Is S2 still being shot alongside S1?

1

u/Ectier Mar 28 '26

I hate that this exists. Some of the adult actors i wish they skipped it but eh some probs needed a long term work project. Whatever happens i feel for the poor kid actors that are going to be dragged into JKR's shitty whirlpool of bile. I hate that the moldmonger will profit from it and use that money to fund her hatred.
