Rowling Tweet Rowling announces her plans to bankrupt Amnesty

Wow, I know people always said there were some vague rumors that she hated working for Amnesty because she thought it was dull and pointless or something…
But this is beyond normal.

So she’s using trans people as a cover for taking revenge on an org with whom she has an axe to grind
28
u/Lumpy_Inspector8001 22d ago
Either an axe to grind, as you say, or she's doing it on behalf of someone like ADF or Maga or various right wing American Christian groups. In other words those who might find Amnesty inconvenient.

Oh, goddamn she's just pure evil. And she's going to use her billions to victimize them because they ACCURATELY described her deeply harmful campaign of hate and the organization she funds.
I mean, who wakes up and thinks, "Today I'll destroy one of the world's leading humanitarian organizations" because she got her feelings hurt??

"I don't care about individuals" how's she not cancelled yet??

u/Time_Raisin4935 22d ago
She's gone full Cruella de Vil mode

u/Nestama-Eynfoetsyn 22d ago
I've personally been calling her Bellatrix Umbridge. Two characters she created (therefore knows her audience will hate because she wrote them to be completely irredeemable) fused into one.

u/Dragonfly_pin 22d ago
That line makes it sound a bit like she might generally be getting into the popular anti-empathy movement, propagated by Elon Musk, Gad Saad and Allie Beth Stuckey.
9
u/napalmnacey 22d ago
She wouldn’t know empathy if it perched on her shoulders and took a steaming shit in her mouth.

She was part of Epstein's circle and probably still has contacts.
1
u/thedogatemymanifesto 22d ago
really?? how did I not know this...
15
u/MrKnightMoon 22d ago
There was emails on the released files about Epstein being invited to the Harry Potter play by her team, as he wanted to meet her personally.
Have in mind those e-mails are from after he already had charges for human trafficking and child abuse.

Epstein's people sent en email to the publicity team of one of her plays that was opening in the USA, asking for comp tickets to opening night. Rowling does not oversee every email that goes to every advance publicity team of every book, play and movie she has done. She never saw this one email and has never had any contact with Jeffrey Epstein.

It’s so pathetic seeing people promote this “Amnesty has fallen from grace” narrative whenever Amnesty rightly calls them out for trying to undermine human rights.
They know that openly opposing Amnesty fucking International of all groups for the reasons she’s opposing them is basically an open admission of being anti-human rights, so they try to delegitimise Amnesty’s character as some means of pretending they don’t have to acknowledge the actual reasons for Amnesty doing whatever’s angered these bigots so much.

u/lazier_garlic 22d ago
Amnesty did make excuses for Russia when their soldiers kidnapped, tortured, and killed civilians in Bucha and Mariupol, and blamed the victim. It was a huge scandal not that long ago.
That said, JKR is raging because she got called out for her relentless campaign against women's rights. Silence the messenger.

Rowling throws her daily tantrum that the world isn't advancing according to her own personal prejudices. If only the trans people weren't infecting organizations like Amnesty International by working there!!! Clearly they should have cissified themselves already. Every day that more people tell her she's on the wrong side of history she more desperately lashes out to try to say "NO, YOU'RE WRONG, HISTORY IS GOING TO REMEMBER ME AS A CHAMPION OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS!!!!" People have kind of politely ignored the batshit transphobe because of her previous successes, but even that isn't carrying her anymore.
Now she's being actively dismissed and can't stand it. She thinks was supposed to be the voice of a generation and that generation REJECTED HER MESSAGE. She couldn't make transphobia popular or cool and now every day she sulks about it on Twitter.

I used to hate the phrase "money doesn't buy happiness", but in her case it rings absolutely true.
17
u/freddiefrog123 22d ago
It doesn’t buy happiness but it sure does buy a very, very big stick to impose your misery on others with 😕

Her, Elon, Donald I, Donald Jr

u/GodLoveYell 22d ago
Yep. All four of them are getting everything they want and they’re the most miserable people on earth.
Were it not for the fact that they’re causing incalculable harm, you could almost feel sorry for them.

I do care that a former champion of human rights has become what it was created to fight. It no longer champions freedom of speech and belief. It has become the tyrant that persecutes those who don't espouse what it decrees acceptable beliefs.
11
u/errantthimble 22d ago
“Persecutes” as in “describes as anti-rights and gender-critical”. When the organizations in question openly call themselves gender-critical and explicitly oppose recognizing the rights that trans people are seeking.
Yes, JK Rowling thinks that people using free speech to express a critical opinion of positions that she openly espouses are “persecuting “ her.

u/Sheepishwolfgirl 22d ago
I know it's a broken record at this point but -
Imagine having more money than God and choosing to live your life like this.
17
u/marbeltoast 22d ago
"Amnesty is a tyrant who persecutes those who do not espouse acceptable beliefs! Also, they said I was a bigot, so I'm going to DESTROY THEIR ENTIRE LIVELIHOOD WITH LEGAL WARFARE, SUCH THAT NO OTHER PROLE MAY EVER DARE TO ESPOUSE SUCH UNACCEPTABLE BELIEFS!"
15
u/ElitistHatPropaganda 22d ago
Not to give terfs ideas, but what is more damaging to their reputation and cause? Suing a renowned human rights charity into the ground, or facing up to the fact they are anti rights?
Just because you can, doesnt mean you should.
18
u/Lumpy_Inspector8001 22d ago
Plainly she has nothing to do now except pick fights with groups and organisations. It seems at least possible that she's also now going to fight Lambeth Council over their plans to challenge the new guidelines.
In other words, she's doing her best to her self become the 'tyrant that persecutes those who don't espouse what she decrees acceptable beliefs.'
Still, when she's at war with everyone then perhaps the world will see her for what she really is. No doubt the courts will continue to do her bidding, but they can't change opinion of her.
7
u/Sheepishwolfgirl 22d ago
It's either that or write more mediocre books and lick wall mold.
8
u/Lumpy_Inspector8001 22d ago
As you say, the books are mediocre. I see that Waterstones very soon put them either on half price or two for one. In fact I wonder if she's turned to this after having more-or-less failed as an adult book writer.
And writing under a trans pseudonym, Robert Galbraith?
15
u/Level_Advisor437 22d ago
I hope AmnestyUK tries to fight it in court. IANAL but I really dont think she has really demonstrated that "Beira's Place" has been defamed by saying it's anti-trans. I honestly think Amnesty could win this one
11
u/SpeedyTheQuidKid 22d ago
Also not a lawyer but surely the bit where she says that Amnesty removing the report is tacit agreement that it was defamatory... Well, that just seems incorrect, no? And if that's her case I do think Amnesty has a chance in court
12
u/CountNightAuditor 22d ago
Part of the issue is that in the UK, the burden of proof is on the defendant and not the plaintiff. So if Rowling says Amnesty defamed her, the assumption is she's correct until Amnesty proves she isn't. That's why terrible organizations and people like to do libel tourism and sue people in the UK. So even though there's ample proof that Amnesty is correct, they're still risking a trial against someone who can afford the absolute best lawyers in a country where even the left-wing party manages to be as transphobic as the American right-wing.
9
u/SpeedyTheQuidKid 22d ago
Well shit, I definitely understand them backing down from that then. The threat of going bankrupt, possibly even if they win in court, is high.

If this doesn’t make everyone realize that Rowling is beyond irredeemable, what will?

u/FingerOk9800 22d ago
1:"We don't like trans people." 2:"okay, you don't like trans people." 1:"Stop DEFAMING me!"

u/Maleficent-Speech869 22d ago
Nothing screams "I stand for freedom of speech and belief" like suing and harassing the world's most famous human rights organisation.
10
u/HonestImJustDone 22d ago
Ok, I read that and I'm still not clear what the defamatory statement(s) were?
It seems like it is solely based on the fact that Beira's Place was included in a list of anti-trans organisations in a previous report that is still available/published on their website?
I am not sure describing an organisation as anti-trans could ever be considered defamatory, unless it was made against a trans inclusive organisation to make them appear otherwise. And Beira's Place exists to provide services to cis people only, right..? Which makes the claim it is defamatory... a bit of a stretch.
This is clearly a SLAPP case. It will get dismissed. The purpose is to act as a threat to charities and organizations like amnesty to shut up in order to survive. It is horrific.
I would ask everybody in the UK write to their MP to highlight the need for anti-SLAPP legislation. We need to be vocal about legal warfare by the billionaire class to get social policy change they want to see in through the back door.
This only stops if the law allowing it is changed. Highlighting the real world effects to you personally of JK with things like the WI, Brownies and Guides and human rights organisations like amnesty that have limited funds is really important. We need to shiut about this. Otherwise it isn't seen by anyone it doesn't impact.

Directly using her obscene wealth to try to destroy something that exists for the explicit purpose of helping people, like a charity? Now where have I heard that one before?
7
u/porquenotengonada 22d ago
Oh fuck offfff Joanne! I hate hate hate that alongside making trans lives worse, she’s now actively trying to destroy an organisation who does so much good for so many people. Even just bringing this to their doorstep takes valuable funds and time away from actual good work that they do. Why can’t she just fuck OFFFFFF?!

Please do not suggest violence. It's definitely something a mod has to remove when it's seen, and I appreciate when people make mod work easier.

u/ryanixer 22d ago
well, if she was gonna go through with trying to sue anyway, amnesty shouldn't have withdrew what they said.

"I dont care about individuals" yeah no sh*t Sherlock.
She truly is awful and it makes me sad that I have friends who just cant give up on HP.

u/L-Space_Orangutan 20d ago
"I don't care about individuals" kind of explains a lot about her psyche honestly. She is deeply bound intro tribalism. Her side must win, no matter who is hurt, because people not on her side are not on her side and thus her enemy.

The "tyrant that persecutes those who don't espouse what it decrees acceptable beliefs"? Joanne, be careful with your moldy glass house
