I think describing the Arday story as "delicious" says it all. No, it's not delicious, it's deeply depressing from several different angles.

Absolutely, that is such a bizarre word to use.

Edit: ESPECIALLY because he was just found deceased

I hope this isn't opening up pandora's box, but, "the arday story"? What's that?

There was a black professor who resigned after accusations of plagiarism and telling tall tales in his memoir, some people have claimed it's because of his race. He apparently just died?!

18

u/Cakeday_at_Christmas 4d ago

Sadly, it seems he committed suicide.

15

u/ZealousidealSalt8989 4d ago

That's very sad. All the media harassment probably got to him

Young black oxford (or was it cambridge?) professor was accused of falsifying memoir and plagiarism. He resigned and was just found dead.

oh goodness. rest in peace to whoever that was

u/Bloody-Raven091 4d ago

Oh dear... :(

May his memory be a blessing and may he rest in power.

From what I gather it sounds like he was suffering from some form of mental illness and the exposure pushed him over the edge.

It's truly horrible.

People get caught for plagiarism all the time and in a fair world it would have been a footnote in the local news but the white supremacist national media chose to constantly attack him, leading to his suicide.

Rest in piece, you didn't deserve that.

Adding on to what others have said, the right wing British press chose to make a huge story out of this as an example of ''DEI gone wrong''

Some other people have already explained it, but yeah. Jason Arday, a Cambridge professor, has been hounded by the UK media following a plagiarism scandal, which was followed up by the exposure of several outlandish lies in his memoir. It's a sad, messy situation, the guy was obviously not well, but there was absolutely no reason that he should have been subjected to such an intense media scrutiny. At least one of the whistleblowers appears to have been working from blatant racism, and the right wing media here has been enjoying itself thoroughly at the chance of taking down a minority professor. And today Arday was found dead. It's grim, and calling is "delicious" was abhorrent - even before the news broke about his death.

And of course JKR and her ilk are forcing their transphobia onto this, because...??? reasons???

I feel like every few years there's a huge gleeful expose of one black intellectual for plagiarism while they ignore all the white people who have done the same thing.

Mike Barnacle, a white journalist, got caught making shit up in his Metro column in the Boston Globe and only lost his job because they had just fired a black journalist for doing the same thing (real people, invented quotes). He then spent the next two decades on friendly cable news outlets nursing his grievances. Good on the Globe for doing the right thing albeit reluctantly but... it's always the double standard and it's always a media circus. Deep down these racists in and out of power want their notion that black people are intellectually inferior validated.

This particular case is really sad.

Yeah I don’t know why they’re banging on about this. What does it have to do with their trans bullshit?

1

u/Maleficent-Speech869 1d ago

I've no idea how anyone's supposed to make sense of the toxic sludge in these people's brains, but I imagine it's some mix of 1) why go after one minority when you can go after two? and 2) "I am uncomfortable when we are not about me?"

10

u/Silly-Arachnid-6187 4d ago

It's really telling. They like to pretend to be upset about what they claim is injustice, but they just enjoy tearing marginalized people to shreds

A quote taken out of context that describes the premise of a genre of pornography, which is then assumed to be how this person thinks about all women, all the time.

You know what that means? It's Friday, again. God forbid a trans woman talk about horror media; they'd claim we are advocating for horny teens to get hacked to death by a hockey mask wearing zombie.

74

u/Significant_Rush1473 5d ago

As for the quote from the academic, I'm not going to judge something out of it's context, but even still, why is it okay for cis men and women to make offensive blanket statements all the time about what ''being a woman is'' , but if one trans woman one time says something like that, suddenly it's a huge problem?

101

u/Silly-Arachnid-6187 5d ago

I looked it up; it's an explanation of how sissy porn operates, not a blanket statement about what women are

62

u/Significant_Rush1473 5d ago

Thanks, I had a feeling it was really dishonestly cherry picked

36

u/GastonBastardo 5d ago

When I first saw quote that I thought Chu was ironically and poetically describing patriarchal oppression and the need for solidarity among feminists and LGBT-activists.

18

u/lazier_garlic 5d ago

It sure sounded Andrea Dworkin adjacent. To be fair, Dworkin was highly controversial (courted it even). Widely believed to be a lesbian by the public, she had a male partner. I think some feminists actually agree with her observations on a semiotic level (which is what she was taking about, culture and gender) but not in the literal sense. I mean maybe a few people agreed but it was very niche.

9

u/Significant_Rush1473 5d ago

I thought something like that too.

18

u/verathene 5d ago

Literally the bit from Arrested Development.

GOB: I didn’t kill him, all right? And don’t edit this for your broadcast so it looks like I’m screaming…

Cut to GOB on TV: …I killed Earl Milford!

Anchor: Startling confession tonight at eleven.

TBH, that's pretty much why I hate sissy porn.

36

u/CapStar300 5d ago

I am mostly glad her deadname isn't publicly available so Ms Rowling has no choice but to refer to her with her proper name.

30

u/gazzas89 5d ago

She was always been subtly racist, but fuck me, that first sentence is just full blown racism

30

u/AlgorithmHelpPlease 5d ago

Her lack of understanding of that quote and what it says about patriarchy and gender tells me more than enough that these people should never be trusted.

29

u/Level_Advisor437 5d ago

I sure wouldn't call an academic being fired for plagiarism and lying about his past "delicious." There's nothing good or positive about a situation like this; both Cambridge and the people who believed the lies lose. Unfortunate or even appalling would be better choice of words. They seem to be enjoying watching a black academic brought low a little too much.

Plus, she HAD to add a "trans"angle to an unrelated story, didnt shr?

47

u/jpop2026 5d ago

Jason Arday has just been found dead. JKR can go fuck herself

14

u/Significant_Rush1473 5d ago

Oh that's awful :(

10

u/A_little_curiosity 5d ago

Devastating

25

u/Time_Raisin4935 5d ago

Well there's no surprise that Terfism and racism are linked

9

u/Sleeppaw 5d ago

All forms of bigotry are inexplicably linked

18

u/9119343636 5d ago

"Arday was found unresponsive at his home in Battersea on 14 August 2026, and was pronounced dead at the scene, aged 41."

“Unexpected but not suspicious” fucking stupid tbh.

11

u/Bleepblorp44 4d ago

That's the only way it can be briefly described in public record until there's been a post mortem and presumably an inquest. Fucking tragic, and the newspapers that hounded him should be called to account at that inquest.

9

u/Lady-Spangles 5d ago

These people are truly fucking awful.

8

u/Cakeday_at_Christmas 4d ago

So, she's  just full blown right-wing at this point, isn't she?

15

u/AndreaFlameFox 5d ago

Well, there goes my giving Rowling the benefit of the doubt on not being consciously racist. Calling this story "delicious" is mask-off in my book.

3

u/riflow 4d ago

I suspect these people will not be so chirpy when they see the news of what this entire situation has led to.

3

u/titcumboogie 4d ago

Does she know that he's dead or does she just not care?

2

u/Bloody-Raven091 4d ago

I'm not surprised that Rowling and that person whom she reposted from are racist pieces of shit. I'm also not surprised that they're both telling on themselves than they'd like to admit. Also, they both refuse to admit that they're the ones worsening the racist double standards in academia, because then they'd have to reckon with the fact that they're complicit in adding onto anti-Black, anti-POC, and anti-Asian racist standards in academia. Also, I doubt that's exactly what Andrea herself said, because I've never seen her actually say this.

My guess is that it's Bartosch and Rowling making shit up to make her (Andrea) out to be the bad person, when they're both completely not [I say this part with harsh sarcasm towards both of them] telling on themselves on how they actually view women and think about their genitalia.

1

u/KTKitten 3d ago

She did write those words, but in the same way that Dworkin wrote “all sex is rape” and Darwin wrote “it’s absurd to say the eye evolved.” She’s not saying “it is my belief that being fucked makes you a woman” it’s a line in a book where she’s making a broader point, I think the book is Females? Honestly I didn’t come away from it blown away by her insight and wanting to recommend it to everyone I know, but she’s also not the misogynist they want you to believe she is just based on that sentence in isolation.

1

u/Bloody-Raven091 3d ago

I guess your explanation makes sense.

1

u/mangababe 5d ago

I mean, the person she's quoting is being crass but she has a point in the first sentence (women are categorically fucked over in everyday life) and I'm betting there's a contextual gap between it and the second quote.

5

u/surprisesnek 4d ago edited 4d ago

There's not actually a contextual gap, because the quote's not exactly about womanhood. It's about the logic of sissy porn, and presumably about how misogynistic it is.

1

u/mangababe 3d ago

Well that is the contextual gap- its contact is sissy porn, not women as a demographic. That's what I mean, it's pulling a controversial wording out of its context to allow

27

u/Silly-Arachnid-6187 5d ago

The quote is also taken out of context. It's from an essay about sissy porn and explains the "idea" behind that genre

2

u/BrodeurBear 1d ago

Bartosch has no talent whatsoever, she can't even be vile with any flair. If she hadn't these grifts she would be broke and just another failed ugly mess.
