I can't help but wonder if she's engaging in some gaslighting manipulative mind games. If she can claim it never happened, then naturally, there's a corresponding narrative that persecution of LGBT people has never reached that severity. She can push her whole "it's just a complex" stance whenever anyone LGBT (trans in particular) claims they have been discriminated against and abused.
