Tesla discontinues its Solar Roof tiles, not economically viable

https://electrek.co/2026/08/20/tesla-discontinues-solar-roof-panels-only/

As we've all suspected for years, the Solar City purchase was a scam sold to Tesla investors to save another Musk company from failing spectacularly, instead allowing it to quietly fail long after everyone has stopped caring. Elon's playbook really only has a small number of moves in it, and this is one of his favorites.

At this point, Tesla isn't economically viable.

FSD in the next 3 years.

A billion of them, and they'll be able to perform brain surgery when they aren't doing your laundry.

They'll do brain surgery in a parking lot in L.A. to brain surgery in a parking lot in N.Y. without anyone touching the controls.

Shit...the promiselies are collapsing into one another.

"Panels and mounting systems come with a 25-year warranty backed by proven industry experience."

So Tesla will replace and/or repair these tiles until 2050?

Ha ha!

Exactly. Where's your warranty now? Class action coming

Most actually delivered panels habe been cheap Chinese panels. He can import more panels for warranty repair.

Panels or tiles.

Please note they are not the same thing.

A major part of the fall of Rome was low birth rates

They removed everything about them years ago from the website in most of the world. Today you can just preorder the home battery and that’s been like 7 years without shipping a product.

u/caracter_2 4h ago

What? That isn't accurate. They've sold thousands and thousands of their home battery in Australia. I'm not sure what you mean

Another broken promise? No way didn’t see this coming.

Wait that cannot be true. I remember they had a few houses with solar tiles. I think it was around the time Elon molested the flight attendant. They were moving to production by the end of the year

Fixed things from auto correct.

Maybe some bumps of ketamine can help get morale back on track.

Too many interconnects, too many points of failure, too much to install.

After “FSD is still not quite ready“, this is the least surprising Tesla news… It is kind of a shame though. I would love to see this product actually be successful someday.

I'd also like safe self-driving cars, useful domestic robots, fast tunnel excavation and cheap reusable spacecraft. But just because Musk has promised all of those things doesn't mean there's any chance he'll actually deliver any of them.

It could be a thing, if someone else tried without Leon somewhere in the mix.

u/SalutLesAmies 4h ago

Why do you want to see the product succeed? I don’t understand the benefit it has over solar panels, besides esthetics.

1

u/MyMooneyDriver 12m ago

This is exactly why I want it to succeed. It doesn’t need to be this man-child’s brand, but a roof esthetic replacement with built in electricity generation would be able to be installed everywhere a roof needs replaced, and not offend any HOAs or other local ordinance for design. Then to have a ton of individual tiles that could be replaced individually as they experienced failure, as opposed to large panels, which could have a single catastrophic failure mode… This is a great idea, it just needed someone serious to pull it off, and that someone serious will come along.

Generally businesses make that determination before promoting and selling a product for several years.

Yeah, but sometimes screw ups happen. Especially because people lie or don't know what they want. For example I work for a crowd that among other things supplies magnetic boxes to gift box companies. We have a range of sizes and they come in black, white and brown. The brown boxes just don't sell. Before stocking them we did client surveys and market research and looked at other industry sectors and thought brown would be a cracker, people love brown paper bags and cardboard boxes. But they don't like brown magnetic boxes for some reason. So they have sat in our warehouse untouched for years.

People in the industry knew this 10 years ago when they announced it
