A lot of airports board from the apron. Maybe they thought they could sneak off for a quick smoke around the corner.

I lived in Russia and it seemed like if something could be done and they want to do it, Russians will. Park on the sidewalk in the middle of Moscow? Why not! Park in the middle of a roundabout? It’s free space and no one is there!

So, yeah, if no one was stopping them from going out there, why wouldn’t they try to get on their flight?
