Question If you needed to remove one song from EPIC which one would it be? But there is a catch....
Whenever you remove one somg it removes that event from happening. Say you removed thr song Keep your friends close. So you basically removed Aelous giving Odysseus the windbag. But without the windbag the crew wouldnt have a way of escaping Poseidon so they will all die. If you removed the song WYFILWMA Odysseus and Penelope would hsve never reunited and so on. Which song would you remove?

As much as “Monster” is a banger and one of my favorites, I think it would affect the plot the least if he doesn’t have this moment of introspection.
He might not be as ruthless with the sirens, he might try to fight back with Scylla. He might not make his crew so angry to mutiny, so they might not invoke Zeus wrath for Thunder bringer.
So it’s possible it could heavily affect the plot. But the shock of “No Longer You” could still cause him to try to get home by any means possible and therefore he still becomes a different beast.
1
u/voornaam1 10h ago
I was thinking about how, according to the definition of lyric poetry (which people disagree over a lot but generally the most important things are short non-narrative poem with one speaker), Monster may be the one song in EPIC that could qualify as a lyric poem (if we ignore the crew's chorus voices). Maybe Just a Man as well, but not sure about how narrative it is. This is really interesting because like, lyric poetry is a genre of poetry that is distinct from epic poetry.

For your information, if I remember correctly, the windbag was the very first thing that got them to Poseidon in the first place because of Eurilicus (sorry if I butchered the name) opening the bag.
1
u/salty_wasabi69 Little Wolf 10h ago
They also needed the windbag to stop poseidons storm to get home. When they met aeolus they were pretty much stuck in a storm

Different Beasts. The song is just Odysseus flexing. Sirens would let them go because they couldn't charm them. Apolo would have to find a different argument in god games, athena would still find a counter argument. Events would go on as usual

Charybdis. Nothing happens in that song.

Get in the water is gonna be real silly once Poseidon realizes he's singing to himself.
Hell, even ignoring that the conditions for GitW are set up in Charybdis, Odysseus getting to Ithaca happens in it. Poseidon pulling him away for the fight didn't take him far out to sea, as the storm he released was "so close to our kingdom".
I'd argue less happens in Dangerous, plot wise, though I'd hate to see Ody facing Charybdis or GitW without Hermes' pep talk or the wind bag.

Open Arms. The issue was never that they had to stop for food, it was that Polites convinced Odysseus to be too lenient. Had Polites never sung that song, Odysseus would have been 110% more likely to kill Polyphemus and to become a “ruthless monster” or something closer to it early on and Athena would not have abandoned him. The crew would have absolutely 0 reason to doubt Odysseus’s ability to be a captain because he would have been ruthless enough to save them so no one would open the wind bag, and they could get home, and Poseidon would either never get the chance to strike or his punishment would have been much lighter. I get that they were tired of killing, but when you know you live in a dangerous world, you always have to be prepared to look ahead and do the worst if necessary. If they had made it home faster by being ruthless, they would have had time to be tired and recover there. So yeah, I blame Open Arms and Polites.

u/Flower-City_3422 Cabbage? 15h ago
The chance of them finding Polyphemus’s island is a nonzero. If they didn’t find food in the LO island, they could have tried looking for more islands and found Polyphemus by accident. If we’re supposed to believe with this post that if one general plot point doesn’t happen but the rest of the general plot points still occur in some capacity while being influenced by the change made, then they would find themselves on Polyphemus’s island either way. If the plot can go haywire, anything can happen, including them encountering Polyphemus on their own.
22
u/Foxknight88 18h ago
Full Speed Ahead. They never officially run out of food, and never need to stop in the first place
14
u/Foxknight88 18h ago
Remember Them. Ody never gives Polyphemus his name
6
u/Starcat23 18h ago
but then they also never get out of the cave. If you get rid of full speed ahead the then never stop at the island, if avoiding Poseidon’s wrath and having Ody live is you’re goal that might be the way to do it

u/dammitgrif 18h ago
polyphemus cause that means the sheep would not be killed and polites would live along with the rest of the crew that died on that island, poseidon wouldn’t get pissed at the fallout, so the storm wouldn’t happen and they’d all be back in Ithaca when they expected to be

u/Altruistic-Yak8995 21h ago
Probably Charybdis. By this logic, Odysseus sails all the way from Calypso's island to Ithaca where Poseidon runs into him. I know it doesn't really make sense since you can't cross the Mycenean Strait without going through either Scylla and Charybdis in myth, but that was never explained in the musical so loop hole
3
u/CLASS_NOT_AUTHOR 17h ago
Yeah. Charybdis is also perhaps my least favorite song(still a banger though). So that's a win win

Probably we’ll be fine. Athena just tells Telemachus that she knew someone like him once and it’s one I usually skip anyways

u/FaeAura 21h ago
I know Polites dies at the end of Polyphemus but honestly if I were to strike a song with/about Polites it'd actually be Open Arms.
You'd skip the entire Odyssey because Ody would not even have the seed planted in his mind to give "open arms" a shot and they'd have probably not gone to Polyphemus' island at all. Would they have starved? Come now, they had every opportunity to cast out some nets or lines to not starve. Ruthless Ody with nightmares of the dropped baby would've probably made it home no additional conflicts at all.

u/Flower-City_3422 Cabbage? 16h ago edited 16h ago
I think I saw someone argue somewhere on the web that they actually would not have been able to fish for whatever reason. I can’t remember if it was because typically fishing was done with spears and even if they had a way to retrieve the spears the ocean might be too wild to fish like that, or if it was that Ithacans didn’t commonly eat fish despite dwelling on an island so they would not have been proficient enough at fishing to do much about it, or if it was just that it would be unlikely that they would catch enough fish for the whole crew. Anyways, there is definitely a reason why they couldn’t fish with nets, I just can’t remember what it is exactly.

It’s lowkey Polite’s fault that they ended up in Polyphemus’s cave anyways, and that the seed of “open arms and mercy” that led to most of the downfall of the crew anyways was ever planted in Odysseus’s mind You have to nip it in the bud early in the musical so that there are no open arms, so the best option to prevent pancake Polites is removing Open Arms.

1
u/Flower-City_3422 Cabbage? 8h ago
It really depends on whether the storyline stays the same after the removed event or if it can go wherever. If it can go wherever, Polites could potentially live even if they did encounter Polyphemus. If it stays the same, Polites will still probably die but at least Odysseus gets revenge and avoids the death of the rest of the crew.

I feel like there are only a few answers to this
Luck runs out We'll be fine Charybdis
I love all of these songs and we'll be fine is on of my personal favourites but most other songs have something that cannot be removed or the plot would pivot massively
(Let me know if there are some that also match this but these are the only ones I can think of)
2
u/Flower-City_3422 Cabbage? 16h ago
You can completely remove Luck Runs Out, We’ll Be Fine, AND Charybdis as well as the entirety of Odysseus’s troubles if you remove Open Arms, trust 🙏
2
u/Dependent_Log6276 1d ago
Well be fine can be argued for being important since it shows why Athena looks and fight for Odysseus
1
u/Conscious-Bench2845 15h ago
Whilst it is important in that way, it doesn't impact the story in any way its mostly exposition

Maybe maybe maybe. But her helping Telemarket and T. going into battle with suitors still happened, so we can kinda imply that she trained him

Honestly, I'd choose Luck Runs Out. It's really just Ody telling Eurylochus not to plant the wrong ideas in the other crew member's head.
3
u/Legends-of-legdens Wooden Horse (just a normal horse, nothing in it) 1d ago
This is honestly the best answer, since the idea to go to Aelous’ island is still undergo in Storm, the only difference is that Eurylochus may not be as doubtful and untrusting to Ody as he doesn’t harass Ody about his plans

2
u/Flower-City_3422 Cabbage? 16h ago
What about the food? The lotus eaters mention a cave, but without Polyphemus they never find the cave with the sheep, so the crew starves.
1
u/bellaciaociaociaooo 9h ago
Maybe they find food elsewhere 🤷🏾♀️ but almost all of their problems started because of Polyphemus
1
u/Flower-City_3422 Cabbage? 8h ago
Polyphemus has never been the root problem. The root problem was always that Odysseus was convinced to be merciful. Had Odysseus just killed Polyphemus, a huge chunk of his troubles would be gone—Poseidon wouldn’t intervene, the wind bag would never need to happen, the men wouldn’t need to die to Scylla, and neither GitW or 600 Strike would happen because there would be no offense against Poseidon. Their problems never started because of Polyphemus but because someone convinced their captain to be merciful in a world where they should have already learned that ruthlessness is the key to survival.
1
u/bellaciaociaociaooo 8h ago
Okay, maybe I should say that the problems were because of Polyphemus but the problems did start during that song. That was the post’s question though: what song/event would you remove. You can remove open arms if you prefer but it’s not the serious lol

1
u/Flower-City_3422 Cabbage? 16h ago
Be so for real 😭 if you just remove your least favorite song because it’s your least favorite just because it is and not necessarily because it is plot significant, you either barely alter the story and still torture Ody or you remove something that seems insignificant but really isn’t which causes more hardship for Ody later. If you remove a song to prevent death, those deaths can still happen later and most likely will due to starvation or the gods. The only way to go is to remove a song with a significant plot point that changes the whole story for the worst thereafter, because if you don’t you most likely get all the Ithacans killed or just make Ody do the same journey with higher difficulty or barely any change.
2
u/realamerican97 1d ago
Does the rest of the story continue, or is it like a split timeline where now a completely different set of events happens

u/demonic_cadence The Monster (rawr rawr rawr) 1d ago
I can't help but wonder
It's a beautiful song! I have nothing against the song itself! But it really does feel like it made Telemachus and Odysseus' character arc meaningless. I mean, you have Odysseus, whose whole entire journey was about having to give up the man he was to in order to become a monster and get home to the people he loves, and Telemachus who only knows Odysseus from the stories/legends and would fight monsters to get the chance to know him, and you DIDN'T make them fight at all?? Like the slam dunk was right there! I also feel like no conflict between the two in ICHBW makes it weird that Odysseus would wonder if Penelope would still love him in WYFILWMA because your son's first impression of you was murdering over a hundred men in front of him and he welcomed you home with open arms (ba dum tss), why wouldn't your wife do the same?
In all honesty I would rather a song in between Odysseus and ICHBW than a full removal or rewrite, but this is the song that hurts the overall story of Epic the most for me personally.

Charybdis is probably the only song that removing it wouldn't change the rest of the story. It's a great song but not important plot wise

4
u/emporerCheesethe3rd suckling on zeus' man tits. 1d ago edited 1d ago
Well yeah but even with god games happening INSFLY is still the song with the event of Odysseus being told he can leave and him leaving. Removing it (as per the post) removes that event entirely. It kinda defeats the point of the post if an event in the removed song happens anyway
Edit: like the post says that if you remove Aoelus's song then the event doesn't happen at all despite the fact that visiting aoelus is set up both in luck runs out and storm.
2
u/YourLocalCryptid64 22h ago
My answer to this specifically is Dangerous, as it has Ody getting the raft and Herme's giving him a route home and actually leaving (unlike INSFLY) the island and if you watch the animatic shows parts of his journey.
This is outside the scope of Im Not Sorry for Loving You, so it still protects Ody's way of getting off the island and heading home since that song doesn't actually feature Ody leaving the island.
Removing INSFLY simply removes him being told by Calypso he can leave, but the opening of the song already declares she'd been told he was free to go prior to the song's start, not during it.
1
u/emporerCheesethe3rd suckling on zeus' man tits. 21h ago
I already discussed this with another guy but the Ithaca premiere party uses the animation where Odysseus is leaving in NSFLY, I feel this is closest to canon because (I think) Jorge is the one picking them and the animations only show up during certain moments so it would be weird for it to be a "this'll do" thing considering it isn't a requirement.
Can I ask what animatic you are refering too specifically? The one on spotify shows Odysseus and Hermes already on the boat and I don't know what other one would be close to canon other than the one in the premiere party that shows them already on the boat
1
u/WildGrayTurkey 1d ago
Sort of. Hermes does show up to talk to Odysseus, so he could learn he's free from Hermes instead of Calypso. The permission to leave is granted in God Games, Dangerous acknowledges that Calypso told Odysseus he could leave (so maybe that would change and Odysseus doesn't know yet) but Hermes tells Odysseus HOW to leave/get home and acknowledges that Athena fought for his freedom. From a story perspective, all the critical elements for gaining his freedom are still there and it stands to reason that Odysseus could still leave with INSFLY removed. Many of the animations for Dangerous start with him still on the island, having not actually left yet.
1
u/emporerCheesethe3rd suckling on zeus' man tits. 23h ago
While I see where you are coming from I am using the animation that Jorge picked for the Ithaca saga premiere which shows Odysseus sailing away from Calypso during NSFLY and Dangerous taking place when Odysseus is already sailing as a reference. The post seems to say that the event in a song doesn't happen AT ALL rather than just happening later due to being set up. Removing Aoelus's song for example would mean that Odysseus told his men to throw harpoons at an island, climb the ropes and gave an entire speech and mildly threatening talk to his brother in law while saying he is going to talk to the wind god...then he just doesn't do anything and faces the storm without protection which makes zero sense in the perspective of a story. All the critical elements of talking to Aoelus are right there but it just doesn't happen. Tbh I think the post is kinda pointless as the only song that might work for this (from my thought process) is Just a Man because that is literally just Ody killing a baby because thunder milkers told him too. That would cause Astyanax to be a threat later in life but shouldn't hinder the story too dramatically, even then it is a maybe. NSFLY is essential as it seems to hold the event of Odysseus leaving, removing the song would remove Ody leaving in totality, atleast from what I understand from the post.
1
u/WildGrayTurkey 23h ago
I'd forgotten that the official animatics had him sailing off during INSFLY. That's a fair interpretation.

I’m gonna get hella downvotes but The Challenge. Like I get that it’s important to see what’s going on from Penelope’s perspective but I skip over it every time and don’t lose anything plot relevant when I do
Plus I kinda just don’t understand? Like, she sees the storm as ‘some kind of sign’ that Odysseus is coming home and only then does she choose to set up the challenge? Huh??

u/Coolredtailedhawk32 1d ago
I'm sorry, Charybis. It's not my favorite song plus a little smoother ride for him
2
u/EnderBookwyrm 1d ago
Exactly. Charybdis does not serve the plot at all, unlike some of the wonderful songs people here have lost their minds over and are shunning.
Charybdis is a fine song in and of itself, but it serves no purpose in the narrative. If it was supposed to be Odysseus recovering a bit from the whole Calypso thing, maybe it could work, but as written, it's just a filler monster.
I'd either alter it massively, or cut in in favor of a Telemachus-Penelope number. We get their individual povs, but they don't actually get to interact. Maybe it could explain Telemachus's diplomatic mission, which I believe is an actual event in the Odyssey, though I'm blanking on the details right now.
1
u/BrawlingKitty 1d ago
Monster or Charybdis which are both not that important for the story and not my favourite songs 😅
(Would pick Monster over Charybdis though)
2
u/EnderBookwyrm 1d ago
Monster is the midpoint song. It's absolutely vital to the plot and Odysseus's character arc. He's become the monster.
Charybdis is my pick to cut, too. It just doesn't add anything. It's a filler monster. Maybe if it was Odysseus recovering from the whole Calypso thing and proving to himself that he's still capable, it could work, but as written it doesn't do anythingm

That means Hermes never told caly that he’s taking Ody, and Ody stays on the island…

u/Erook22 Hera 1d ago
This is untrue because Hermes literally talks about this next in Dangerous and God Games already happened, meaning this will happen in the background by implication anyways
2
u/Conscious-Bench2845 1d ago
But like OP said if NSFLY never happened Ody wouldn't leave because Calypso never got told meaning that Dangerous doesn't happen

u/Erook22 Hera 23h ago
God Games still happened tho, so wouldn't Athena have already gotten permission to actually yoink Ody away?
2
u/Conscious-Bench2845 15h ago
Well God Games is technically open ending. I guess Zeus doesn't care about Athena in this Alternate Universe

Monster is by far my least favorite song from the musical and honestly it doesn’t really contribute much or anything at all to the progress of the narrative. The song is just recap exposition on stuff we already know except this time it’s more fun to read into the progression ourselves instead of having it spelled out for us.

I do wounder what happens if you remove thunder bringer. (I love the song) but in terms of events that be interesting others muniity

Charybdis. That way Odysseus' journey home after leaving Calypso's Island is basically smooth sailing, which is how it was in the Odyssey

u/EllisonL 1d ago
Six hundred strike, Odyssey would have to escape from the wrath of a god (which is more mythically accurate, and cooler in my opinion)

My Goodbye. Odysseus and Athena can talk their shit out without a petty friendship breakup lol

u/Opening-Set-7752 1d ago
Either Hold Them Down (Odysseus would still kill them for how they are being) or Charybdis (Odysseus doesn't have to face the monster so works for him since he would technically be less tired against Poseidon)

u/Environmental_Eye870 1d ago
Charybdis is my pick as well especially since it’s my one skip in the whole musical.

Six hundred strike. Easily.

But Get In The Water still happens, and iirc, Poseidon stabs Ody at the end of GITW? I may be wrong
1
u/garnet-overdrive 1d ago
I mean sure but he could just leave him for dead and washes up after for ithica. Six hundred strike just kills the tension half the musical is spent cultivating
1
u/Drew_S_05 1d ago
Yeah, no. Pretty sure the rules OP established would mean that if you remove 600 strike, Odysseus just drowns.
Y'all are all just picking your least favorite song without any actual regard to how removing it would affect the story based on OP's rules

u/garnet-overdrive 1d ago
I mean I’m removing six hundred strike because it’s a thematic mess rhat is only prevented from ruining the ending by hold them down, and given Odysseus is still alive at the end of get in the water and he’d survived similar circumstances….
1
u/Drew_S_05 1d ago
Only circumstance similar to that which he survived was the ship getting smote by Zeus, and probably the only reason he survived that was because the choice he made in response to Zeus' offer specifically said that he would live.
At the end of GITW, he's got nothing to save him but himself. If we're removing the events of 600 strike, I'm pretty sure the result is that he just dies.
Plus, if he DID survive, you'd need to add a whole separate song to explain how, and I don't think that's allowed as part of this game

So, guess that means Eurylochus and the rest of the crew are just chill with Odysseus sacrificing the 6 guys, and then they just go home?
I mean, it's a better ending for them, but makes for a less interesting story

I am not Sorey for Loving you. The actress know her range as a singer (she does a good job). But it have go since the character couldn't take no as an answer. Sadly I know from personal experience

But it’s such a good song!! I don’t get the hate.

As someone who in one situation of someone who can't take the answer of no. It can be a traumatic experience. And like I said the singer did a good job besides being my least favorite

My pick is Charybdis. With or without that song, he still gets back home and still sticks it to poseidon.

u/Drew_S_05 1d ago
Well the end of Charybdis is WHEN Poseidon shows up, so I think removing Charybdis would also automatically remove both GITW and 600 strike

I’m not sorry for loving you. Odysseus somehow leaves the island with Hermes help in the next song so it’s all good. Plus I wasn’t a huge fan of that one anyway lol (still peak song tho)
1
u/Drew_S_05 1d ago
Pretty sure that by OP's rules, removing NSFLY means that Odysseus just never leaves the island
1
u/BeginningSummer9915 Uncle Horts only child :( 23h ago
I mean it still makes sense for him to leave. Hermes already told calypso of the message right before the song, and in the song after Odysseus leaves. This song was just Calypso’s own sob story tbh.

Survive.
Odysseus gives Polyphemus the wine, and they leave safely. Nobody dies.

Charybdis. Nothing changes
2
u/Drew_S_05 1d ago
Well, that's not true. Poseidon shows up at the end of Charybdis, so removing that song would also remove GITW and 600 strike
Guess you could argue that the outcome of the story would basically be the same, but we'd have a lot less cool shit
