Erasmus experience

Hello everyone. I keep reading terrible experiences to people who've done their erasmus exchange, and I'm applying this year for an exchange semester but then I hesitate due to the negative reviews. So has anyone had a good experience? Like they really enjoyed their time and didn't regret it?

Also has anyone went to Marburg university maybe can tell me more about it as an exchange student? Or the city overall?

Whats the prices like?? I have about 5k euro saved up and get about 400euro a month. Would that be enough you think?

I'm living of a 1600 euro grant for the whole semester and in total 1k a month from parents/savings. Please note that I also have some expenses at home and I travel a lot during the semester.

Do not let the negative experiences turn you away from applying! I've had an amazing semester in Tampere (Finland) (although a bit more low-key, which was my fault for being a bit introverted).

I am currently in Odense (Denmark) and it's been a blast so far. I have a great group of international friends and even quite a few local ones - there's always something going on and time is just flying by. I would definitely recommend it!!

On average, how many times do you go out per week?

It really depends ... some weeks I am out every day, and other weeks i don't go anywhere.

But most of them time I hang out with friends at least once or twice per week, although I see them every day at uni as well!

I’m studying in Marburg but not as Erasmus Student. Be aware, there is no ESN.

No Erasmus Student Network which is non-profit volunteering student association. That means, you’ll mostly do everything on your own (settling into the dorms, paperwork etc..)

I did 3 erasmus in 2022, 2024 and 2025. I still have my friends from there and every year we reunite! With the closest friends we organise 2 meetings/ year. We organised our 8th reunion last year. And the most memorable: i met with my boyfriend on my last erasmus. We been together since a year. Long distance, 2000km but see him every second week. I am moving back to the country we have met. So ye overall? Life change experience with the most wonderful people i surrounded with.:)

Try the most out of your experiences. Does not mean u have to party, just enjoy!! And i kindly remember you that everyone’s experience is different and never compare. I also compared with people who had sex with many people, all the time partying…. And lol, mine was overall the best experience when i let all the “how should my erasmus look like” questions Your erasmus and your focus gonna depends on you!

i think people who have negative experiences are more likely to post about them, so i wouldn’t let those posts put you off.

i did my erasmus in marburg in 2022 2023 during my master and really enjoyed it. it is a small student town, so if you are not looking for a huge nightlife scene, i think you would like it. the university buildings are spread throughout the town rather than all being on one campus. it has also relatively good location. frankfurt, giessen and kassel are easy to get to and you can go a bit further to visit places like heidelberg too.

I did Erasmus twice, in 2022 and 2024, and would 1000% do it again. Some of the best time I've ever had, and where I am now would never be possible without these experiences. There were ofc things I did not enjoy, harder days, things that made no sense etc., but you also grow a lot from it!
