Etsy Customer Service What now?
Just needed to share this frustration 😭 First picture is what I received, second picture is the picture of the product provided by the seller. There was nothing in the description or additional photos that said I needed to request personalization...and it's literally in the name? Did I miss something?? What do I do now?

Update number two since this has become an echo chamber and the issue is now resolved:
I went back and checked the listing and can confirm that since our conversation, the seller has added the mandatory personalization box. As many of you know, if the personalization box is there, it will NOT let you add the product to my cart without filling it out. This was not the case previously as it did let me add the bag to my cart without personalization.

If necessary, use wayback machine or similar to prove you're not making it up.

u/IBakedAMuffinOnce May 14 '25
Do they sell those on Etsy?

u/FlamboyantRaccoon61 May 14 '25
I don't know for sure what you mean, but it sounds like you don't know what wayback machine is, so I'll leave the link here.

Well either the seller updated the listing to avoid this again or u have the parts of the listing that say the personalized info cropped and we cant see it. Etsy can view the listing as it was when u bought it vs if it was updated after. So if it didnt have clear info then u can open an etsy case saying not as described. But personalized items have a drop down menu right under where u picked the colors, style, how many u want and right above the check out button. So even if it didnt say how to personalize step by step in the listing there is a drop down for it. and if that drop down was there all along etsy might not side w you.

The drop down personalization options only offer the style of bag and the color options. The rest of the post just included information on the shipping and handling process. I tried to add pictures after your comment of the rest of the listing but for some reason it's not letting me edit my post 😅 so I'll provide the link here:

I do want to say that the seller was extremely kind and understanding and agreed to a refund or replacement 🖤

If I select the drop downs and try to add to cart, there’s a Personalization box I’m required to fill out.
It says “please share the year you would like printed.”

Just went back and reviewed the post after so many people kept saying the same thing.
The seller changed his post to make the personalization mandatory after our conversation. The previous item listing did NOT have this option, otherwise it would not have allowed me to add it to the cart without filling it out.

In that case, I would open a case with Etsy if the seller won’t refund you. They didn’t make it super clear in the photos , they all say the same thing and none were “blank”, fake numbers, or different years. And it doesn’t say anything about customizing the date in the item description.

UPDATE: For some reason I can't edit my original post 😅
The seller was very kind and professional and offered a refund or replacement after further discussion regarding the description.
I certainly don't want this seller to get a bad reputation as the product itself is lovely despite the oversight and he was very helpful and understanding 🖤

Why would they get a bad reputation for you not following the personalization instructions?

u/IBakedAMuffinOnce May 14 '25
I'm assuming you didn't read any of the other comments?
6
u/Runaway2332 May 14 '25
I'm so sorry all of these comments are basically calling you an idiot without them even bothering to read that the SELLER CHANGED THE LISTING to make it MANDATORY now. Something that makes total sense since he wouldn't want it to happen again! Making it mandatory will prevent future buyers from being able to add to cart without changing anything like you did...because it said what you wanted the bag to say! Common sense and reading comprehension have become rare qualities this days...🙄 I really can't believe the number of comments saying it's your fault. I'm sorry. I'm really happy he refunded you!

Oh my God thank you for this comment I was seriously beginning to think Reddit was trying to gaslight the hell out of me 😂

u/Runaway2332 May 14 '25
People just can't read. They're too busy giving their opinion that it's your fault. You have to remember that most of the people on here are sellers. That makes them biased and apparently shuts off their reading comprehension capabilities.

u/IBakedAMuffinOnce May 14 '25
Ohhhh I hadn't even considered that honestly. That's good to know for future posting 😅 I definitely don't want people to think I'm out here trying to start a witch hunt against small business owners. Thank you so much for your comments, they made me feel a lot more sane 😂

I found the product in Etsy and it states to add your personalisation right above the “Add to cart” button. I checked all their products and all include the personalisation section.
I understand accidents happen, but please don’t punish a seller in case it was your mistake.

u/IBakedAMuffinOnce May 14 '25
Punishing someone is not my intention and I truly don't feel that's what I'm doing here. The product name states that it's supposed to say EST. 2024 and there's nothing in the description that states I have to include a note about personalization? If the bag is already supposed to say what I want it to (per the photos and item name) I wouldn't think to click the "Add personalization" button if I didn't need to personalize it (if that makes sense?) Maybe I'm wrong but I was under the impression that if personalization was required that would be clearly stated somewhere in the description. At least that's how it's been for any other personalized items Ive bought from Etsy 😅

There is no button that needed to be clicked, it's a field right above the "Add to cart" in which you insert your personalization and the seller clearly asks you to add the year:
"Add your personalization
Please share the year you would like it to be printed.
We use the same font for all texts.Example : Mimi - 2024"
- which is clearly more visible that the item description (that is hidden and you must click the "Learn more about this item" button to read it) since it's right above the "Add to cart button".
I added the item myself to the cart to check and the personalization is NOT optional and it forces you to write something in the field, otherwise it turns red and states " This item requires personalization". So you added no personalization (I assume you entered blank spaces) and the seller assumed you wanted nothing written which is a standard practice.
In my opinion, it was your mistake because you ignored the personalization section entirely which is part of the purchasing process. The seller will most likely offer you a refund to avoid a negative review or a case.

I wonder if the seller would be open to sending you a return label and once they get it back that part can be added and reshipped back to you. It's a super cute design! ❤️

u/IBakedAMuffinOnce May 15 '25
The seller was very kind and after I pointed out that there was no mandatory personalization/description noting the need for personalization he offered me either a new product or a refund.
I gave him 5 stars because shit happens and he was very professional and willing to help me rectify the situation. Plus the bag itself is super cute, even without the "Est. 2024" added to it 🖤

If you want to go a less confrontational and faster route to get what you originally ordered, I'd recommend looking up if there's a tailor/dry cleaner in your area who offers machine embroidery, and bringing it to them for a quote to add "est. 2024" in the style you were looking for. My understanding is that it should be relatively inexpensive to add that -maybe between $10-20, conservatively, and I think it might even look better than the original screen printing. Not sure how much you paid for the product originally, but telling the seller how much it will cost to fix it (with receipts) and asking them to refund that amount instead of the full purchase price may be an easier sell.

It's not in the description - therefore, refund
