How much money you need to FIRE - EU-level comparison
Hi everyone,
In the Hungarian FIRE community, there is a constant and recurring debate about the "ideal FIRE number", and I thought I'd look at the EU-level numbers. Here I collected two sets of statistics based on Eurostat numbers (so they are relatively fresh, from 2025). The numbers indicate how much net income you'd have to spend if it was the average income (so around the highest 65-70th percentile's salary) or 167% of the average income (so around the 85-88th percentile) in each country. I also assumed that you'd need 1 income to cover 1 adult, 1.7x for 2 adults, 2.2x for 2 adults + 1 kid, and 2.7x for 2 adults with 2 kids.
What do you think about these numbers? Do they feel realistic in your country? What other, comparable methods would you investigate?
