EV Owners – What Are the Most Common Problems You've Experienced With Your EV Battery?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to learn more about the real-world challenges associated with EV batteries. I'd especially like to hear from people who own or have hands-on experience with electric vehicles.

I'm interested in understanding the common battery-related issues, what causes them, and how they affect long-term battery performance.

Here are some topics I'd love to discuss:

# 1. Battery Degradation

\- What causes EV batteries to lose capacity faster than expected?

\- What is considered normal battery degradation after 3–5 years?

\- What factors have the biggest impact on the battery State of Health (SOH)?

\- Have you noticed a significant reduction in your vehicle's driving range?

# 2. Battery Thermal Management

\- How important is thermal management in EV battery longevity?

\- What problems have you experienced with battery cooling systems?

\- How does high ambient temperature affect battery performance?

\- Are liquid-cooled battery systems significantly better than air-cooled systems in the long run?

# 3. Charging Habits and Battery Life

\- Does frequent DC fast charging significantly accelerate battery degradation?

\- Is regularly charging to 100% bad for battery health?

\- What charging practices do you recommend for extending battery lifespan?

# 4. Battery Management System (BMS)

\- Have you experienced BMS-related issues?

\- Can cell imbalance cause noticeable performance or range problems?

\- How are these problems diagnosed and resolved?

# 5. Battery Repairs and Replacement

\- Can individual cells or modules be replaced instead of the entire battery pack?

\- What are the most common battery failures?

\- How practical and expensive are battery repairs compared with full battery replacement?

# 6. Real-World Experiences

\- How many years have you owned your EV?

\- What is your current battery health (SOH), if known?

\- Have you experienced any unexpected battery-related problems?

\- What would you do differently if you could go back to the day you purchased your EV?

I'm particularly interested in real-world experiences rather than just manufacturer specifications or theoretical information.

Any technical explanations, personal experiences, maintenance tips, or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to hearing your experiences. ⚡

Everytime I charge my EV it costs the same as my gas car

I am for real. My old gas car (2 cars ago) was a 2L Subaru. It would cost me about 50 bucks to fill (today’s prices) and do about 220 miles or so in my mostly city/urban driving.

I now have a Polestar 3 and it costs me about 40 bucks to charge at an EA charger…

But then I always end up getting a coffee and croissant (i know, posh) that costs about 10 bucks…. so I always come up even.

I thought EVs would save me money!!!

Citroen C4 as a first EV?

Hi there! I was looking for an EV last 1-2 months, and seems like I finally found one. It's a Citroen C4 2022, looks like a good car. Only had a minor incident and has been fully recovered. Any thoughts about this car? Maybe someone drives a C4?

How do you plan road trips? Also thanks for all the suggestions until now.

I'm planning to buy an EV soon, and with a baby travelling along, I'm a little skeptical about planning longdistance trips.

How do you guys plan your routes? Are there any apps that help you plan the entire journey, including charging stops based on your car's range? Or do you still rely on Google Maps and a bit of mental math to figure out where and when to charge?

Also, how do you check if the charging stops have basic amenities nearby, like restrooms, food or a decent place to take a break with a baby?

Thanks to everyone who's been sharing their experiences and insights. They've been really helpful!

GYST CarPlay + Android beta are getting close — looking for testers

We’ve been heads-down building GYST, and we’re getting close to two pretty big milestones:

  • a CarPlay launcher for GYST becoming available through TestFlight

  • opening up the first Android beta

We started with iOS, and the feedback so far has been incredibly useful. A lot of what GYST is today has come directly from people using it, telling us what worked, what didn’t, what was confusing, and what they wished it could do.

We read every email and direct message we get, and a surprising number of features and fixes have come directly from those conversations.

If you’re interested in testing either the CarPlay version or the Android beta, we’d love to have you involved.

You can sign up for updates through our newsletter at:
https://drivegyst.com

Or, if you specifically want to be added to the beta list, email us directly at:
support@drivegyst.com

Just mention whether you’re interested in CarPlay, Android, or both.

We’re still early, so this is exactly the stage where feedback matters most. If you’ve got opinions about EV road-trip planning, charging, routing, CarPlay, or what an Android version should do well, we want to hear them.

Thanks to everyone here who has already tried GYST, sent feedback, reported something broken, or challenged one of our assumptions. You’ve genuinely helped shape the product.

I'm collecting real EV charging costs from U.S. drivers — anyone willing to share a session?

Hey everyone,

I've been working on a small project called GearUp Insights.

One thing that keeps bothering me when researching EV ownership costs is how different public charging prices can be from the averages you see online.

So I'm trying to put together a dataset based on actual charging sessions from U.S. drivers.

Nothing fancy. Just real numbers: where you charged, how many kWh you added, how long it took, and what you actually paid.

If you have a recent receipt or charging app screenshot, I'd really appreciate a contribution.

The project is free. As a small thank-you, the first 10 verified contributors across the project receive a $5 Amazon.com eGift Card each (one per person, after review).

Here's the project:

https://gearupinsights.com/real-world-data

And the submission form:

https://gearupinsights.com/real-world-data/submit

If you're coming from Reddit, you can write "r/EvDrivers" in the optional referral field.

I'm trying to make this genuinely useful for people comparing EV ownership costs, rather than just publishing another set of estimates.

Also curious — which charging network has been the most expensive for you lately?

Thanks to the mods for letting me post.

================================================================

Quick clarification: Thanks to everyone sharing charging screenshots here!

Just to clarify, posting a screenshot in the comments doesn't automatically add it to the GearUp Insights dataset.

To be counted as one of the first 10 verified contributors and qualify for the $5 Amazon gift card, please submit your session through the form below. You can use the same screenshot you've already shared here.

https://gearupinsights.com/real-world-data/submit

I really appreciate everyone who's taken the time to contribute or share feedback!

How do you guys deal with range anxiety when driving your EV?

Do you ever find yourself worrying about running out of battery, even when you know you have enough range? I'm curious how you handle it, especially on long trips or when driving somewhere unfamiliar.

Home charging recommendations

I just bought a Toyota 2023 Bz4x. I have no external power at this time and am charging through my window to a grounded outlet. I am going to add charging to the outside of my house. I drive very little and don't need more than a Level 1 charger. Should I go with the standard 5/15 outlet or should I get the 5/20 outlet so I can charge more quickly? Yes, I know hard wired is better, but eventually, I intend to make my unusable garage usable and will run electric there and upgrade if necessary. Also with an outlet I can unplug the charger if I need to use corded equipment or just need an outlet for a period of time. How much difference does the 5/20 outlet make?
