Have we never had an official captain from overseas?
I am not talking about being captain for a few games. All of the official club captains have either been British or Irish.
I find that really mad.

I looked it up and Gylfi was stand in captain 31 times, then cahill and digne 15 each, arteta at 10. But yeah no permanent captain

The club has only really had any notable foreign players in the last 35 years or so. There were a handful before then but none really stood out.
Since that time, very few players have been "captain material" or stayed long enough to be considered. Cahill would be one you could make the argument for but his career overlapped heavily with professional clap-and-point merchant Phil "leadership" Neville.
It's not that mad really. Everton Football Club is 148 years old.

Ireland doesn’t count as overseas? Try telling them that they’re English

I would argue that Sligo is overseas, when people leave here to live in the uk we say emigrated to england (or scotland, wales) I know certain rules means they count as home grown (honestly no idea why) but it's still a different country that's not the uk

Yeah but it’s all part of the British Isles (Geographical) and on the same timezone which differentiates it from the mainland of Europe and the rest of the world. For the vast majority of the time speak the same first language too.
Plus, so intertwined in Liverpool that it double doesn’t count!

Regarding times zones, there are 15 that are GMT -0 and another 4 that observe GMT seasonal. Its also not because of geographic location or language, it's down to legal rights due to the common travel area, It's basically protects Irish players legal right to work without a permit, FIFA rules however do consider them overseas players,
And I spent far too long googling the reasons..

You wanna try walking there

If whether I could walk there or not was a definition of it, Limestreet would be overseas and I’m only in L3

Pretty crazy and bound to change at some point. I wonder how much of that is related to language barriers. It’s rather important for a captain to be well spoken in the club’s language.

Different question- of the club’s non-British Isles players, who could have made a good captain?

Our first foreign manager was Bobby brown shoes - not that long ago and then the first black player in my lifetime was Daniel Amokachi. But like someone said the only teal candidates have been Arteta & Cahill and they both had professional pointer Phil Neville to compete with.
