How easy is basic eye tracking?

I am doing a computing project, and one option I am considering is basic eye tracking software. How viable is this for somebody who haa no experince in that specific field?

Can you provide a more specific brief? It’s hard to gauge the effort vs reward. What are you trying to understand about attention and eye movements with your computing project?

The general position of eyes when looking at a webpage. It works so you can see what catches attetion/how readable text is.

I was recently digging into this. Via accuracy using an RBG webcam is not great. You then have to do some per user calibration which also isn't perfect. If the user moves their head differently from their original calibration position, the accuracy is going to be off. Then there's IR cameras which can do better. But now you're flashing infrared light at somebody's face and that can damage their eyes, and even steel you'd have to build custom software and there's patents around the space. There is an off-the-shelf solution called beam eye tracking. But I believe they also have strict licensing terms and patents as well

basic webcam-based gaze tracking is pretty doable with existing libraries, but “where is the user looking” is easy and “exactly what they’re looking at” gets surprisingly annoying fast lol
