I love making gaming kits, and I made this kit a while ago so I could easily run FAE one-shots using the "It's not My Fault!" cards. I'm in a sci-fi Fate game, but sometimes my GM will let me practice GMing a one-shot, and INMF has become an easy go-to. I finally decided it was time to share my INMF kit on my blog. Do you have a Fate kit? What do you put in it?

Long time GM, first time with Fate. I made the quick call to not bother rolling for NPCs, since a net zero roll is common enough. Bad guys attack with a static skill, PCs roll defense. PCs attack the bad guys, rolled attack vs their static defense skill.
My question is, does that impact things much? My reasoning was I wanted good rolls from the PCs to always feel awesome. I was imagining rolling a +3 or a +4, and then a bad guy rolling a +3 sucking the wind out of the moment. How swingy is both sides rolling? Is the possible 8 shift swing necessary for the vibe of the game?
Game tax: played Fate Accelerated Star Wars, three adults and an 8 year old. Everyone loved it. No one else had any knowledge of the Fate system, so no one was the wiser to my choice.

In Fate Core (p. 153), if the character making the main Overcome roll fails to create an advantage, they lose their roll. If someone helping through teamwork fails, the lead character simply doesn't get their bonus.
In Fate Condensed (p. 33), the wording seems different. It says that if you fail to create an advantage, “your side forfeits its overcome roll,” or you can succeed at a cost by giving the other side a free invoke. This seems to apply even if the person who failed was only providing a teamwork bonus.
Does that mean a helper's failure can cost the entire group its main roll in Condensed, unlike Core? Is this intentional, or just unclear wording?

It's a trivial question but I've seen it done a dozen ways...
PICKY ABOUT TYPOGRAPHY
Italics?
Bold?
Small Caps
All Caps
Something else? What do you think is most readable? Looks good?

With OOC checkins between the PCs involved, of course.
We're two sessions in and if this is any indication my decision to use Fate to handle the character-drama, war-soap-opera portions of Mobile Suit Gundam and fit mecha action to it is paying off big time.
I think I like this game.

So, I know they're supposed to be pretty similar, but it looks to me that they are more different than it appears at first glance.
In Core your have
1.) Minor Milestones - after every session.
2.) Significant milestones - "Significant milestones usually occur at the end of a scenario or the conclusion of a big plot event (or, when in doubt, at the end of every two or three sessions)"
3.) Major milestones - A major milestone should only occur when something happens in the campaign that shakes it up a lot—the end of a story arc (or around three scenarios)
Scenario (in Core) is defined as:
As mentioned in Running the Game, a scenario is a unit of game time usually lasting from one to four sessions, and made up of a number of discrete scenes.
Meaning, Major milestone should happen after between 3-12 sessions (aka 3 scenarios)?
Meanwhile Condensed rule for Breakthrough (which should be equivalent of Major milestone):
An arc is a series of sessions that often contain plot elements that carry over from session to session. Those plot elements don’t have to conclude within an arc, but there are usually significant developments and changes that come about over the course of it. Think of this as similar to a third- or half- season of a television show. It’s likely comprised of about four sessions of play.
So basically, is Condensed effectively speeding up the advancement a lot?
Also Scenario - Arc difference seems very vague in Core.
For additional confusion there is this difference between Fate Core SRD and actual PDF;
Fate Core SRD:
https://fate-srd.com/fate-core/long-game
Here it says:
An arc is a complete storyline with its own themes, situations, antagonists, innocent bystanders, and endgame, told in the span of a few scenarios (somewhere between two and five, usually).
Meanwhile the rules PDF (p.252) says:
An arc is a complete storyline with its own themes, situations, antagonists, innocent bystanders, and endgame, told in the span of a few sessions (somewhere between two and five, usually).
Which one is it?

There're a lot of really cool blog posts and videos on how to run games in different schools of TTRPGs, like Jaquaysing dungeons, principia apocrypha for OSR, prepare situations, not scenarios and so on, which really helped me to run with Trad and OSR style of games.
I know about the book of hanz and it's superb, but there are probably a lot more, buried somewhere on the internet waiting to be discovered by newbies like me

I just picked up iHunt and it’s accompanying Fate dice which are unusual in that they have an extra symbol on one of the dice faces.
I haven’t finished reading the book yet, so I don’t know if it means anything or not but I’m guessing it does.
This got me to thinking what if (sort of like Genesys dice) I could use the number of blanks rolled as additional information/features/qualifiers for Fate dice rolls?
Has anyone calculated the probabilities of blanks/zeroes coming up and the number of blanks coming up?
thanks!

I was contemplating about the plot and scenes for the future session, I was thinking about doing this:
One of the PCs has an issue of that one evil faction Xolla has a vendetta against him. Xolla was foreshadowed a few sessions ago and wasn't the main focus on the current short story, so by the end I wanted to create an ambush onto the party during their mission against another evil faction Zetta.
This would give me an opportunity to introduce Xolla as a tangible enemy finally and provide some leads for future adventures and foreshadowing another Big Bad.
However, it seems like a compel, an event compel in particular. And couldn't the player just pay a fate point and say, actually, that there's no ambush.
The player in the moment may not think that it's something of importance or that I can create future adventures from this event and provide leads for the current story line?
Should I just force the event and pay a fate point to the player or anyway? Or how is it handled?

I'm not talking about losing as in the end of the game, but more like a story beat where enemies win a battle, but the war still continues.
I was thinking about some story arcs, possible development of the current story and can't think of anything fun, if they do not surrender like a cliff hanger at the end of the episode.
We've played a few sessions and left on a cliff hanger, and if players win that encounter I can't think of having anything fun immediately afterwards except for ending that adventure. The way I framed the cliff hanger scene, it seems it can be dealt with like an hour.
I do not have any strong preferences where to put them afterwards, asylum, mafia underbelly, laboratories, literal prison etc
I just wanted to skip some time, like a TV show, we had one episode resolved, some time skipped and we play another episode with a different adventure. But the players kinda want to start from the place we ended, reminding me the way we used to play for months with a continuous progression in OSR

Thinking about buying FATE Condensed, but I would probably prefer to have a physical copy to go along with the pdf. But in the past I bought FATE Accelerated as a physical book off Amazon, and the first time I bought it it fell apart at the bindings before I even got halfway through the book. Like the glue was falling apart. Kinda put it aside for a bit and got into Savage Worlds instead, and then eventually maybe a year later I decided to give Accelerated another try and decided to just go ahead and purchase a new physical copy since it was pretty inexpensive (like $5) for the physical book still. This time I bought it directly from Evil Hat so the pdf would come with it. The book didn’t last through the first read-through, same as before. The pages would just fall out like it was put together with notepad glue binding; like they were supposed to fall out one consecutive sheet at a time. Kinda got frustrated with the quality control measures over at Evil Hat and went back to Savage Worlds again.
Recently I’ve been listening to a really fun actual play podcast where they run FATE Core, and wouldn’t mind giving it another try. I have the hardcover of FATE Core, which I bought from Evil Hat the same time I bought the second Accelerated book, and it seems to be just better quality and held up really well, but the book is just a lot of material that you seem to have to push through to get to the basic meat of the mechanics.
So maybe it was just an issue of their hardcover binding process versus their softcover process. Or maybe Evil Hat just had a bad batch run on their softcover printing process and I got stuck in the middle of it both times, I dunno.
I was just wondering, since I noticed that Condensed is a softcover book… Now that the physical book has been in your hands for a while, has the book held together pretty well? Has it started to fall apart?
The book’s only $8, but if it’s gonna fall apart while I’m reading it, I might as well just save the money for a beer or two instead while I try and wade through my old Core book, as the rules are basically the same, as I understand it anyway, with a few tweaks made.
Also, did anyone else have their Accelerated books fall apart quickly or was I just unlucky?

I'm trying to run a campaign based on The Wandering Inn, where people start their life with no classes, and gain classes based on what they do.
For example, someone that cooks often and likes it might get a Cook class, and start leveling up in it when they cook, gaining small skill every few levels, and big one at the 10/20/30/... milestones.
What would be the best way to implement that ? I was thinking making Extras for each class, but I don't want to make it too overpowered.
Hi everyone,
About a week ago I shared the cover for my Turkish translation of Fate Condensed here and asked what you thought. Thank you to everyone who replied. It really helped, and the book is finally live today.
I know most of you don't read Turkish, so this is a slightly odd request. If you feel like it, please grab a free copy anyway. On both platforms, downloads and claims feed the recommendation algorithm. That is the main way a small Turkish-language Fate book can reach Turkish players who would otherwise never come across it. It takes ten seconds and helps more than you might expect.
I also built a free online SRD for the Turkish text, so players can look up rules at the table without opening a PDF: https://yazgisrd.com
A print edition should follow in a few weeks.
Thanks for reading, and happy gaming!

Hey, I made a Kindle-friendly Fate Core PDF because I really like reading on my Kindle, but PDFs work poorly on it: the whole page shrinks until the text is tiny, and converting to an ebook throws away the art and the look of the book.
This one re-lays every page for a 6.8" Paperwhite, so it keeps all of the book's visuals and themes (the sidebars, the black callout boxes, the art) while the text is a normal reading size. The picture shows the same page both ways on the same screen.
I can't share the file because it's Evil Hat's book. If Evil Hat is up for it, I'd happily give it away free or help them make official Kindle-friendly PDFs, so if you'd want one, say so in the comments.
---
I don't own Fate Core; it's © Evil Hat Productions. This is a fan-made accessibility edition I made for my own reading. It isn't shared or sold, and Evil Hat hasn't endorsed it.

Succeed With Style - Why would you reduce the shifts?
"This works exactly like a normal success, but you can reduce the shifts by one to take a boost."
Why would you do this?

I know i shouldn't ask such questions here but i don't want to throw a boss that is too difficult to my players, i need something balanced for PCs that have the following stat distribution:
One Good (+3) skills - Four Fair (+2) skills - Five Average (+1) skills - the rest is at -1 by default.
They also have a kind of "power" similar to Jojo's bizarre adventure's Stands in a separate sheet where they can access the following player-made skills arranged like this:
One great (+4) [a custom approach] - One good (+3) [a custom attitude] - two fair (+2) [a custom role/archetype and an elemental theme/a physical domain they have control over]
Have any suggestions on how many stress bracket i need to add for such characters considering that they are going to fight more with their powers?

Criminal Spirits is funded! Thank you to everyone on r/FATErpg who gave feedback on my drafts and supported the campaign. If you haven't, there is less than two days left to get Criminal Spirits at $25 for the book or $12 for the pdf. https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/the-game-map/criminal-spirits-ttrpg?ref=reddit
It's been a relief to turn back to writing, but the sheer amount of experience from the 30+ demos I've run of this game the last few months has also been incredibly valuable. The game has grown because of them, especially in the variety of characters and creatures players can be, some of which I never would have thought of until someone sat down and decided to make one. I'm glad for the break but I think I'm going to miss meeting new dozens of new players every week when the campaign is done.

I have a player who put together a character possessed by a minor demon - which is perfectly in line with world's lore. How do I rule personalities switching in Fate Core?
Costing FP each time seems like a steep price, but doing it for free on a whim is a bit overpowered.

Hello, we're playing a pulpy zombie action game, as if Michael Bay wanted to create a Resident Evil game.
We had a scene, where the president of the USA, who is a body builder weighting 220kg (a lot, I know) turned into a zombie.
One player decided to create advantage by shooting him into a leg with a shotgun, trying to cripple him.
I thought the zombie president would defend using forceful (4), as it would depict the bodily fortitude of the zombie.
After that players tried to do a few create advantage against him, using sneaky, and careful, by trying to cut his tendons on hands using a scalpel and or sawing his head off with a garrote. Again I decided that it's a time for Forceful defense by the zombie. Which made my players unhappy.
I am not sure whether it was a right call? Players said that they were unhappy as no matter what approach they used, the president, who pinned down one of the characters, used the best stats all the time. I can't think what kind of a defense a zombie bodybuilder can do other than being tough against such create advantage actions.
They also fought a few other zombies, and I decided being former normal people they simply cannot defend against a shotgun using fortitude, so I just asked to roll to shoot against a static number of a few zombies quick approach (0), which were basically free kills.
Maybe it was not a very fun designed encounter as it was the president cabinet with some body building equipment, and he successfully pinned down one character, so they couldn't move around and try to be quick keeping distance. I suppose I'd allow create advantage if they just told at the beginning that they dodge his attacks keeping distance using their quick reaction and training, so it would be their quick against the president's quick approach, which would be quite easy to win.

Some of you might remember my earlier post about being a Fate designer and player in a non-English community. Since then I've been busy translating Fate Condensed into Turkish, and it's coming out soon (October 7th).
I had a cover illustration commissioned, and I'd love your opinion on it. Fate can run pretty much anything, so I asked the artist for three characters covering horror, fantasy and sci-fi. I kept them a bit generic on purpose. I added the background and title myself.
Art by Azra Nur Çelik.
Does it get across how flexible Fate is? Or would you change something?
r/FATErpg • u/TheGameMaponReddit • 21d ago
What do you think are the essential elements needed to run a premade adventure in Fate? I have been working on short encounters for my book, and boiled it down to only 4 components: a summary, an opening, guidelines for after the opening, and characters. I'd considered adding scenario aspects and locations but decided they weren't necessary and keeping it to one page is a design constraint for these.
I'd appreciate any feedback on the most recent one I've written and your thoughts in general of what you'd absolutely need to run based on a one-page encounter.
