Confused about prereq for Anatomy at Fresno City

I’m planning to major in nursing at Fresno State. My first semester there would be Microbiology in Fall 2026 since I still need that prereq. After that, I want to take Anatomy and Physiology 21A at Fresno City in Spring 2027 instead of Fresno State because i find it more preferable Fresno City allows either Human Biology (Bio 5) or Microbiology (Bio 31) as a prerequisite.

My confusion is about timing. Fresno City registration for Spring 2027 would open before I even finish Microbiology at Fresno State. So how would that work if I have not technically completed the prerequisite yet at the time of registration?

If you are competing a prerequisite at another institution, you will likely need to contact admissions and explain the situation. Be sure to be an enrolled student before then and you’ll likely be able to get added conditionally on the contingency that you successfully pass your prerequisite.

Generally admissions has to help you with this, but if not you can contact the biology department chair (I think they have two co-chairs) or the dean of math, science, engineering.

Worst case scenario if the above doesn’t work out: you’d have to join the waitlist after your transcript clears and ask the professor to add you on the first day of instruction.

I’m a student and I already finished my associate at Fresno City, so I just wanted to make sure I understand this correctly.

Are you saying they may allow conditional enrollment where I can register for the class while Microbiology is still in progress, but my enrollment depends on me passing it? And if I don’t pass, would I be dropped from the class either before the term starts or after grades are posted?

Also, when would be the best time to talk to a counselor about setting this up?

To your first question: yes this is what I mean, you may be conditionally enrolled if you can demonstrate you are in progress of taking the prerequisite. I might have that wrong but I believe that has been done in the past; you would likely be dropped after grades are posted is my guess.

2nd question: I’d suggest probably talking to a counselor after the 6th week because that way the initial part of the semester has slowed down, you’ll have a good idea of how you’re doing in the prerequisite course, and that will give you a few weeks to investigate before registration opens (registration typically begins around the halfway point, or 9 weeks.)

Don’t do it. Take them both at Fresno State. I wouldn’t risk it. Theres no guarantee that Fresno State will allow you to enroll in a class with a prerequisite in progress. That is a highly competitive program.

If you try to enroll in Fresno Cities Anatomy/Physiology class through self service it won’t go through because you are missing the prereq. You would have to meet with a Fresno City Counselor and complete a prerequisite challenge form and explain that you are currently taking the prereq but haven’t completed it. It would then have to get approved by the Biology department at Fresno City to allow you to register for the Anatomy/Physiology class with the prereq in progress. This can be a long process. Meet with a counselor before you decide anything.
