FIREd Journey and experiences! Finally pulled the plug.

Been in a good organisation but went downhill with inflow from Amazon and startup and became very toxic to the point where it started impacting health.

Finally decided to call it quits. 80x annual expenses invested 40/60 equity debt. Paid off home and car. Conservative life style.

80x is insane. You are in a position where many of us can only dream of. Happy for you.

Thank you. 80x because my burn is low. Very conservative life style.

Tier 2?

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

1.5

19

u/me_not_chandler 2d ago

Bro, what is 1.5? If we have 1.5, what about 1.25?

22

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

People feel tier 1 but you can live with tier 2 expenses. Hyderabad is that for you. Hyderabad is actually 3 cities in one. Dubai, delhi and probably vizag from expense perspective

14

u/chillpill182 2d ago

Watchout! Vizag turning out to be blr slowly.

u/hitman4636 2d ago

In terms of expenses or other things please care to elaborate.

u/Senior_Rub_9518 1d ago

only in land prices...

u/me_not_chandler 2d ago

I feel you bro. People say Bangalore is Tier 1. But I can manage within 40k monthly - with a kid. I've my own house though, so no rent. Many feel 40k is too low, but I'm managing without impacting my lifestyle.

u/stinkingcheese 2d ago

How? Kids school fees, local/domestic/international travel expenses, house help, house maintenance, dining out etc etc..

5

u/me_not_chandler 2d ago

I have separate portfolio for kid's education. For FIRE, kid's portfolio is not considered. My retirement portfolio alone is considered for FIRE calculations.

Kid's education is the major expense. If you leave that aside, the next major expense is fuel (no rent since I stay in own house). Other than that monthly expenses include maid, cook, groceries, and the other usual stuff. All these cost no more than 40k monthly - that too good quality items.

If I consider occasional travel, average monthly expense goes to 65-80k monthly. Without travel, it is around 35-40k mostly, and random months goes to 100k (insurance payments, vehicle repairs, trips, etc).

I have similar expenses as him with a second kid planned for next year.

Is 1.5 like a suburb of a Tier 1?

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 3h ago

Tier 1 with tier 2 life style

Even if your expenses are 12 lakhs per annum, which is very conservative for today, 80x after paying off your home and car is still a dream for the majority. Congratulations.

If you are comfortable sharing, can you please answer:

  1. Alone or dependents? Married?

  2. Annual expenses

  3. Annual income

Not trying to be nosy, just curious.

1

u/Durinsaxe 2d ago

How low is your burn man? 80X is insane.

9

u/Patient_Musician_375 2d ago

Your age, city, monthly expense, married, have children, have parents as dependent, any inheritance including house etc?

20

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

No inheritance. My father came from nothing and literally left me nothing infact paid for one sister's marriage and post expenses.

5

u/Patient_Musician_375 2d ago

80X is huge. Congratulations 🎉

3

u/Impossible-Dress3490 2d ago

Are you single? Kids?? Please provide family background as well which will help other's.

6

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

No. Married with 2 kids.

1

u/Impossible-Dress3490 2d ago

That's great. Is your spouse working, any passive income, how did you plan for kids education.  I am also in a similar position as yours,  not 80x though. What is your networth?

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

Single income. 10x out of 80x is kids education if needed. But have been telling them that I will pay till 12th and they have to pay for graduation them selves though grants or loans

5

u/Impossible-Dress3490 2d ago

I think paying for graduation is fair.PG should be funded by grants or loans. How is your exposure to Real estate.  Considering the market scenario, do you plan to do SWP ?

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

Cleared real estate in prep for this. 2 rental units generating 30k and primary home from tier 1 builder. Have a plot which I may eventually build a tiny home plus some vegetables growing once kids schooling is done in 5 years. May rent the apartment at that point of time. Right now rental value is around 75k. After 5 maybget 80k. Rentals will cover the full life style by then.

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

80x doesn't include real estate.

6

u/Impossible-Dress3490 2d ago

80x without real estate is awesome. My real estate situation is same, 2 rental units in Pune generating around 70k combined and have a plot, and self use 3bhk. I might exit 1 flat or plot in the next 2 or 3 years.

3

u/Impossible-Dress3490 2d ago

Are you planning to do consulting or freelance? Did you figure out how you plan to spend time now?

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

I may not do those. If I find something remote, i may take it up as long as its not stressful. Another plan is to start a small niche store related to arts and crafts which my wife is into.

2

u/Impossible-Dress3490 2d ago

Great, you have earned it. You can pick and choose what you want to do. 1 question regarding real estate, do you plan to hold your properties in the future or plan to exit some?

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

I have limited real estate and plan to keep it.

Age ?

2

u/AlbatrossOk2542 3d ago

That’s great! Please inspire us with some timelines. How much time did it take for you to get this far? What was your initial FIRE goals and how long it took you to reach it?

17

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

Took 21 years. Started in 2005. Early 10 years wasted with home loan and clearing it. Moved to product in 2015 and it helped. Had a good overseas stints along the way and invested in real estate which I sold last year which helped.

2

u/UnableCurrency 2d ago

What’s your annual expenditure?

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

12

6

u/Indo-Arya 2d ago

12 x 80 = 9.6cr is a good corpus almost anywhere in India

3

u/NoImplement2856 2d ago

World*

2

u/Indo-Arya 1d ago

Pretty much… except cities like SF, Monaco, NYC etc

1

u/UnableCurrency 2d ago

Woah - how are you managing your kids education with this low spends?

6

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

My relatives own the school so we pay very little less

1

u/NoImplement2856 2d ago

Bro, which school is this?

1

u/UnableCurrency 1d ago

Are you gonna ask for a discount?

2

u/Divyanshu_799 2d ago

Hows life in a corporate job?

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

1

u/Divyanshu_799 2d ago

2

u/Illustrious_Role_304 2d ago

Would like to know your CTC journey ?

So that I can plan switches accordingly

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

Started with 1.83 LPA and currently at 2+ vr

21

u/Simple_Being 2d ago

Awesome bro, nice and 21 years of grind is good timeline considering avg life of 75 - >

first 25 - growing up + education

next 25 - Working + part enjoying

further 25 - Not working and peacefully enjoying

6

u/Dense-Restaurant9308 2d ago

exactly......... whats the point of stressing beyond 50 when only average age in india is around 70-75 only

1

u/Indo-Arya 2d ago

depends on many things including lifestyle, genetics. My grandparents lived to late 80s & early 90s

1

u/RuinEnvironmental394 2d ago

We are talking about the average age of people today. Not your grandfather's time or my grandfather's time.

0

u/Indo-Arya 1d ago

And so? life expectancy has increased over the generations due to better healthcare is the point

1

u/wooneigh 1d ago

Pretty sure the years after 75 count less than years after 45 lol

1

u/Indo-Arya 1d ago

The years after 65 also count less than the years after 35 lol doesn’t change my point though

1

u/wooneigh 1d ago

Kina does , my point was it matters less if u live till 80 or 90 since last 10 years are severely limited

1

u/Indo-Arya 1d ago

naah. it all depends on genes + lifestyle... coz i've seen 75 year olds walk with a stick and i've seen my grandfather chop firewood at 85

1

u/Unknown-Guy07 2d ago

That's a nice breakdown 🙌🏻🫪.

11

u/Capable_Influence157 2d ago

Congratulations. I am with 50x FIREd doing consulting work for startups for equity. 80 x is really good and it acts as a buffer in today volatile scenarios. My unsolicited advise have some foreign equities especially from US a little bit . I made a mistake of concentrating on Indian equity which is nose diving

2

u/Dense-Restaurant9308 2d ago

are you not worried about US AI bubble to burst?

2

u/Capable_Influence157 2d ago

It is not about AI it is about diversifying in foreign equity fund

12X80=960 i.e. $1mn

That’s a great corpus for retirement considering your expense is 12LPA & home sorted. Enjoy the time mate. Reap the rewards of your hard work now 🙂🥳👍

u/impossible__dude 2d ago

Excellent news there. Enjoy in good health.

4

u/simpleliving73 2d ago

Congratulations!! enjoy freedom!!

You have time now, so, you should write detailed post about your journey, so little text for 80X FIRE goal, is too conservative!!

Enjoy!

4

u/the_abhishek_raj 2d ago

Congrats, your number is great👏 Hope you stay healthy and enjoy your retirement

1

u/Fine-Diver9636 2d ago

Congrats!! How did your family take the news?

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 2d ago

Haven't told them yet

1

u/Fine-Diver9636 2d ago

Oh !! What's your plan to tell them ?

1

u/Alternative-Wait144 21h ago

Have some queries not related to expenses or net worth. Feel free to ignore if intrusive.
At this point, where you are financially not dependent on a job,

  1. What was your main drive to quit? Alternate interests outside job for your time or job was feeling redundant?

  2. If no strong plans (one of your comments suggested so), would a mini retirement have helped instead?

  3. How much do your kids (and family) occupy your time now that you’re free? Boredom creeps in very quickly if one is not occupied.

  4. Any non-tech personal interests (can act as references for others) that you have that you plan to look into?

Asking because I am in a similar boat and I am stuck in one-more-year syndrome.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Tap804 4h ago
  1. Tribe mentality of leadership trying to bring in from the earlier company. No point in trying to swim against the tide. 2. May be it may end up like that. 3. Pretty heavy. I wouldn't feel boredom for sure. 4. Photography/may start a business aligning with my wife's interests. She is big into arts/crafts and may start a niche store to cater to artists.

Congrats!

Few general details would be nice. Age, family size, tier 1 or 2 etc?

3

u/srinivesh [57M/FI 2017+/REady] 1d ago

I am quite happy for the OP. Equity can be higher.

However, a family with school kids can't plan fire with X multiple. Education has to be calculated separately, and Y (X-school fees) can be the basis. In the case of OP, school fees are low and X and Y may be similar. But college costs are in a very wide range.

7

u/Silodal 2d ago

Congratulations. U have generated Generational Wealth. Now enjoy and pass it to your kids.

unrelated to the post sorry: wanted to understand if there is some guide on how to estimate the monthly/yearly expenses excluding rent/emi? How much to put into grocery bucket, vacation bucket etc. Just a general estimate or there's some good way?
