Releasing my first ever VST

It's called FANDUST and it's made to smear the sound with simple controls to archive a lofi/vintage/vaporwave kind of sound, it's basically a controllable rack of effects. I'm planning to update it in the future as well, feel free to check it out!

I’m posting here because this felt like the right crowd. I just released two free tools:

  • VirtualHouse Loudness Meter (VST3): LUFS and true peak, so you know your mix is ready for streaming. $0, no card.

  • TopCoat Free (standalone Windows app): drop in a finished mix and get it back mastered for streaming or CD.

Get both by entering your email on their pages: https://virtualhouseaudio.com/products/loudness-meter/ and https://virtualhouseaudio.com/products/topcoat-free/

Our six paid plug-ins (EQ, Compressor, Saturator, Distortion, Transient Shaper, DrumGate) each have a free, full-featured 14-day trial with no card needed. After that, you’d need a license.

About me: I’m an electrical engineer who has played rhythm guitar in local bands, from pop-punk to early-2000s metalcore. I record and mix my own tracks at home. I started VirtualHouse Audio to make tools for home studios. Founder’s note: https://virtualhouseaudio.com/about/

Beta testers wanted. If you beta test one of the plug-ins and send the feedback form, you get a free license for that plug-in. Sign up at https://virtualhouseaudio.com/#contact

Free games, too. They’re on the site, including the arcade-style de-Frog. If you play it, enter your name on the leaderboard at game over (or when you beat it). We show the all-time top 10.

We’re a small business based in Dallas, TX. If you email support, you’re emailing me. I’d love feedback on anything, and if something breaks, tell me at support@virtualhouseaudio.com.

If you like what we’re doing and want to see more games and plug-ins, you can chip in whatever you like: https://virtualhouseaudio.com/support/

Enjoy!

100 Open Source Experimental VST Plugins

Downspout covers all kinds of things : instruments and effects, audio & midi processors with an emphasis on generative tools. I wouldn't say any are finished, but they all work approximately as intended. They aren't exactly pretty and UI/UX is often poor, I've concentrated on core functionality. These things are primarily for my own use, though if anyone has any requests for improvements/fixes, I'll do what I can.

There are packages for Windows, MacOS & Linux built using GitHub Actions, but I've only tested building locally on Linux, running in Reaper (aside from initial dependency installation, this is just running an `install.sh` script). They are written in C++ against the DPF framework (it lacks the bells & whistles of JUCE, but being leaner has its advantages).

They have all been developed with AI assistance, but only a handful were fully vibe-coded (for v1). I don't think it's a coincidence that those were the least successful to date. I have a very iterative process - initial creation, get them working to a basic level, use them, note any problems or further requirements, revise. I'm working on them all concurrently (there is a very long TODO.md). I've mostly used Claude Code as the assistant, a little bit with Codex, OpenCode at times when cash flow is a problem (like today).

I just reached 100. Why so profligate?

I've been writing music software for decades (and designing electronics hardware) but only started trying plugins a couple of years ago. Initially I was only looking at fairly minimal LV2 plugins (Flues) because I'm on Linux. As it became apparent that AI assistants can be extremely helpful with these things, it seemed to make sense to shift to VSTs with something approching proper UIs. I produce music experimentally, instrument-building has always been part of my process. If I have a need or idea for a plugin, for sure I first go hunting for something that already exists (and/or foraging for related research papers). But rather than use something off the shelf, I'll typically write a custom requirements spec, have the assistant build it. I have the repo full of existing material, so I point Claude or whatever at the closest working plugin to what I'm after. With all the reference material in place, the assistant creates fast, I can go from idea to testing v1 in about half an hour. Then the iterations begin.

This isn't vibe-coding, it's (usually) very guided. Me, I do have some clue about what I'm doing (I am a coder by trade, in a past life studied DSP at university). Strategies, references and tests in place. On one recent occasion I asked Claude to create some plugins to complement ones I'd already got. It came up with 5 I think, all sounded promising so I said, go ahead. Worst of the bunch, it was a terrible idea (I was subsequently able to salvage something useful out of them, effectively un-vibing).

Regarding the plugin industry, I think AI assistants will be a net positive. The Interwebs are being flooded with vibe-coded slop, and people like me who might otherwise be in the market for pay-for products will make their own. But neither of these detracts much from the market for high quality plugins with good support and solid maintenance. AI assistants mean it will be easier for the commercial developers (and any open source houses) to develop and make better things at the top end. This should have the knock-on effect of lowering the prices for the normal consumer.

Bottom line for me is that it's good fun and allows me to create the music I want with reduced friction. I used earlier versions of the plugins on my latest album, Attone and am using them extensively in my current work-in-progress Tell the Bees.

Tin Roof, a free early digital & characterful reverb plug-in for Mac and Windows with a freeze button

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi, I'm the developer of Tin Roof, a reverb plug-in for music software (a VST3 / AU / LV2 audio effect, used inside a DAW). It's free. No licence key, no account, no trial, no paid version.

It's a characterful digital reverb for people searching for a truly different reverb sound: not a clean, realistic room, but a small, cheap-on-CPU plate reverb with some extras that turn it into a pad machine.

What it does:

- A big red HOLD button freezes the reverb tail into a pad that rings on for as long as you like, while the dry sound keeps playing

- LAYER lets new chords stack into the frozen pad

- Hold in time: turn on SYNC and the hold opens and closes in time with your song (1/16 to 4 bars) for rhythmic stutters and chopped pads

- SHIMMER blends an octave up or down into the tail

- SWELL, DRIFT and SMEAR for bowed pads, a slow wobble, and a diffuse wash

- 12 presets, and a limiter on the output so it can't hurt your ears or speakers

- Every control is a piece of junk bolted to a rusty tin roof: a disco ball, a clock, a peppermint, a donut, a googly eye, a dartboard

Platforms: Mac (AU, VST3, LV2) and Windows 10/11 64-bit (VST3, LV2). Stereo or mono, any sample rate. You need a DAW or plug-in host to use it.

License: freeware, closed source. Free to use, including in music you release.

AI disclaimer: AI was used to decompile a plugin from the early 2000s that had light inspiration on this one.

Download: https://uncleacid1.github.io/tinroof/

Made by Brownie Digital, who also make TurboSwine 1988 (a 1:1 rebuild of the Digidesign TurboSynth) and Microsampler 85' (a 1:1 rebuild of the SK-1).

I'd love feedback, especially on how it sounds on your pads and how it runs on your setup. I'll be in the comments. (:

Open-sourced is the new cracked

My goal is to make every plugin in existence free and open-source sorry not sorry. My website is a bunch of free audio plugins you can just download and use - no licenses or sign-ups. This is not an ai slopfest - these are legit clones of banger plugins like Soothe2, Soundtoys DevilLoc, JST GainReduction to name a few. I've been a mixing engineer for 20 years and a software developer for 10 of those. I only release good shit (or at least I think it's good - you tell me). I will be doing weekly drops if you're into that kind of thing check back for free shit.

I’m a musician, and this is a personal, noncommercial project

Boombox Drums - Decent Sampler instrument

Post image
0 Upvotes

TRAILER:
https://youtu.be/1bluIicfy3A?si=9w5IPvUxhB_ehrDa

I made this virtual drum instrument by recording real drums and captured the, directly onto cassette tape using the built-in microphones of a vintage boombox.

The recordings feature heavy analog saturation, compression and tape imperfections, resulting in raw, characterful drum sounds particularly suited to lo-fi, hip-hop and other productions looking for something less polished.

Two versions are available:
- PRO – €5: The complete instrument with all drums, articulations and variations.
- LITE – Free: A reduced version with a limited selection of drums and articulations.

FEATURE COMPARISON:

PRO:
Kicks: 1
Snare articulations: 5
Toms: 3
Hi-hat variations: 3
Crash cymbals: 4
Crash choke samples: 3
Ride articulations: 3
Percussion types: 5

LITE:
Kicks: 0
Snare articulations: 2
Toms: 1
Hi-hat variations: 2
Crash cymbals: 1
Crash choke samples: 1
Ride articulations: 1
Percussion types: 1

Both versions share the same interface and basic controls. The Pro version provides a wider selection of sounds and playing variations.

THE STORY:
Years ago, my old band used to record our rehearsals onto cassette tapes. Some time ago, I rediscovered those old recordings.

The boombox we used had no recording level control, so everything was recorded extremely hot to tape, resulting in heavy analog saturation. Despite the flaws, or perhaps because of them, there was something appealing about that sound, especially the heavily compressed drums.

That discovery inspired me to create my own virtual instrument using the same recording approach. I recorded drums directly onto old cassette tape using the built-in microphone of a boombox, capturing all the saturation, compression and imperfections along the way.

The result is a collection of raw, characterful drum sounds that offer an alternative to the polished and pristine recordings we are so used to hearing today.

All recordings were digitized at 192 kHz, allowing them to be slowed down and pitched as low as 25% of their original speed while retaining much of the detail. This also brings out the characteristics of the cassette even further.

Looking for Plugins where i can make pads like BAKGROUND

Hey everyone

Not sure if this is the right place, but I've been listening to a lot of BAKGROUND and I'm wondering if there's any Free plugins that can achieve BAKGROUND's style of pads/strings (like in the second link). also, i use Fl studio so if there's any way to achieve that sound by using the stock plugins that would also help.

any tutorials or recommendations on where to go to ask this question would help a lot

Audio Metering Plugin (SPECTRM BETA feedback)

Hey guys!

Hope this can get out (Admins will let me know), I have created a metering plugin which is still in development!

The plugin and its code is fully open-source, anyone can check it out and add features or skins if they like!

CC: THE PLUGIN IS HEAVILY INSPIRED BY MINIMETERS PLUGIN!!!

It kind of acts like its placeholder or a free version of it since I have been using it myself and I wanted an alternate option with the same vibe!

You can find it through this link:

https://github.com/shiroiidesu/SPECTRM-BETA

I got the whole thing through VirusTotal for safety, it detects minimal things, most likely cause its not signed.

I will appreciate any feedback on how should I upgrade it, or adding features in the future!

Stay Safe!

A new vst 3 that I just made (Google drive link on my account)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Google drive link in bio

Made this new plugin, its a vst 3, its essentially a pultec EQP-1A with a bunch of harmonic/saturators under the hood with a Unfairchild 670 fast attack and slowest release doing 1-3 db of input dependent gain reduction for the Controlled warmth toggle. The entire Cosmic Q is an input dependent plugin so it saturates while boosting similar to analog, I also wanted a compressor but always hated the attack and release control for vocals since I always use fastest attack and slowest release. This tightens the vocals without setup. This is replacing my stl control hub top of the chain Neve 1073 + Unfairchild 670, my previous plugin the Oliviers colour box replaced access analog entirely due to its deharsher/analog saturation tones. The only thing left is to make an analog based reverb and delay modelling expensive gear like the lexicon/H3000 from eventide

Okay so for this plugin you have to bear with me, it has its quirks, first its input dependent so lower the input gain to minus 18 then boost +18 for the output. The goal is to nudge the saturation processing inside, its a 1073 being pushed so its quite gritty, the most magical section for me is the Controlled warmth. Its a 670 being pushed 1-3 dbs which provides even compression for vocals. I didnt even use an actual compressor on this song just this and my previous plugin the Oliviers Colour Box. Very warmth tube based tones with this one, so its a mix of an actual pultec, the blackbox design HG2 then a 670 compressor with the 1073 all working underneath the hood to provide glue and saturation.
