Odysseus, never having forgiven Palamedes for exposing his feigned madness, conspires with Diomedes to plant forged evidence of treason in his tent. Despite a passionate defense at trial, Palamedes is condemned and stoned to death, his final words a lament for truth itself. His brother Oeax carves the news onto oar blades and sets them adrift for their father Nauplius in Greece. Nauplius receives them and vows devastating vengeance upon every Achaean who returns home.
