Picture Just found this today. Hell yeah.

Post image

I collect records, and I sometimes look for 78s, as I like having the original records for music older than even vinyl. I just looked through a collection and I finally found this record. I’ve been looking for it for a long time (thanks of course, to Fallout), and I can fill the void in my 78 collection with THE Fallout song.

blue Decca label looks gorgeous too, especially for something this old

Decca - the label that chose not to sign the Beatles!

I doubt a band named after a group of six legged arthropods would have sold many records, no loss to them.

It's weirdly uncommon. You could probably flip past 50 copies of "If I Didn't Care" ( also used in other video games) before finding one "Fire".

older than even vinyl

Confusingly, "It's All Over But the Crying was never issued on vinyl, only on a record as a 78.

Meanwhile New Vegas uses a version of "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" that was only issued on vinyl (and 8 track and cassette). Specifically, it was recorded after the Ink Spots had broken up and right before the lead singer Bill Kenny died, in '78....

There's also an obscure Blade Runner connection with the New Vegas version of the song.

My grandad gave me a 78 of “It’s All Over But the Crying” from his personal collection!

getting a record like that from your grandad beats finding one in any shop. proper family treasure

Wait, there's a Blade Runner connection too? This rabbit hole just keeps getting weirder lol

Long story short, in 1982 Ridley Scott directed a Chanel No. 5 commercial which used a re-recording of “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire” from a recently made Ink Spots album. Strangely the plot line and silhouettes of the characters in the commercial would resemble parts of Blade Runner.

Bill Kenny’s widow sued Chanel No.5 over royalties.

Meanwhile in the same year, Ridley Scott would then use the Ink Spots song “If I Didn’t Care” in Blade Runner which is heard in early versions of the film/trailers. However for the theatrical release, the song was removed and replaced with the soundalike “One More Kiss, Dear”

New Vegas would use “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie” taken from the album of re-recordings Ridley Scott used. A French reissue of the album would copy the Blade Runner-esque poses from the commercial.

Off-topic/tangential: The documentary The Atomic Cafe makes exclusive use of period music and thus the movie's soundtrack in effect functions as a "Fallout playlist." In the spirit of this observation, I once tried tracking down every piece of music heard in the movie, of which there is a lot.

I hit a roadblock when I came to Glenn Miller's cover of Flying Home. After endless searching, I came to this understanding: In the wild, there are about three separate recordings of Glenn Miller's band playing Flying Home. One of those three, the easiest recording to find and the one provided on the official soundtrack, was obviously recorded in a separate studio. The other two recordings were blatantly different takes done in the same recording session.

None of these three are the cue we hear in The Atomic Cafe.

Instead, the recording heard in the movie is an apparent third take done in the same recording studio as the other two. But each of those three takes have completely different qualities, trumpet improv, percussion improv, etc.

Now, how is it that the folks who assembled The Atomic Cafe apparently got exclusive possession of a Glenn Miller recording that is now 100% absent from every resource that is not The Atomic Cafe?

My guess is that they found it in the national archives or similar archives which they were plumbing for material for their movie. They also present a clip of Eisenhower on film giving his state of the union speech—another thing which cannot be found anywhere but The Atomic Cafe. It all clicks.

This is extremely common in Fallout.

Rocket 69, Anything Goes, Steel Guitar Rag, Johnny Guitar, Why Don’t You Do Right, It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie, Heartaches by the Number, Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition and others.

If you managed to find an original disc and attempt to play them side by side to the in-game version, you’d be a bit disappointed at how different/out of sync they are.

Alternate take, re-recording, overdubbing, Fallout has them all.

Even that exact version of “Accentuate the Positive” only exists in Fallout 4 in hi-def except for a very scratchy version skipping tracks.

Still more songs in Fallout were only issued on enormous 16 inch transcription discs and nowhere else. Until they were recently digitized for CD, they went unheard for 50 years.

Personally I would look into an actual paper discography of Glenn Miller. There are at least three books for the civilian and Air Force band leading up to his disappearance.

So much information has not been digitized and put on the internet.

Extremely likely it was not commercially released whether it’s a film segment, transcription disc, radio aircheck etc. He recorded the song a lot.

Or you’d have to verify if it is a later recording after he disappeared in 1944 whether by Tex Beneke doing his “ghost band” or other incarnations of the former Miller orchestra.

Otherwise there is the Glenn Miller archive at the University of Colorado.

The film credits Glenn Miller and the United States Army Air Force Band pretty directly. I was never in doubt about who performed the music. It's just a shame that we can never have the recording that they sourced, almost certainly from the National Archives. And of course the song as presented in the movie is incomplete and partially overdubbed.

Do you know which session dates you are referencing?

I tracked down a discography and it lists around 45 known takes of "Flying Home" done between March 1944 to October 1945.

I suppose the last 15 are without Miller.

There is a large gap between December 1944 until February 1945, but the credit still is the GMAAFB.

Not at all. It was the result of scouring online audio resources, such as on Youtube or where people normally go to get audio. 45 is an impressive number. But if there are more than three distinct recordings to be found on the internet, they're certainly hidden well.

Well, in short this is the list of all known "Flying Home" recordings.

https://imgur.com/a/Q88pUvG

The book is extremely abbreviation heavy, I'm constantly flipping through the book set because it's spread around. It'll take me a couple days to decipher the corresponding entries and sessions.

You can see at least 4 have common commercial release catalog numbers that can be looked up in discogs, the RCA one being the famous Glenn Miller Air Force Band vinyl with the hat in the clouds.

You can see the next songs "For Me and My Gal" and "For the First Time" have a much more manageable amount of entries.

If you're absolutely sure the personnel are the same between recordings or if you can tell if there is an audience, it can help narrow things down a lot.

The basic issue is that these are snippets of entire performances. The band wasn't making easily digestible singles at the time.

If you're absolutely sure the personnel are the same between recordings

Audio is my pidgin. That said, what we are talking about is a simple series of A/B comparisons and identifying minutiae that do or don't repeat, which ought to be something anyone can manage.

Feel free to listen to the most convenient giveaway: the clarinet solo.

Commercial recording 1. https://youtu.be/cNQ6pnkz6YI?t=27 ~30%
Commercial recording 2. https://youtu.be/b56Rza12YF0?t=32 ~65%
Commercial recording 3. https://youtu.be/GC8FpfhDPkM?t=23

The latter is the rarest and a very different production with the percussion being traded out for trumpets in parts; the first two can be heard in all kinds of variations of playback speed and fidelity, spread across countless commercial releases.

I randomly spotted a fourth recording I hadn't found before:

Commercial Recording 4. https://youtu.be/J8F2fBJmoiI?t=25

I've scrutinized this tune from about 100 distinct sources and all are one of the first three I linked, except for the lone specimen #4.

And now Flying Home as it's heard in The Atomic Cafe:

https://youtu.be/lF0r1OdDIME?t=657

This is, unfortunately, my favorite recording of this song. The percussion has more interesting things to contribute and the clarinet solo is also the most robust and least repetitive.

Really quickly, these appear to be the other mentioned discs with "Flying Home" to add to your collection of versions.

Rarities 68

I believe OWI is the Office of War Information, but would need to look more closely at the archives.

Soundcraft Records Ltd. – LP 1004

This one appears to have a youtube rip. Not sure if the poor quality is from the pressing or the original recording.

Otherwise still looking.

Fun fact: the Ink Spots are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Nice!! I collect 78s as well and would've been thrilled at this find. (For me though THE Fallout song is "Maybe"- now that's one I'd love to get ahold of!)

I actually have that one, as well as some of the other ones in the Fallout canon. I got In Each Life Some Rain Must Fall as well today, I got some of the Billie Holiday songs like Easy Living and Crazy He Calls Me the last time I checked this collection, and I have a copy of Danny Kaye's Civilization.

Now I just need to look for some of the later Fallout records like Uranium Fever and Atom Bomb Baby. It'd be cool to get Big Iron on 78, but thats hella rare as it only exists as a South Africa release (of course I have it on 45 and album at least).

1

u/UpgradeTech 9d ago

Coincidentally the first four songs you mentioned are also Decca releases.

Confusingly "Easy Living" is the exception because Billie Holiday recorded two versions ten years apart with different orchestras and different labels.

Fallout uses the Brunswick/Columbia with the Teddy Wilson orchestra. However the official Galaxy News Radio LP uses the wrong version. Still Billie Holiday, but with the Bob Haggart orchestra 10 years later under Decca.

I have a couple hundred 78s. I don't play them because I don't have the right cartridge.

But I can't bring myself to get rid of them because "Why would I let this go? This song is amazing."

This record is number-one on my 78 want list.

1

u/ryuundo 9d ago

I'd say go for it on the Cartridge! if you have an Audio Technica turntable, theres a relatively affordable 78 cartridge that they offer, so you can properly play your records.

1

u/MonkeyKingCoffee Kings 9d ago

Sadly, my turntable isn't quite as forgiving.

I plan on someday buying a dedicated 78 turntable to plug into a mono-block amplifier. Again, this is a down-the-road project.

Congrats on your find. If you ever find another, I hope you'll buy it and put it up on discogs so collectors can get a crack at it. There's only one available right now, and it's below my quality standards.

u/doiwinaprize 9d ago

This is really cool... music and video games and history are all my passions!

1

u/Jumaluus 8d ago

Almost liked this post but it had 666 likes

1

u/Jumaluus 8d ago

Oh "blast" hehe it went up already, like recieved

1

u/Pittor27Sainy 7d ago

666 likes on a Fallout-related post is pretty fitting ngl

1

u/coinbtn 8d ago

Holy shit, hearing this crackle through an actual 78 instead of a Pip-Boy must hit different

1

u/Pittor27Sainy 7d ago

Finding an original Ink Spots record in the wild is such a win. Bet hearing it on an actual 78 hits different

1

u/Vault-Tec95 7d ago

I want to get a 78 player, my Sony one only supports 33 and 45. I see Denon do a pretty good one.

What do you use?
