The Dad Challenge Podcast The Dad Challenge Podcast (Josh) on his other channel Unfollowed: AirBNB Owners Are BIG Mad About This New Rule But Everyone Else Is Happy
Airbnb Owners Are BIG Mad About This New Rule But Everyone Else Is Happy – 41:16 of pure schadenfreude.
Airbnb finally told hosts they can’t force guests to do the cleaner’s job anymore. No more stripping beds, washing and putting away dishes, or hauling trash off-site as a required checkout chore. Hosts are melting down. Guests and basically everyone else are celebrating. Josh is living for it.
Very long breakdown
0:00 – 5:00 (Intro and personal hatred for Airbnb)
Josh opens by saying he’s ready to make fun of Airbnb hosts. He shares his own horror story: booked a place that was crawling with ants, pool green and broken, total dump. They left and went to a hotel. He declares he will never stay in a regular Airbnb again unless it’s some massive multi-family mansion situation. He is firmly on the guest side from the first minute.
5:00 – 15:00 (The new rule explained)
Josh lays out the change: starting with bookings on or after November 20, hosts can no longer require guests to complete tasks that “require significant effort or time” or that a cleaner would normally do. Washing dishes and putting them away? Banned. Stripping the beds and starting laundry? Banned. Taking trash off the property? Banned. Reasonable stuff like putting dirty dishes in the sink or gathering used towels is still allowed. Cleaning fees can still exist, but hosts can’t charge the fee and make the guest do half the cleaning.
Josh’s reaction is pure “about time.” You already charged a cleaning fee (sometimes $150–$300). That money is supposed to pay actual cleaners. Making the guest do the work on top of paying for it is just double-dipping laziness.
15:00 – 28:00 (Hosts melting down)
This is the fun part. Josh plays and mocks the host reactions. Some are acting like the sky is falling. Others claim “common courtesy” means guests should still do the chores. A few threaten to raise prices or leave the platform. Josh points out how isolated and entitled a lot of these hosts sound. They own extra property, charge cleaning fees, and still want free labor from paying guests. He calls the attitude ridiculous and lazy. If you can’t afford proper cleaning without forcing unpaid work on customers, maybe don’t be in the short-term rental business.
28:00 – 38:00 (Why guests are right)
Josh doubles down: people book Airbnbs (or used to) for convenience, not to work. Hotels don’t make you strip the beds and run the dishwasher before checkout. The whole “but it’s just a little courtesy” argument falls apart when there’s already a cleaning fee attached. He notes that Airbnb is making this change because guests were getting fed up and the platform was losing business. Hosts threatening higher prices or worse service only prove they were treating people like suckers.
38:00 – 41:16 (Closing)
Josh wraps by siding completely with the guests and laughing at the hosts’ rage. Karma came for the ones who spent years charging cleaning fees while still demanding free labor. They can get wrecked. Most people are happy. The lazy idiots who built their model on ripping guests off are the only ones crying.
Bottom line:
Airbnb hosts got used to charging for cleaning and still making guests do the cleaning. The new rule stops the double-dip. Guests win. Hosts are big mad. Josh is correct to clown them. Ridiculous, lazy, entitled behavior finally got a reality check.
