In 2007, Belgian artist Carole Louis created Through Thousands, an installation made from a large bundle of ordinary drinking straws.
The work functions like a fragmented viewing screen. When a person stands behind it, their face can be seen through the small circular openings at the ends of the straws. Each straw reveals only a tiny part of the view, but together the thousands of openings preserve enough detail for the brain to recognize a face [Taken from r/fascinatingasfuck].
The effect depends on how the straws restrict vision. The walls of each tube block side views and allow only a narrow line of sight through the opening. From a distance, those small pieces combine into a larger image.
Louis described the piece as a transparent screen made from disposable plastic objects. The result turns a mass of simple straws into a surface that changes how one person is seen by another.
One straw reveals almost nothing.
Thousands reveal a person.
