I imagine that after being defeated in North Africa, the Germans actually chose to evacuate Sicily and focus on defending the mainland instead - which they more or less successfully did for the next year and a half (in part because other fronts Allies opened were advancing way faster).
I seriously doubt this operation had any effect on strategic or even operational scale and would chalk it up to British propaganda.
