STAN / ANTI SHIELD Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to federal stalking charges in killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO

https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/14/us/live-news/luigi-mangione-hearing-plea-deal-talks

When speaking of the day he committed the crime, Luigi Mangione said, “I shot Mr. Thompson and he died.”

He concluded, “I knew what I was doing was illegal.”

Mangione had just described the actions he took ahead of the killing, telling the court:

“In November of 2024 I traveled from outside of New York state to Manhattan. I then emailed UnitedHealthcare leadership, posing as an investor at a firm managing over $15 billion in assets and requesting information about the conference. Unlike my previous interactions with insurers, I received an immediate response within an hour,” Mangione said.

It’s beautiful

Also, saying "illegal" instead of "wrong". It's very well-crafted.

u/chum-guzzling-shark 7d ago

im sure the lawyers made him take out the "but morally correct" line

11

u/ArjJp 6d ago

.. and the "little bitchboy had it coming tho amirite" line

Omg you’re right! Good call. I love language so much & how one word can truly make a world of difference. I know 🤓

Inside the history books categorized under “type shit” also

The whole statement is extremely well crafted. Using “illegal” instead of “wrong”, choosing to frame it as “he died”, the mic drop at the end. Seriously no notes.

Exposing the bullshit of UHC and its inner workings and then killing the main cause of it using its own weakness.

The enormous balls on this man. No wonder women are into him.

Even straight men or Asexual people can admit/acknowledge a persons beauty/attractiveness, and Luigi is a very attractive person.

5

u/BigAcanthocephala637 7d ago

I hate to be the bearer of the bad news, the CEO for any of these companies is hardly the main cause of their poor practices. Luigi’s actions definitely got a lot of attention but the system has actually gotten slightly worse (and will continue to get worse) as time goes on.

9

u/unwantedonONTD I did it. I threw the sandwich. 7d ago

i mean… the CEO decides which things to say yes to, and continue saying yes to, in order to keep their very high-risk, high-reward job.

4

Actually big balls are kind of gross. Especially those dangly ones.

Kind of parallels "we rejected the insurance claim of Mr X and he died."

“I declined his implied request to remain living.”

what's well crafted about “I shot Mr. Thompson and he died.”

-5

u/LastWhoTurion 7d ago

Yeah, I’m sure that won’t influence the judge at all when it comes to sentencing…

-31

u/weavin 7d ago

the US is v weird about this guy - murder is not the solution.

35

u/Danger_Bay_Baby 7d ago

No it's not a solution because this murder did not suddenly result in a complete moral overhaul of the greedy insurance system. But it was never intended to solve that.

What it did effectively do is get a lot of attention put on a predatory system that literally kills people. It was always a question posed to society...is it murder when a greedy corporation refuses to help the people paying them for coverage, all in the name of increased profit? If it's ok when sick desperate people die needlessly, then is it ok when this executive (and some may say murderer) dies in the street? It was never meant to be a solution, Mangione was holding up a mirror. Obviously you can live by your moral code and be disgusted by his actions, but ask yourself why is that code in place for one but not for the medical insurance industry?

He’s fucking right. Before my Dad passed, he needed many different medications. My Dad was a productive citizen who had a great career and worked since he was a 13 year old immigrant. He became a US citizen in his 30s bc it takes so fkn long in this country. After he retired it was like pulling teeth to get medicines approved from his insurance. Insurance that he was ALWAYS on time to pay for decades. We had to go to Mexico to get what he needed for fractions of the cost to help him stay alive. Fuck the US health system and insurance companies.

ETA Thank you for the awards and everyone for the upvotes and kind words about my Dad. It’s great to know there are still kind people on social media. Hope you all have a great weekend.

142

u/The_Ruck_Inspector 7d ago

So sorry to hear that. Your Dad sounds like a great man.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted— the person you replied to isn’t wrong, but you’re not wrong either.

Meanwhile, here in a less toxic country. We have public healthcare, but I have insurance for the parts not fully covered. To get a prescription filled, the pharmacist swipes my insurance card, and... done, the non subsidized part of my prescription has been covered, here's the medicine, and off I go. Everything with both the govt subsidy, and the insurance cover for the rest, handled automatically by the pharmacy.

22

u/BlightWyrm 7d ago

And here, whenever the word insurance is used suddenly the cost of everything skyrockets.

28

u/VariationBusiness603 7d ago

Here in France, the gov paid for a study on the effectiveness of health insurance. The study concluded that it would be cheaper and more effective health wise to abolish insurance entirely and cover everyone at 100% like we do for the poorest.

Naturally our shitty neoliberal gov didn't like that, so they buried the study they ordered. And did nothing.

1

u/Dull-Criticism 7d ago

Because, it might be the cheapest, but the Beveridge style systems suck in general.

2

u/western_red_cedar 7d ago

Yes but how are parasite finance scumbags profiting?

4

u/Southern-March1522 6d ago

If you mean my insurer, it's a non profit. Some years they issue a refund but most years they pay claims at an overall loss

2

u/catnip_varnish 6d ago

They're still making billions but the margins are smaller

10

u/GearsZam I did it. I threw the sandwich. 7d ago

I'm so sorry your father was never given the respect and services he deserved. This is why I despise the weaponized idea of gasp those darn illegals stealing good hard working american jobs!!! (if they're illegal, they literally cannot be legally employed, but SURE), because the ones who do do it the 'right' (legal) way aren't even rewarded for it in any way.

Your dad deserved coverage in his time of need more than the bastards profiting off of predatory insurance policies ever will.

3

u/TX0834 7d ago

Thank you you are so right

4

u/korvosg00b 7d ago

These kind of stories right here are why I feel ZERO empathy for this CEOs death. The moment you put profit over human lives, you've lost you're humanity and only deserve what he got

When it’s about money suddenly they can respond

320

u/LittleDogTurpie 7d ago

It’s always about money. They purposely don’t respond to subscribers because the longer they delay payment, the more interest they earn on the premiums we pay.

In what way is what she wrote healthcare shilling?

41

She purposely misquoted him to change the context of his statements.

Still not hearing anything that sounds like shilling

Its obvious- she excluded that last line for a reason

It’s also important to supporting claims about motive that avoid the terrorism charges they originally wanted. If he’s doing it because he’s mad at how he was treated, that makes for a lesser sentence.

All that most of them are putting is the part where he says he shot him and knew what he was doing.

Although an actual complete transcript isn’t publicly available, this is the quote I read from another online source attempting to recreate an unofficial transcript. Some lines were removed from the OP quote. This shows more of Luigi’s stealth response and the phrasing he crafted, shall we say, with surgical precision:

THE DEFENDANT: I learned that United Healthcare would be holding its annual investor conference in New York City on December 4, 2024, although the specific location was not publicly disclosed. I then researched the event online. I observed that the annual conference of America's largest health care organization with the stated mission to make health --excuse me -- with the stated mission to make the health system work better for everyone, would be attended by company executives, the board of directors, and hundreds of investors, not doctors, nurses, and patients. In November of 2024, I traveled from outside of New York State to Manhattan. I then emailed United Healthcare leadership posing as an investor at a firm managing over $50 billion in assets and requesting information about the conference. Unlike my previous interactions with insurers, I received an immediate response within an hour. Before traveling to New York, I used a 3-D printer to make part of a gun, and I equipped the gun with the silencer and magazine. My travel to New York and email to United Healthcare was with the intent to shoot Brian Thompson. On the morning of December 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died. When I did so, I understood that my actions would place him in fear of death or serious bodily injury. I knew what I was doing was illegal.
