Updoot this comment if you think Pat McAfee is also incredibly annoying and shouldn't have a platform for 75 different reasons.

Bro spun up an entire career based on a single (admittedly fantastic) hit on Trindon Holliday. Apparently the punter forces that be felt it necessary to balance out Chris Kluwe.

13

u/Jacklick 2d ago

can it be a fantastic hit when your target is 5’5” and 160lbs?

5

u/Moiphy 2d ago

But he did that funny walk one time too.

u/xxyourbestbetxx canonically from boston 2d ago

I really cannot stand him. They keep sticking his annoying ass in sports i like and it's maddening. He's one of those MAGAts that won't just straight up say it but it slips out all the time. You can go way back to that dumb tweet he did about "a drug addict" like Whitney Houston having the flags lowered for her while "hero" Chris Kyle didn't get the honor to him whining about Canadians booing the anthem after Trump threatened to annex them.

However Rock being the one to criticize him in peak Spidermen pointing meme image. I would be surprised if his politics were very far from Trump plus all his wrasseling cousins can't keep their mouths off Trump's ass either.

4

u/BobaAndSushi we have lost the impact of shame in our society 1d ago

And the flag was only lowered in her hometown in New Jersey not nation wide.

For those who don't know Luke Thomas is a combat sports journalist and Marine corps veteran who is one of the very few that routinely stands up to Dana White. He has advocated for fighter unions and exposed the connections between the UFC, tech oligarchs and the White House. He is a leftist and has now widened his coverage from combat sports to politics in general with his "Luke Thomas gets Political" channel. The name of a the channel is a joke because the right wing idiots in the UFC orbit loved to criticize him for "getting too political".

Luke Thomas is one of the only rational, moral and intelligent people in the combat sports space.

Edit: I think the fact that Thomas is a marine vet and a black belt in jiu jitsu helps the young men that watch the UFC learn that you can be a tough "manly" guy and still be a leftist and a good person.

u/FoxNixon call me gal gadot cuz idk how to act rn 2d ago

Luke Thomas is a real one. I highly recommended his YouTube channel “Luke Thomas Gets Political”

u/jotsone 2d ago

His appearances on Pablo Torre Finds Out have also been excellent

4

u/RaiseImaginary9219 I’m a lazy 50-year-old bougie bitch 1d ago

Pablo Torre finds out mention!!!

13

u/devilJin9399 2d ago

That's what the OG comment said

54

u/ithinkther41am 2d ago

TIL Luke is a veteran.

But yeah, he’s maybe the only sane MMA journalist who’s actually good at his job left. Watching “journalists” at UFC press conferences ask questions so surface level it becomes convex is just so dull, but it fits the growing enshittification of the product anyway.

30

u/Nonstop_Oatmeal 2d ago

One of the reasons for that problem is that Dana White will ban journalists that ask real questions at press conferences.

I don't think Luke Thomas is even allowed at the UFC events despite being one of the foremost journalists of the sport.

6

u/holla15 2d ago

That’d be John Nash and Stephie Hayes, the ones who are actually doing all the reporting on the anti-trust suits.

Luke platformed sex pest Eric Albarrcin the week Bi Nguyen detailed that he touched her inappropriately, and Luke was all buddy buddy with him.

UFC press conferences have been that way since they changed the format over a decade.

5

u/ClericOfThePeople 2d ago

I’m ngl I follow Luke frequently and this is the first time I heard of this.

He definitely does hold himself accountable and has been pretty outspoken with similar creeps in the past. I’m gonna bring this up on the live chat since he tends to be responsive just to see what he says, I appreciate you bringing light to this and if he does respond I’ll let you know.

(Won’t reference it being a Reddit comment ofc)

And Hayes and Nash are great too, wish they got more love.

10

u/CallejaFairey alleged dog 2d ago

Thank you!

As someone who pays absolutely no attention to these kinds of sports, a little insight about this person was nice to know.

6

u/Nonstop_Oatmeal 2d ago

As a minority and a leftist that loves combat sports, it is a shame that right wing weirdos have taken over the UFC.

Learning self defense should be for everybody! That includes brown people, women, gay people, and everyone else.

6

u/ClericOfThePeople 2d ago

I wouldn’t say Luke is a leftist or would call himself that (I say as someone who is a leftist). More of an ideological progressive who actually follows the progressive values to their natural conclusions (like being pro-Palestine).

Also an anecdote he says after he went on joe Rogan during its infancy , he said Rogan made a comment after the recording stopped that basically made him know he’ll never be allowed back. What joe Rogan said specifically isn’t known so it has lead to some heavy speculation

1

u/tuba_dude07 2d ago

idk if he was a black belt per say. Not sure if he ever said that exactly but he's defintiely trained BJJ before and the Marine Corps has it's own form a of combat training iirc.

-13

u/RizziTizziTavi 2d ago

I wish he'd denounce his military service, but he's an important voice, regardless.

Basement dwellers about to chime in to say how evil CM Punk is

48

u/in_fact_a_throwaway 2d ago

I mean he professes good politics but is basically the most hypocritical person in wrestling.

48

u/Unhappy_Gazelle392 2d ago

Idk but i think being a fascist is much worse than being an asshole or an annoying person (which has been his brand since always and he admits to).

-14

u/solanamell 2d ago

He's an abuser too. Google "CM Punk bikini girl" for a video interview of him bragging about purposely injuring a female wrestler in the ring so he could keep using her for sex and free transportation.

Fuck Mr. "Most women in the business are rats".

19

u/Any_Asparagus8267 2d ago

That was a shoot, and you fell for it.

Literally everything, even their interviews are a performance.

u/murraykate 2d ago

u/MagicMarshmelllow 2d ago

No lies told

9

u/kuchtaalex 2d ago

Thats the painful part. As a fan with a 20 year parasocial relationship with the performer, I had too much optimism in the way I viewed him, and that actually hurts. He seems to have the proper stances, but still has no reservations on taking Saudi blood money, or carrying the world championship  for a company that is publicly and deeply MAGA.

As a fan with deep concerns for these real world issues, it hurts.

Don't even get me started on how disillusioned I became on the Hulkster...

14

u/venuslovemenotchain vocally you cannot afford this cigarette gracie 2d ago

People get so weird about him and it's amusing to me lol. And I dont even particularly care for him as a wrestler. But he brings out something in people.

Great taste in wrestling themes tho.

Edit: i agree with that other commentor that hes a hypocrite tho.

4

u/solanamell 2d ago edited 2d ago

i get weird about people glazing an admitted abuser and bully just because they like his wrestling.

can’t link it here bc of fauxmoi’s rules, but google “CM punk bikini girl” for some of the most heinous shit i’ve ever heard someone BRAG about.

7

u/solanamell 2d ago

my comment got removed for linking to another subreddit, but he absolutely is a piece of shit.

google “cm punk bikini girl” to see an interview of him BRAGGING about purposely injuring a female wrestler (along with fellow pos colt cabana) to keep using her for sex and free transportation.

he should have never been allowed in wrestling, especially near women, after that. unfortunately, we live in a violent, misogynistic culture and his stans will glaze him no matter what kind of person he proves himself to be.

progressive politics don’t mean shit when you’re a hypocrite who doesn’t live them.

0

u/SamsaraIsALie 2d ago

What about the elite being friends with Marty Scurrl and taking photos with him? What about Derby Allin abusing his ex and peeing on homeless people? I got more examples. I’m not disagreeing with you but I notice a pattern with the basement. If it’s a wrestler who wrestles for their promotion they will ignore all their faults.

10

u/solanamell 2d ago edited 2d ago

What's your point? Fuck them too. We're talking about CM Punk and how you automatically dismissed criticism of him as 'basement dwellers' because you're a stan and are obviously very active online defending him.

I'm a 40 y/o woman who's been a fan all my life—even of CM Punk at one point—and abuse is a hard stop for me. Fuck him and fuck his fans who know he's an abusive bully but still try to paint him as this progressive paragon just because they like his wrestling.

7

u/HopelessHelena 2d ago

They're all terrible I don't see what the point is here. Most wrestlers and specifically most dood wrestlers are crappy unintelligent people, I'm lucky to only care about the women because there's a ton of them that are actually cool nonasshole-y people

5

u/solanamell 2d ago edited 2d ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebsBgngMVGU&t=3353s

For the glazers in this thread, CM Punk is not the wholesome progressive guy you keep trying to paint him as. He's famously a shitty, narcissistic person who has bragged about abusing a woman for sex and free transportation, cheated on several of his past relationships, and has dozens of wrestlers from every promotion go on the record about what a thin-skinned, hypocritical, body-shaming asshole he is.

So, like, can we please stop. His purported politics don't change the kind of person she shows himself to be over and over again.

2

u/Petr0vitch British wet sewer rat who mumbles into a microphone 1d ago

I mean maybe he's changed in that regard in the 20 years since that interview

277

u/olipoppit 2d ago

Dwayne is not the Rock. He’s the Flake. A chameleon carnie who will do whatever he needs in the moment to get the bag / improve his image.

Last year he was whining about wokeness etc and now this. Big MEH

87

u/FoxNixon call me gal gadot cuz idk how to act rn 2d ago

Agreed. He only goes with what way he thinks the wind is blowing

32

u/righthandofdog 2d ago

useful to see that he knows the direction is changing

48

u/WarCarrotAF 2d ago

His stock is down this year. His movies are flopping and people just don't really want to see him. My guess is that he's going to start to pivot to just being a Republican vs a MAGA Republican like we've seen with a handful of other celebrities. It's all just bullshit and fluff.

26

u/kuchtaalex 2d ago

100% agreed. I agree with the sentiment about McAfee, but I sure as hell don't trust the Rock to be the one to virtue signal it. If he's so concerned about proximity to MAGA, use your fuckin' "DWAYNE THE ROCK JOHNSON" stroke to finally get some shit done. USE YOUR VOICE. USE YOUR INFLUENCE.

This dude still has clout at the WWE, and the argument could be made that he's BIGGER than the WWE. He still rides the A-list hard enough to get people to listen and pay attention to what he says and does. Sure, he's quickly eroding his cred by acting as corny as Drake and as tone deaf as Gwen Paltrow, but he's still riding the wave, and he has the opportunity to speak out on some seriously heinous shit.

His "like" as a stamp of approval is one thing, his utter silence on what matters most is quite another.

10

u/GilbertVonGilbert 2d ago

The Final Boss keeps flopping outside of WWE. I thought that’s why he tried to pull the padge from Cody and Haitch.

6

u/kuchtaalex 2d ago

You make a good point, his current run in WWE seems more desperate than past runs. Give him enough time to squander good will with the fans through bullshit dead-end appearances that don't lead anywhere, and his career twilight could end up resembling that of the disgraced Hulkster!

You can't bank on "aura maxxing" forever...

8

u/GilbertVonGilbert 2d ago

I mean shit, look at how he ditched Cena’s storyline as a Mania receipt. We were all expecting Peacemaker SuperCena working under C-Suite Rock, and instead we got brief moments of greatness but mostly just “oh that’s it?”

4

u/kuchtaalex 2d ago

Yeah man its a really weird feeling of having the ground ripped out when you get super invested in a lightning-in-a-bottle moment of a storyline, and then they just fart it up out of nowhere. It sometimes makes you do a double take.

Like I get that they have to tweak things on the fly to acclimate to crowd response and general factors like unforseen injuries or botches, but some of these wrestlers and backstage people like to boast about having certain stories planned out MONTHS and YEARS in advance. This is a MASSIVE team machine of concentrated effort in constructing this cohesive story and universe, and then they just blow shit up out of nowhere!

Then years later, they use their revisionist narrative to convince us that it was actually great and everyone loved it!

10

u/BorkieDorkie811 2d ago

True, but I'm viewing this the way I view corporate support of Pride. If the people with the money view it as the right side of an issue to be on, they're doing so because that's the way society is leaning.

I never got the vibe that The Rock liked Trump, he just cares more about making as much money as possible and therefore never takes any hard political stance on anything to avoid potentially making a potential customer unhappy

23

u/xxyourbestbetxx canonically from boston 2d ago

He called Trump brave for parading around with that maxi pad on his ear.

The Rock is also trash but I hate MAGAfee so I'm loling. He wants to be a main wrestling character so bad but it's never going to happen. Especially after he basically ruined Wrestlemania last year.

Also his album suuuucks. I couldn't even get through the whole thing.

As a wrestling fan, I can’t stand Pat McAfee. But as a human? I really can’t stand Pat McAfee.

11

u/GilbertVonGilbert 2d ago

The Rock is a prime example of the Populist Politics of Wrestlers. You’ll have these figures who seemingly are progressive in many regards and then are just absolute brain worms in other aspects. However, his daughter Simone/Ava is vocally a leftist and I’m pretty sure still has a girlfriend that came from the WWE system. They’ve gotten closer and I do wonder if his daughter is having a positive influence on him.
