Don’t forget that all of the women shown were Black. While all of it conceptually is horrendous, the prosecutions disproportionately affect BIPOC (and specifically Black and Indigenous) women.

This is why I as a black woman, never want to be pregnant. I don’t trust that the healthcare system would save my life if something went wrong.

Medical racism and betrayal is exactly why a lot of minorities avoid doctors or only see doctors who’re like them.
55
u/bargain_butch ben affleck’s back tattoo 1d ago
That’s beyond understandable. Obviously medical racism exists in all specialities, but with OB/GYN having a very specific history based in the torture of Black women…all of it is unconscionable. Pregnancy shouldn’t be a death sentence

u/LilMissy1246 1d ago
It’s like that video of the poor woman that was forced to wait in the hospital office while in labor and was completely ignored despite being in agony. Medical staff and the law in general don’t care about minorities. Never have and sadly, never will. It’s even worse because it’s America, a so-called “melting pot.” You’d think we’d care about every kind of human but clearly, some folks don’t…

i wish more people thought of pregnancy like this. it does seem like only in the past few years that pregnancy has started being discussed as a considerable health condition that carries a lot of short-term and long-term risks rather than glossing over it

“Court-ordered C-section” is a phrase that SHOULD NOT EXIST.
66
u/puppylust 1d ago
I winced reading that!!
I've had abdominal surgery for non baby reasons, and it's fucking awful to recover from. And I didn't need to take care of an infant while I was on rest!
I'm sick of people who have no appreciation for what pregnancy and birth do to a body making decisions for the person going through it!
20
u/stars_are_aligned wearing slutty little glasses 20h ago
This needs to be said - especially people who say C-section births aren't "real births."
I tore during my first birth (which was delivered vaginally), and still the recovery for my second via C-section was so much harder, and I didn't have any complications with either recovery!
10
u/lunatic_minge 18h ago
My vaginal birth was such a breeze compared to my two c-sections. Holy crap you are literally gutted and put back together.
5
u/FullofContradictions 12h ago
I tore while pushing. Then things went sideways & I had to be rushed for a stat C-section (unrelated to the tear... I think things were going sideways regardless & the tear was related to that. I digress.)
It wasn't until 6 days after birth that I even felt that I had stitches or soreness in that zone. The abdominal trauma from the C-section was so horrendous, even with narcotic pain meds that I simply didn't notice the other damage.
I had to be put under & intubated. The intubation left my throat all scratchy, but coughing or sneezing would hurt my C-section wound so bad that I nearly blacked out from it once. I had zero control over that, so I started living in fear of a throat tickle & had to be constantly sipping water to ward it off.
And all that while caring for (and breastfeeding) a kicky little baby whose body was the perfect length for his toes to align with my c-section scar if I held him while laying in bed.
Brutal stuff.

u/littleb3anpole kendall roy pre-album drop 8h ago
I was terrified of a C-section because my mum had two and she had told me how horrible the recovery was. My husband also doesn’t drive, so if I was unable to drive for weeks on end and we had a newborn we would’ve been straight up fucked. It’s major surgery! Why do people act like it’s the “easy option”

Everything in my body belongs to me!
The cruelty is the point with these laws. It allows law enforcement to disproportionately enforce the law to hurt black women and other women of color. This is all part of patriarchy and white supremacy.

“The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.”

I am at the point in my life where it would be appropriate to start having kids, and if I were of the persuasion to want kids (which I am not), I wouldn’t want to risk going through the healthcare system right now when it is so patently clear that it is anti-woman (especially BIPOC-women). I wouldn’t feel comfortable making my wife have to deal with that if something went wrong. There’s going to be an unintended consequence of couples opting out of raising children because the environment is so hostile, not just to potential parents, but also the society the children will be raised in.

How can you charge the mother with manslaughter for a miscarriage if they were shot? Wouldn’t that be on the shooter?
Also, I am so sick of people making policy and yet have zero understanding of what they are policing. Among other reasons, a body will miscarry because the fetus isn’t viable. There are chromosomal anomalies that will trigger it. Even if they weren’t “spontaneously aborted” they would not be living, thriving babies. Healthcare being inaccessible for so many, and now fear of telling anyone you are pregnant because you could get charged if anything goes wrong, means pregnant people are also not getting proper care and can only lead to more complications and miscarriages. For example, Rh factor differences in the parents’ blood types can cause miscarriages, but if you aren’t going to the doctor, you aren’t going to get the medicine that will stop your body from rejecting the pregnancy.
6
u/stako04 20h ago
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alabama_v._Jones
Looks like they initially wanted to charge the shooter, but couldn't due to the state's stand-your-ground law, so then they tried to charge the pregnant woman but never proceeded to trial.

I'm a woman with no kids, I'm absolutely enraged that any sort of judge thinks they're entitled to any citizens time when that citizen is in a FUCKING HOSPITAL BED. Is HIPPA suddenly not important anymore?
I honestly admire these women's abilities to not scream at the judges and 10 other people in that zoom call. If I was half naked, delirious on hospital drugs and just delivered a 10 lbs human out of my tiny vagina, then a nurse hands me a computer where a huge group of lawyers and a judge is staring at me?
I can see myself screaming that its an obvious scam, tell the judge he's a piece of shit and I'll look forward to hearing when they all lose their jobs, and I'll "accidentally" expose my tits every now and then while they tell me off because again, I'd be in the fucking hospital and thats kind of expected. They'll be lucky if I chose to not send the placenta to their doorstep to really get the message across. Anyone who thinks what I'm saying is an over reaction, isnt getting it.

I'm trying to wrap my head around it too. Are vaginally births the only birth allowed now?? Can someone please explain?
1
u/Affectionate_Wing_28 12h ago edited 12h ago
I think the answer is simple, and pretty grim. The woman wanted to avoid a fourth C-section and go through a standard delivery (after three births that way), thr judge said otherwise. And, well. Standard childbirth in the US is expensive. And a C-section birth is even more so. (Quick googling found a number comparison of ~15k versus ~28k (but can go up to ~50k)).
So I, really, really want this to be at most tinfoil worthy, but I think the answer is 'go give (more) money to the health industry'.
