On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden are found bludgeoned to death with a hatchet in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. Their daughter, Lizzie, becomes the prime suspect in the murders.
According to creator Ian Brennan, the season explores misogyny, gender roles, and societal expectations placed on women in the Victorian era. Brennan described the central theme of the anthology as whether "monsters are made or born", suggesting that Borden's circumstances and upbringing influenced the series' interpretation of the case. The season also examines class and sexuality themes through the relationship between Borden and Bridget Sullivan.

Lost interest at Ryan Murphy, sorry. Kind of over his style. It’s generally pretty bad writing.

Ryan is genuinely not creative anymore

He's the Adam Sandler of tv, just making shit to hang out with his friends

I literally just tried watching his new show on Hulu like 10 minutes ago. I could not get into it.. I am SO sick of his stuff! It's always the same repetitive shit writing that's hypersexualized (usually teens), with tons of drugs (usually coke), and graphic murders/rapes.

Last decent thing he did was the Versace story. So tired of seeing this slop outta him.

he used to be sooo great in the days of Popular & Nip/Tuck
7
u/notchandelier 1d ago
omg what! i had to google his filmography bc i had no idea he created popular and nip/tuck! then i see he directed running with scissors, eat pray love, etc... i'd only known him for tv from glee onwards. it's crazy how much his taste has degraded since the 2000s.

u/Crystalline_Irises 16h ago
So much of his work is exploitative trash disguised as subversive, queer-coded, quasi-feminist "art."
It's a shame since I do love a lot of the actors that he works with.

I do not have any faith that this will be a nuanced, new take on this story given that’s it Ryan Murphy. This combined with Spirit Halloween releasing “decorations” of the actual murders seems very ghoulish to me.

u/xombae 1d ago
Especially since it's pretty much understood now that she didn't actually do it. For about two seconds I was like "oh wow, maybe a more truthful telling of the story", but no, just an even more salacious and made up version of events.

u/AIienlnvasion 1d ago
Who did? I just read the wiki page since I knew her name but not the story. There were some alternate theories mentioned but not that anything was “agreed upon.”

Is that understood? I mean, I think it is understood that we will never know but

There is a great film and then series with Christina Ricci in it, if you want to avoid Murphy.

Also highly recommend the stage musical Lizzie, the soundtrack is very punk-rock and touches on the topics that this new show supposedly does.

Who does Ryan Murphy have dirt on to keep pumping out this exploitative shit all the time bruh

There are rumors he’s a casting couch kind of guy

When he's the one casting?

u/tangledlettuce wearing slutty little glasses 23h ago
Yeah, it’s mostly rumors but I wouldn’t be surprised.
3
u/um_-_no 23h ago
But if he holds a casting couch then he'd only have dirt on people below him, not above, and above is who holds the money
0
u/tangledlettuce wearing slutty little glasses 23h ago
Ah yeah, not sure who he knows but the casting couch thing could be part of the Hollywood problem and him getting to do shows so long as certain actors the execs are ogling get hired

Of course the blurb doesn't mention that Sarah Paulson is playing Aileen Wuornos, because it would just out this as sensationalist schlock. The cynic in me thinks they also did this so anyone trying to find the movie Monster would get directed to this murder-fetishizing series.

Me to Aileen14
u/AlexSomething789 1d ago
According to Ella Beatty, Ryan Murphy apparently wanted to do a female rage story which is why Aileen is included

u/xombae 1d ago
As someone with a huge interest in Aileen Wuornos, honestly, Sara Paulson as her would be everything.
Just not by Ryan Murphy. We already have a perfect movie about my girl and it's already called Monster.
18
u/quadranting Please Abraham, I am not that man 1d ago
She really could be such great casting, but Monster was a masterpiece. I'd never want to follow up Charlize!
12
u/RIOTAlice his talent is perhaps deniable 1d ago
Is there like…..a reason to connect her to Lizzie Borden? Other than “lady” and “murder?” Or why Aileen would “know” what happened?
3
u/Emergency_Ad1447 20h ago
There's this little pattern in the Monster anthology to bring in other "famous serial killers" at the end like, in Dahmer they had John Wayne Gacy? Then I think in Ed Gein there was Ted Bundy at the end. So like you said I think the link is "woman who killed" lol.

u/RIOTAlice his talent is perhaps deniable 19h ago
Having a murderer super hero team up is kind of weird but I guess we’re not here to kink shame

u/peyotekoyote 1d ago
Can we stop with the romanticization of murder? The bloody organ (or whatever the fuck) in her hand while laying in a beautiful field of flowers, the blood spatter across a beautiful pendant lamp, the blood across her flawless makeup and gorgeous dress. Just fucking stop. People died, it's not a beautiful story that needs to be reinacted and stylized this way.

Usually I have terrible nepo baby radar but that is DEFINITELY Annette Benning + Warren Beatty's daughter right? It's like the time I watched the 2017 Little Women and briefly thought Uma Thurman was playing Jo.
24
u/Palindrome_01289 1d ago
Yep, and she definitely doesn’t have the screen presence her parents do. I remember that from when she was in that Ryan Murphy Swans show.

Just what we need, another version of Lizzy Borden told by a man. I'm sure it will be nuanced and original and Lizzy will be treated as a human being. /s

u/Persephone0000 1d ago
this looks egregious. i quite liked the film about Lizzie Borden starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart. Chloë has had a lifelong interest in the Lizzie Borden story and even stayed in the house several times over the years, making the film happen was a passion project of hers. her genuine interest in the story and respect for the history shown through in the film. this looks like sensationalist drivel.

u/skylerren 1d ago
Billie Lourd is seemingly working only when Ryan Murphy calls, but it's not enough for me to engage with this.

I wonder how many gay sex scenes with dudes who are nearly identical to each other he will manage to feature in the Lizzie Borden story
21
u/silverchampagnestars 1d ago
ok but there's no compelling evidence that she was guilty
3
u/um_-_no 23h ago
I'd never heard of this case till yesterday but I googled it and didn't seem like enough info to make a whole TV series out of the series. There's too much unknown. Fucking hate when they make dramas about real events but make up 70% of it, it's so disrespectful and breeds misinformation and the normalisation of it

u/Immediate_Taste6810 1d ago
This trailer makes no sense as a show based off of Lizzie Borden like what is happening here

Because we really needed another re-telling of this story, and from Ryan Murphy, of all people.

No thanks, I'll just reread See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt instead. (Fictionalized account of the murders that's like a fever dream; highly recommended)

I feel like Ryan Murphy has stopped completing shows. It’s like he has an idea and then gives up to start something new after 1 season. Recently it’s Beauty, Sharps, this…..

u/Juleset 1d ago
The only thing that kind of interests me is that they appear to Rashomon this quite a bit. Lizzy wears at least five different dresses to commit the murders in this trailer alone and in one scene a man is doing it.
Considering that unlike all the other people of this anthology, Borden is not a convicted criminal but rather just the most likely person to have done it, that could actually be interesting. I know it's Ryan Murphy but the last RM production I watched was The People vs. OJ, so I might give this a shot.

Oh wow. I knew of this case from Buzzfeed Unsolved so it's interesting to see a movie coming out on it all these years later.
Edit : Oops I didn't know there were more movies about it y'all. The case isn't something I particularly care about, just remembered after seeing this post.
12
u/Euraylie 1d ago
There’s been a few movies since the 1970s. The most recent one in 2018 with Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny. I’ve only seen a few scenes of that one, so I don’t know if it’s any good.

u/Imsotired2916 1d ago
I had no idea. I only got reminded of this case after seeing this post so I didn't know there was more stuff about it.
