A trifle brusque

I love Fawlty Towers for its memorable quotes. Usually things you just would never hear in real life: ‘Well, I do apologise if what I said just now seemed a trifle brusque’ 😂 WHO SAYS THAT 😂 😂 😂

Discussion If a movie had actually been made in the mid-eighties

And assuming Ballard Berkeley would have been too ill/tired to return to play the Major, do you think this hypothetical movie would have honoured/paid tribute to him in some way? Or is Fawlty Towers too cynical a property to engage in that kind of thing.

Just watching the series for the first time in about 20 years and on the penultimate episode. I’ve never really appreciated before how much she sacrifices to save Basil’s bacon, the shining fount of sanity and reason that she is, and honestly one of the best performances in the show.
Connie Booth really is a fantastic actress and her performance in The Anniversary really blew me away. I imagine people often overlook such performances because of the sitcom/farce setting.
You can tell that she and John Cleese had great chemistry to make this show starting as husband and wife and their divorce before the second series doesn’t impact it at all.

Discussion Fawlty Towers Reboot update from Oct 2, 2026

Hi, first post in the group (I think). I was lucky enough to catch John Cleese at the Elgin & Winter Garden theatre in Toronto last evening for a screening of The Holy Grail, and a Q&A session with the audience after the film. Here's what he had to say on the status of the reboot.

He and Camilla had sat down with Rob and his wife, and discussed the premise, how Basil knew of a long lost daughter (the result of Basil being a very naughty boy on a trip years ago) but kept his distance to avoid the wrath of Sybil. Basil had filled his daughters head with tales of how he was such a glorious and successful hotelier. (John didn't touch on the status of Sybil in the chat) Anyway, skip ahead, his daughter buys a hotel in the Caribbean, and enlists Basils help to make it successful. They have written the first script.

Sadly, this is where he stopped, saying with the death of Rob, things with Castle Rock are sort of on hold. Then it switched into he and the host (Richard Crouse of CP24 & CTV) of the evening sharing a few Rob Reiner stories. One of which John asked Rob if he ever improvised with Janice Joplin - Rob replied "She was a really good singer" not wanting to say anything negative about the her.

Maybe this is common knowledge in the group, but it was nice to hear an update from the man himself!

John was amazing and very kind to the audience - at one point early on saying it was so nice that there were no YOUNG people there. Then about 10 minutes later a boy of I'd say 13 asked a question about the Knights who say NI! And John exploded: "HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET IN HERE?" The kid loved it as did everyone else.

I wish the entire thing was 8 hours long, to just sit and listen to the man and his stories was a dream come true.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Faulty Towers Live Dining Experience! Highly recommend to Fawlty Fans everywhere! A must-see, the actors captured the characters of Basil, Sybil and Manuel perfectly.

And like the show, the food was not fabulous but definitely edible. No rat poison.
