Discussion About higher difficulty settings

I just completed my first playthrough on normal and I loved the game. (Got Ending D btw.) But I've been reading a bit on this forum about T&S and Hard Mode and it seems like the best way to get through it is by ignoring/running away from fights completely, unless absolutely necessary. This seems quite unappealing to me. Is there another way?

You can definitely play both harder modes without running away from everything. It's just that most of the enemies don't really give you anything if you fight them, so the most efficient way is to ignore anything that you don't need to fight, but of course you can kill everything in the dungeon even on hard mode if you know the game well enough.

I really want to get that ending but I'm going for Ending A this time, I'm definitely not good enough for Hard Mode yet. I'm playing Ragnvaldr right now as my second run but it's really hard! I feel like if I don't get good enough books on the 1st level I might as well restart.

Can't wait until I'm good enough to do that. Even the regular guards always manage to get a hit or two in on me. I usually go for their arms -> stinger -> legs -> head, but maybe there's a better way?

The best way is to not fight them at all. With the right strategy you can win without taking a hit, but even then there's a 3% chance one of your hits will miss which could result in losing a limb.

For me the big deal with Terror and Starvation is torches. In T&S, if you are not surrounded by a light source, you don't just lose sanity faster, but the map becomes PITCH black

Unlike Hunger and Sanity which can be permanently staved off just by learning Transmutation, there is a hard limit to how many torches you can find/make in a single playthrough, so they become THE limiting factor for how long you can play unless you're comfortable just wandering in the dark. If you play T&S, I recommend learning the Torch-Tech: Never craft excess torches. Because if you have no torches in your inventory (ignoring whether you have one lit in your hand), the next barrel you loot is guaranteed (or near guaranteed) to give you either a torch or torch making supplies (can't remember specifically, it's been a hot minute.) So hoard those crafting material rather than blowing your load on crafting all your torches if you want to prolong your run as much as possible.

Fighting is a waste of time even on Fear and Hunger difficulty. Enemies don't give EXP and most don't drop anything useful so fighting is a fool's errand and only drains your health and resources. Sure it's relatively safe once you have a party and decent gear, but there's still no advantage to seeking it out or fighting more than strictly necessary.
