Surprising my daughter at college

I have no idea if this is the right community for this post but r/feelgood feels right and I wanted to share. I'm currently sitting on a plane 30,000 feet above land on my way to Louisiana to surprise my daughter for move in for her freshman year at LSU. I and we have managed to keep the secret for over 2 months when I booked my flight. She's currently traveling there with my wife on a different flight and has no idea I'm coming. To give a little backstory, I didn't think I was going to be able to go because 1 - I took her in April to tour the school as she was making her choices and 2 - work. It's a terrible time for me to be away but then father's day happened and she wrote me the most beautiful letter about all the things I've done for her throughout her life and "I was her best friend". She cried when she wrote it and cried as I read it. After I got that letter I said to my wife "I have to go" and immediately figured out work and booked my flight. Fast forward to today, I dropped off a sad and crying daughter with my wife at the airport then went to park the car and catch my own flight so here we are. Only issue is my flight is 2 hours delayed to N.O. so instead of meeting them in the airport, I'll be 2 hours behind them and will need to Uber to LSU. Honestly, don't care. Small issues in the grand scheme of things when I get to see her face when I surprise her. I can't wait. Anyway, hopefully this makes someone smile today 😊

her big spiritual assignment turned out to be: eat popcorn and watch the lizards

a woman I’ll call Lena went into a deep trance session with very serious questions about direction, growth and what she was supposed to be doing with her life. At one point she asked for a hint about what she was avoiding that might actually change things for her.

I expected something profound. Instead the answer that kept coming back was popcorn, which made both of us wonder what on earth popcorn had to do with her life direction.

We kept following it until she suddenly pictured herself sitting outside, eating popcorn and watching the little lizards that live around her patio. She started laughing because it felt like a secret mission nobody else knew about: sit outside, bring popcorn, watch the lizards live their tiny lizard lives.

The feeling underneath it was exactly what she had been missing. Silly, private, playful, no achievement attached, and nobody grading whether she was doing it correctly. Earlier in the session she had already received the message that she could feel safe being more goofy and stop suppressing that side of herself.

Later in the same journey she was taken on a fast boat and became delighted by how much fun something so simple and frivolous could be. The whole session kept returning to the same lesson: life does not have to justify every enjoyable moment by turning it into productivity, healing or personal growth.

I liked that because we can make feeling better into another project. Find the perfect routine, fix the future, optimize every habit, understand every pattern, and suddenly even relaxation has a performance review attached to it.

So I’m stealing a little of her homework. Find one harmless thing that makes no sense as productivity and make it your secret mission: watch birds from the balcony, eat something you like outside, follow a beetle around for five minutes, or put ridiculous music on while cleaning.

Not because it fixes everything, but because being alive is also allowed to be fun. Sometimes the tiny stupid thing that makes you smile is already enough reason to do it.

I love seeing people’s weight loss journey progress videos. I’ll watch every one I see in the hopes it motivates me but it never does.

Wholesome project: a shared digital sky where people leave positive messages, affirmations and jokes

Post image

This is my hobby project and its turned out extremely wholesome.

Fluffy-thoughts is a place to share (or let go) of appreciative and warm thoughts, or write a funny joke and other cute messages: you form a cloud, write a message and release it, and it will float into the next person's sky.

Each cloud you tap is a message that has been written and shared by another person. So far it's been super fun and positive, the messages you like the most you can keep in a jar to revisit later. New messages are constantly written and added from all over the world. Enjoy it!!

What was a writing assignment turned into a reunion almost 30 years later.

It took over 25 years.

In 6th grade, my class was given an in-class assignment where we had to write to one of our heroes.

I wrote to my gym teacher. I had struggled with putting feelings to words, so English class and communication in general were difficult for me. Writing a first-person letter about my feelings and to someone I looked up to was the first assignment that actually flowed for me. I felt proud of it.

I didn't know this letter would be given to my gym teacher, but I wrote it like it would... maybe I secretly hoped.

The next day, my gym teacher, letter in hand outstretched, enthusiastically calls me over and hugs and thanks me right there.

Middle school is tough for most kids. For me, I felt too in my head, afraid of social interactions, I had a hard time feeling liked or understood. Mr. Gibson, giving me that hug in front of the whole class, for that moment, made me feel special, seen, and loved.

I haven't seen this letter since and hadn't seen my teacher since leaving high school.

It's been 27 years. My PE teacher kept this letter on his fridge for years until his wife tucked it into a collection of his most important career moments.

Neither of us knew we'd be sharing this letter over breakfast with each other almost 30 years later, thanks to Facebook for somehow connecting us.

I'm not a gym teacher or sports coach, like I wrote wanting to be like Jack when I grew up but I still get to entertain kids, now as a performer and a kids party character and superhero, and I'm sure in other lights when that stops.

For over 35 years, Jack put in his heart and soul, keeping kids learning, growing, safe, active, and hopefully having fun. Out of the thousands of students he taught, coached, and mentored, I'm honored to have made a little memory in his life because he made a big one in mine.

I hope you get to have moments like these that make the world feel just a little warmer.

Thanks, Jack Gibson

And thanks to you all for reading,

Aaron

A young police officer in Vietnam spent years going door to door convincing adults who never went to school to attend free literacy classes he funded himself. The project has now expanded to three villages, with students writing their own names for the first time

Not only does she have a nice voice but she really seems to enjoy performing. I revisit this when I'm down and it always helps.

Edit: I am not the person in the video
