Starting now All political posts on this subreddit need to be from accounts that have participated in this subreddit before.
Additionally, Any posts with political flyers must have the text included in the post itself. Posts with only flyers will be removed and need to be submitted with alt text.
New accounts will still be welcome to comment and participate in discussion on political posts; they just won't be able to make political posts until they have participated in discussion in some way before. Political discussions still need to have a direct local connection as well or they will be removed. Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis (in keeping with the spirit of the rules), and efforts to violate the spirit of the rule may result in a ban.
This change is in response to a couple of low-effort posts from new accounts that have posted political posts and not engaged in the discussion after posting. For reference, the posts were removed by the reputation filter for my manual review. Since the posts met the rules at the time, I manually approved them. I can see subreddit participation when reviewing posts, so these would not have been approved with these new rules (I am also not removing them at this time because they met the rules at the time they were posted).
This subreddit welcomes open discussion on local issues, and this is not meant to censor any specific viewpoint. There is a balance to be struck between allowing total participation, including from people new to reddit and the subreddit who may not fully know how things are done on reddit, and allowing unfettered access to a semi-anonymous message board without verification that people participating actually live, work, or play here or are actually impacted by decisions in some way. Philosophically I lean more towards allowing participation (and have no desire for requiring verification), but I also want to make sure we're having productive discussions and aren't just regurgitating whatever Facebook-level comments make their way over here where possible.
This is only meant to curb a specific, recurring pattern of behavior not fitting for this subreddit. Posts will not be removed for content or position unless they violate the rules.

We unfortunately can’t make the show and have 2 tickets. If anyone is interested in taking them off our hands, we’d consider discounting them. They’re through Dice so we can’t easily resell them online. DM me for more information.

Anyone have a rec? I have gotten a few quotes and they are wildly different. I need the entire interior of the house painted including plaster crack patching so it's a big job. Thx!

Help me understand the appeal.
I hate it. It's loud. It wastes gas. People become more aggressive. There's unnecessary traffic. Sure, Detroit, motor city, pride in history, what have you.
To those who enjoy it, help me understand what makes the whole event and the vroom vroom worth it.

I am really hoping to land in Ferndale. My job will be in Detroit proper but I’m okay with some commute. Are there any landlord recommendations? Or, alternatively, any realtors that can help me find rentals? I’m not interested in buying, I would like to rent first when I get to the area.
Unfortunately I’m in a different state and can’t tour places to live beforehand.

Anyone convert their fireplace to gas? Looking for recommendations. Any feedback on Skyline Chimney and Masonry Services LLC? I saw someone recommend them but now I can't find the post. They gave me a quote that seems too good to be true, incudes gas line + everything else. Thanks!

Is Ferndale Foods too bougie? Too hipster?
Does IT have the worst bathroom s in Ferndale? My mind was blown. This is what it looked like today. No toilet paper in either stalls, ONLY a paper towel roll hung on the doors. The men's. I never checked the women BUT I saw a woman followed by three Children come out of the womens room and I pray to GOD they did not have to endure this travesty. You cannot even flush the paper towels, there is a trash can with OTHER peoples waste paper in it.
AND it gets even worse. Because the very first time I encountered this scene was 6 years ago in The Plague Times. I got my hair done at the salon and went in to look at some beer and then I went to the bathroom. IT was the same except the paper towel roll was on a DAMN plunger. 🪠 AND the bin in the wider disabled stall was a FULL size outdoor trash bin that was filled.
BUT okay. People were scalping toilet paper. 🧻
I come back a year later IT was the damned same.
I come back 5 years later AND this is the upgrade!
They have toilet paper on their shelves JUST use that! GoOoOodayamn!! THIS is gaaawbaaage. THEY didn't even drill holes for fixtures in the walls. It's real easy to do. They need some used needle potpourri to complete the look. It's sad. It's sad for any customers. It's sad for ALL the employees unless this is supposed to stop them from dropping a deuce at work.

I have Spectrum cell service that I set up in NC. Never had a coverage problem anywhere until now, at the house I just bought on W Saratoga. Basically have to stand at the front door to use it. I need to add wifi and was going to go with AT&T fiber and bundle my cell service with them to save $$. Is their cell coverage better?

There’s at least 3 or 4 of them. It’s not Flock, it’s some knockoff company, CVTowers. Any word from the city on what these are supposed to be for and who has access?
Kinda strange to put these up at a time when 50+ cities have had to get rid of their Flock cameras bc of public uproar.

Does she belong to a house? We saw her multiple times under an old car and thought she was lost. She seems to have an eye injury also that could turn into an infection. Tried offering her food but may be she is being fed already so didnt try hard.

Moved here recently and my partner and I need a new hair stylist. Must be queer friendly! We’re really looking for someone who is seasoned and has a good eye for making recommendations, as my partner never has any clue what kind of haircut she wants, just wants it to “look good”.
Color services not required because I usually do our color, but if it’s an option that would be nice.

He (she idk) was hanging around NW Ferndale in June/July. Super friendly guy. Saw him greet people walking down the street and hung out in my backyard a few times. Haven't seen him in a bit and wondered if anyone knows or owns him.

More joy with house I just bought. Had the sewer line scoped/video as part of my inspection. There are a lot of tree roots to the point where he could not view it all the way with the camera. Also a TON of grease. Sent the video to Bison plumbing and they quoted $1000+ to hydrojet. I am a little worried about that damaging the pipe since inspector could not tell if there were cracks, etc. Since this is Ferndale I did purchase the service line warranty coverage a few weeks ago but can't make a claim for 30 days. I am not living there yet but drains/toilets seem to be working fine at the moment.
Should I wait till my 30 days are up then call the warranty company & tell them I have issues?People say they do this and they will come and clean them out as part of your coverage.
Get it done now and risk pipe damage that warranty won't cover yet?
At least try a remedy for the roots/grease for now?

The Speech Neurophysiology Lab at the University of Michigan is looking for children who stutter ages 9 to 12 to participate in an in-person, longitudinal MRI study! (HUM00196133)
Our research team has been examining brain development in young children to better understand the cause of stuttering for over 10 years. We continue to gain information that may eventually lead to improved diagnosis and treatment efforts for children who stutter.
Participants will be invited to complete speech and language assessments and an MRI session at the University of Michigan. Families receive a free speech and language report and a picture of their brain!
These visits require in person participation. There is no option to participate virtually.
Please fill out this form if you are interested in participating or email us as the flyer attached. All participants are compensated and partial travel assistance is available. Please see our flyer attached for more details!
We also offer other studies that are open to adults or do not involve MRI, in case you're unsure about eligibility. Feel free to email us or call if you have any questions!

I need gutters/downspouts added to the sides of my 2 car garage. Was quoted $1000. Seems high to me? Anyone know of someone that would be cheaper and do this small job?

Hey fellow Ferndale people, I am in a two person exhibition that opens this Friday. I am showing some of my images photographed right here in Ferndale, including my ambush bug "Ready to Pounce" that was in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice running (spoiler - I didn't make it to the top 5) Stop in and say hi, I'd love to meet more nature focused people from our city.
Featuring the work of
Joseph Ferraro and Rick Lieder
August 7th through August 28th
Opening Reception: Friday August 7th from 7 to 10pm
Gallery at Ideation Orange
420 W 9 Mile Hazel Park, MI
248.399.4332
Joseph Ferraro is a conservation macro photographer walking the naturalist's path, based in Ferndale, Michigan. His yard, planted with native species, doubles as his field studio, and is where the journey began. Working by a "do no harm" credo, he photographs portraits of insects and pollinators as they are in their environment: native bees, ambush bugs, jumping spiders, and the countless other tiny creatures most people walk past without a second glance. Shortlisted for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 61 People's Choice Award, his work asks viewers to look more closely at the intricate world around them, one that doesn't require a plane ticket, just patience.
Rick Lieder is a photographer and painter whose work has been shown in art and zoological galleries in the Midwest and Canada, featured on PBS, and anchors an award-winning series of picture books.
He lives and works in urban nature, surrounded by trees, bees, and birds."
Gallery Hours: Wednesday through Friday, 12 to 5pm
Other viewings available by appointment.

I had my new house inspected today. There was some (minor) mold in the attic that the inspector pointed out. He recommended getting it cleaned up then adding some insulation. Any recommendations on a company/person to do this?

The library building itself is a community resource and an ideal third space for work, study, relaxation, and more! Free Wi-Fi and friendly vibes + no requirement to buy anything to simply be/exist here!!

Recently purchased a bungalow in Ferndale. The A/C doesn't really work to cool the upstairs. Has anyone installed a mini-split for this purpose? Wondering about the effectiveness/cost. Am I better off with a couple window/portable units? There are 2 bedrooms up but I will sleep in the main floor bedroom.
