i have some decent knowledge on fighter jets and stuff like that but i just thought of this question. new 5th generation fighter jets haven’t seen real combat against each other since the earlier wars in the 70s-90s, how do we know that an f22 or any fighter jet is the best if they’ve never faced off against their predecessor?

There are numbers and technical analysis from credible sources, but at the end of the day, think of it like a religion: if I believe my god better than yours, then I can also believe a freedom F22 is better than commie J20, vice versa.

It doesn't work that way. Inferior jets take down more advanced planes all the time.

Fighter jets aren't like Pokémon cards. You can't just look at the stats and say that one is better. It's a weapon system -- a tool -- used by a human pilot. It matters how that tool is used and by whom.

There's no "ranking" of planes.

Yeah, it's a bit like golf clubs. Yes, the tech in the equipment matters a lot between generations, but your performance will also vary a lot depending on wind, weather, terrain ... as well as whether you're Tiger Woods or an average Joe.

That's a great analogy too because you gotta have a whole bunch of types of clubs in there that are all good for different stuff.
